Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. He was a self-made man, he basically self-educated himself throughout his life. The Republican party, also referred to as the GOP (Grand Old Party) is one out of the two political parties, the other one is the Democratic Party. During Lincoln’s presidency he was faced with many obstacles, one of them being the preservation of the union. Another task that was at hand was the abolishment of slavery. Lincoln accomplished this in two ways: through the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) and the Thirteenth Amendment. Abraham Lincoln and congress worked hard to preserve the union, uphold the constitution, stabilize the economy and motivate the nation to go west; but ultimately through …show more content…
He chose very carefully in an effort to unite the party. His cabinet included many of his main rivals that he had defeated to become the Republican Party and nominee for president. As commander in chief, Lincoln knew he had a heavy responsibility and a lot of power. He would have to use patience and statesmanship when using his power to ensure his vision was achieved. Lincoln also had to ensure that foreign countries did not come to the aid of the south during the Civil War and the effort to free the slaves. Britain and France were Lincoln’s biggest concern when it came to solving diplomatic problems. British manufacturers and shippers made huge profits off the war so the lack of cotton coming into Britain was a small inconvenience in comparison. The war effort lasted longer then anyone could’ve imagined. Lincoln needed fresh troops for the Union army, so he signed the Enrollment Act into law. This act was very controversial and required every male citizen and immigrants who have filed for citizenship between the ages of 20 and 45 to enroll. A similar mandatory enlistment of people into military service had allowed other nations in history to build very large and powerful …show more content…
One of the important previsions of this act was the granting of lands directly to corporations where before this act the land grants were made to the states Through the Morrill land grant acts, land was granted to many states in order to create state colleges. Lincoln also supported the homestead acts where settlers were given 160 acres because he thought it was wise to have individual farmers own and operate their own farms. This was completely different from the south where slave owners bought large pieces of land and used slave labor. This act is interesting because any adult can apply including women, blacks and immigrants. All of these acts concerned president Lincoln greatly because he knew many of the previsions included in the acts might cause states to side against him and with the confederacy. President Lincoln was very intelligent an had a good understanding of the impacts, impacts that the law had on slaves, southern land owners, and others in
With thorough consideration, he selected his cabinet, managed a “team of rivals”, sufficiently applying their abilities to contribute the nation; as the Commander in Chief, he managed various generals and soldiers, visiting the battlefield in person; also, he played a significant role in the foreign affairs, kept Britain out of war, avoiding unnecessary troubles; affluent experience of a lawyer enabled him to deal with various acts such as the Martial Law and his questions about the writ of habeas corpus, and to convince his naysayers from different walks of lives. Simultaneously. remarkable financial policies, among which the most impactful ones were the Avenue Acts and the prevail of national paper currency, were proposed to Lincoln and passed by Lincoln; to expand the advantages, Lincoln and the government passed and enacted the Pacific Rail Acts, Morrill Land Grant Act and Homestead Act, which also created new opportunities for the people while the devastating war was going on. Towards the main reason that triggered the war-slavery, Lincoln signed the Confiscation Acts and Emancipation Proclamation into law, and then his aim-abolition of slavery was achieved with the pass and
He proposed the idea of the South rejoining the Union, but that sadly failed when the drew close, right before it ended, he had no clue what to do. He then came up with a plan that gave some blacks, even if they were free or enlisted in the military, should deserve the right to vote. As a part of his reconstruction he created the Proclamation of Amnesty. The Proclamation of Amnesty helped set the ideas of Lincoln’s plan. The Proclamation of Amnesty allowed for a full pardon with the exception of high Confederate officials and military leaders.
Lincoln could envision battles and how to win them. He could tell them where to proceed like they were pieces on a chessboard (Wheeler). This was unheard of at the time when people could communicate with troops across long distances (Wheeler). During his
The movie “Lincoln” shows the last 3 months of Lincoln’s presidency and how he was attempting to end the civil war. Overall the movie was historically accurate but was in some ways exaggerated some scenes for example the passing of the 13th amendment and other scenes. Lincoln's plan was to pass the 13th amendment to give equal rights to whites and blacks and abolish slavery in order to end the civil war. One of the reasons is was important to accomplish the 13th amendment was because the Emancipation Proclamation did not quite free all the slaves as they wanted to or could.
