I grew up in a middle-class, small town neighborhood right next to the coast in south Texas. At the age of fourteen, I moved to the Texas Hill Country. Before this time, I had been homeschooled since the third grade. I learned early how to think on my own and to think on a deeper level. I was able to take astronomy, robotics and things that helped develop my science skills which was an opportunity for to explore many avenues that I would have been unable to do in a public school setting. I believe that the individual attention that I received and the opportunity of being able to study areas that I had interest it will help me in my future. I have two older sisters, eight and ten years older than myself. They helped teach me to learn to read by the age of four and instilled music into my life. I also had a bonus sister who is not blood-related, but needed help and moved into our home when she was thirteen. I always …show more content…
If I chose to play games or extracurricular activities I knew I had to juggle my time of play versus school. If I completed school for the week in the three days then I had a four day weekend, but if I didn 't take care of that schoolwork then that meant I had no weekend and privileges were taken away. By me knowing what my work was in advance for the week, it was my responsibility to accomplish that goal. I believe that homeschool made me mentally and physically sharp because I had more time to run and play in the yard and go to field trips like the space center, the Houston zoo, museums, robotic competitions and horse rescue rehabilitation ranches. As a family we were able to take vacations and trips when most students were in school which allowed more attention on tours at points of interest. I believe that homeschool has made me strong in faith because my curriculum covered moral and biblical
Many people are raised up by the idea that the society they live in always needs more adjustment, and other people around them are not always friendly. I am also one of those people. Since I was little, I was taught by my father not to trust anyone around, and not to pay too much effort into any kind of relationship. Even though I might not necessarily agree with him, I still followed his advice for years. However, I always ended up feeling lonely and depressed.
This is not meant to be an exhaustive or thorough study, but meant to get the opinions of a few families that are currently homeschooling their children. This will give you an idea of the variety of families that home educate. This questionnaire appears in the Appendix, page 19. Task 3.
When observing the increasing presence and influence of minorities within Texas one can see how much of an impact these communities have had on the state of Texas by shaping it into a state filled with diversity, cultural roots, and innovation to grow the community. Texas has undergone a notable growth demographically in recent decades as minority communities including Hispanic/Latino, African American, and Asian populations have made Texas one of the most diverse states and the second largest growing state with a population of 30 million as of 2022 (Bureau, 2023). With the continuing growth of minority communities, their presence and impact have brought significant change to Texas’ social, economic, and political affairs. Texas can be seen
Nestled in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, Austin is the southernmost state capital in the continental United States. Austin is currently the nation's fastest-growing city and has an estimated population of more than 932,000 people. The city was named for Stephen F. Austin, who is known as the "Father of Texas. " However, it did not always bear Austin's name, nor was it always the capital of Texas. The History of Austin, Texas
However, what homeschooling does provide are flexibility and freedom. The flexibility to choose materials the child is interested in learning more about and the freedom to choose where and when to spend family time together. Families are not held to an 8-3 school schedule with truants and late slips. They have the ability to plan vacations according to what works for their family, not what the school schedule allows for them. Many states have heavy regulations on homeschooling as far as the requirements and responsibilities go.
I was also homeschooled because I was bullied as a child. I do not want them to be negatively influenced by society and it 's
When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?”
Home schooling is a trending concept that is popular mostly in US and around the world. Home schooling preferred often by the parents that have environmental concerns, religious beliefs, lack of confidence to the education quality of the public and private schools and inadequacy of curriculum. They believe that they can give better education to their children at home. According to Jamie Martin (Homeschooling 101: What Is Homeschooling, 2012), home schooling began to grow in the 1970s, when popular writers and researchers such as John Holt and Dorothy and Raymond Moore wrote about the educational reforms and they alleged that home schooling is a valid educational alternative.
Also, families tend to get their kids in homeschooling education to have more plenty time. There are several reasons to give students a homeschooling education, students will focus more on the lessons, having more chances to practice on exams, also they will have plenty of time to spend with parents, and feel the responsible of importance of education. The more parents have free time for their kids, the more they will know how they are going in their knowledge levels. Some parents are turning to educate their children at home; because of the more ways of teaching. Parents choose how their children want to educate, which will have more free time.
In addition, learning at home may offer fewer distractions allowing students to focus more easily and get the most out of their time (Werrell). Differences such as parental involvement and learning environments are two
Have you ever felt uncomfortable, nervous, and confused ? These are all the things I felt moving to a new school. I had no idea if I would gain friends or if anyone would like me. Maybe if I had a tour around the new school before my first day I would have not been so disorientated. Going from a one story school to a two story school was hard, having to look down every five seconds to make sure I was on the right hall, or if I was suppose to be upstairs or downstairs.
Homeschooling can be challenging and difficult but there are great reasons that it is good, you can learn faster, you can get good grades and make it to college, and get distracted less. Homeschooling is a wonderful outcome and it is really successful, so many of the kids that have done homeschooling are really good people
Currently, it is estimated that over one million families school their children at home. Most of these families include a breadwinner and a stay-at-home parent who does most of the teaching, although there are single parent families and dual career families who home school.” according to Teach Target. Personally, I believe that homeschooling isn’t the best option for kids; they rather go to school to help them with their social life, their level of understanding and to help them get inspired by the surroundings. There are a lot of reasons why parents should stop homeschooling their children and send them to public or private schools.
One of my experiences with failure took place when I was in fourth grade. There were many problems accumulated and I was a child who needed people to see if I did my homework or study for the test, because I couldn’t concentrate and was distracted by anything in the room. My brother also had problems that year, he needed more attention because he didn’t get along with his math teacher and my Mom was always after him with the homework; otherwise he would have failed Math at the end of the year. In fourth grade, the teacher that was assigned to us was one of the strict teachers that were in that school
When most people think of homeschoolers, they think of sheltered, unsocialized hermits, whose only friends are books and their parents, pets, and siblings, of which they have many. While this may be the case for some, most home educated children are just like everyone else. According to Business Insider journalist Chris Weller, after spending time with and researching homeschool families, writes, “Contrary to the belief that homeschooling produces anti-social outcasts, the truth is that some of the most high-achieving, well-adjusted students are poring over math at their kitchen table” (Weller). Being a homeschool student myself, I can attest to the truth of these statements. I have homeschooled for around six years now, and I have met hundreds, and personally know several home educated students who are nothing like this stereotypical homeschooler.