He cared more about the outcome of the war that was fought for the people and the progress being made in order to achieve his main objective of the war – preserve the Union. Once again, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation helped him in his efforts to create stronger central government. Firstly, it encouraged the rising tide of patriotism in American people. Lincoln was “a master of the written and spoken word. ”9
Abraham Lincoln, looking back, seems like an integral person to America and its history. People today may believe that, but it was actually surprisingly difficult for Lincoln to win his reelection. There were many factors contributing to this uncertainty, one of them being his support of emancipation for slaves. According to USHistory.org, the Democratic Party was split right down the middle about their hopes for the war. Half of the democrats were extremely dead-set on ending the war with a peace treaty, and the other half wanted to continue the fight ("The Election of 1864").
First is the presidential reconstruction. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln as the President of the United States of America has been constructing a draft called the Ten Percent Plan. This plan focus on reconciliation, not on a punishment for the Confederates. By drafting this plan, Lincoln has a purpose. His purpose is to make the Confederates surrender to the Union easier.
While the Know Nothings, Abolitionists, and Danites still existed, their candidates (if any) really had no match compared to the popularity of some of the Democratic and Republican representatives. As a Republican, Lincoln was often forced to ignore some other similar views he had with Democrats like Stephen Douglas. For the sake of politics, Lincoln could not find common ground and work with others to better the country. He had to be aggressive and focus on opposing viewpoints to get his campaign off the
Even though Abraham Lincoln assured that he would protect slavery where it existed, politics and the economy in the United States needed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Within the Civil War period, in order to keep the four border states remaining in the Union, Lincoln must issue the Emancipation Proclamation after he was sure the Union had the victory. There should be only one economic system in a country. Lincoln chose the Northern economic system as the standard for America. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation because he believed the Black and the White had same natural rights under the Declaration of Independence (Clark, 1858).

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America, civil rights activist and talked about the emancipation about slaves. Abraham would talk about the unfair treatment to slaves and when a law was passed. But many southerners thought that he was wrong for abolishing slavery.
Abraham Lincoln is one of the most, if not the most, celebrated American president of all time. “Honest Abe”, as he was called, took a stand in many different ways. He made the decision to fight to prevent the United States from falling apart, was a commander in chief in the Civil War, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation.2 Perhaps the greatest way that Lincoln took a stand was when he helped ratify the 13th amendment, the statement that abolished slavery in the U.S.A forever. The Origins Of Slavery in the U.S. European settlers began to turn to African slaves in the early 17th century as a more plentiful and cheaper source of labor.
It ended the slavery began the freedom of slaves. Abraham’s second impact was when he was the first to sign the Homestead Act for civil rights. This allowed poor people to obtain land. The third impact was his speech, the Gettysburg Address. President Lincoln is known for ending slavery, signing the Homestead Act, and giving a speech known as the Gettysburg Address.
President Lincoln did what he presumed was best for the country, but there were many who did not agree with his decisions for slavery and unionizing the states after
Abraham Lincoln would lead the Republican Party even though he did not win the south over in the election. He promised that he would save the Union no matter what the cost. This disconnect in policy would later lay the basis for the Civil War, which started in 1861. He never envisioned a proclamation or ending slavery but he was ultimately committed to saving the Union from the succeeding south. Lincoln gave into the antislavery Republicans toward the end of the war and finally decided to make slavery the true basis of the war.
Presidents are elected to preform and achieve greatness in America; they serve as the commander and chief of armed forces, and they find ways in coming up with agreements regarding trade and aid along with many other things. Being the president is obviously not an easy task. Have you ever thought about who you thought the best presient of the United States of America was? According to a debate in Taking Sides written by Larry Madaras and James SoRelle they presented an argument between Phillip Shaw Paludan and Melvin E. Bradford debating if Abraham Lincoln was America’s Greatest President. Many people agreed and disagreed whether or not President Lincoln was the greatest; however the sides of two professors were part in the Taking Sides issue of yes or no.
