African American women have suffered through various traumatic experiences in history and within their own personal lives. Through the characters of Amabelle from The Farming Bones and Sethe from Beloved, readers are able to see the psychological effects of slavery, the Parsley Massacre, and the death of their loved ones. The theme of survival is prominent within these compelling novels and is mainly displayed through the women previously stated. Amabelle and Sethe undergo many dangerous situations in their lives. They battle many external and internal wars. Because of Amabelle and Sethe’s survival instincts, they are able to be victorious physically, but not mentally. Amabelle and Sethe truly ‘survive’ their fight in life when they are able to overcome their psychological traumas.

African American women were successful in escaping slavery, however, as a result of silencing their experiences, African American women have suffered through various levels of depression and insanity. The Parsley Massacre is an aftermath of slavery in Haiti. Even though Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island of Hispaniola, Haitians were unwanted in the Dominican Republic by Dominicans because the pigment of their skin was just a few shades darker. The Dominican government did everything in their power to remove every individual of Haitian descent from the Dominican Republic. They tortured Haitians out of their country. They removed all the dignity Haitians had, but Haitians still managed to display their strength instead of
One thing Perdue could have done to have taken this book to the next level, is include more insight from specific Cherokee women. With their insights, it would have given more of a direct insight as to actual stories making the book more interesting. If she had included more examples of Cherokee women today and how they demonstrated strength this book could have been better. Also, Perdue’s analysis reveals the burden of her politics. It is evident that at times she uses communitarian and the female centric nature of Cherokee society to criticize modern American gender relations and society.

Due to the impact of the male opinion on women in society, the female characters in both novels suffer from emotional, physical and psychological stereotypes. Steven Galloway, a critically acclaimed male author, is responsible for the literary work titled “The Cellist Of Sarajevo”.
Nella Larsen’s Passing is a novella about the past experiences of African American women ‘passing’ as whites for equal opportunities. Larsen presents the day to day issues African American women face during their ‘passing’ journey through her characters of Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry. During the reading process, we progressively realize ‘passing’ in Harlem, New York during the 1920’s becomes difficult for both of these women physically and mentally as different kinds of challenges approach ahead. Although Larsen decides the novella to be told in a third person narrative, different thoughts and messages of Irene and Clare communicate broken ideas for the reader, causing the interpretation of the novella to vary from different perspectives.
In the book Taking Haiti: Military Occupation and the Culture of U.S. Imperialism, author Mary A. Renda discussed the United States occupation of Haiti between the years of 1915 and 1934. When the United States decided to move into Haiti for military occupation, it wanted to establish not just control of the country, but it also wanted to secure its interests there. American politicians and many marines viewed Haiti through a racist lens and viewed their people and government as inferior. They believed the nation required a helping hand from the United States. American politicians justified the tactics of forced labor, economic manipulation by American politicians, and murder by the marines, as part of the paternalistic policy it had implanted there.
The documentary Black in Latin America Haiti and the Dominican Republic: The Roots of Division talks about the same issues as the article The Dominican Republic 's mass Haitian deportation reflects its racist history. In the Dominican Republic, most residents are in denial of being black while in Haiti their black ancestry is embraced. The film says, at around 14:57, that once Dominicans were freed from Haitian rule that they rejected Haitian culture. They no longer wanted anything to do with Haitians, as they believed they were different. This anti-Haitian belief was even taught in schools until the 1960’s.
In Salvage the Bones, Jesmyn Ward parallels the mythological story of Medea in order to highlight her representation of women. The use of Medea, who is embodied in various aspects within the three main female characters, allows Ward’s work to obtain a sense of universality to her narrative. Also with this incorporation, Ward is able to change the dominant perspective of “blackness” that has plagued southern literature written by African-American authors. Salvage the Bones occurs in Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, following Esch,who has just found out she is pregnant, and her poor family just days before the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina. Medea, an anti-hero, who succumbs to her own decisions and the demons of love represents a dynamic femininity, rather than the stereotypical aspect of which is what being a female is.
“Slavery In The Dominican Republic and How It Affected the Natives Racial Identity” By definition the Dominican Republic is a Caribbean Hispaniola Island that is shared with Haiti to the West. The Dominican Republic today is a major tourist destination and has become a major source of sugar, coffee, and other exports. But the Dominican Republic had to suffer a lot in order to prevail the way they did, undergoing being enslaved by the Spaniards while on the other side of the island the Haitians were enslaved by the french hence the obvious difference in languages and cultures. The main difference is that the Dominican Republic lost their racial identity and until the present day are unaware of their true racial identity. Slavery affects every country and person differently but in the Dominican Republic, slavery took away the nation’s identity.
Even though Haiti’s a poor country, his people have a big heart. Parents don’t want their child to work, they make them focus on school only, and their education. On the other hand, Americans just consider a child to be lazy if at their teenage age they still don’t work. They raise their children to be independent different from Haitian that make their children to depend on them. Another fact is that Americans are not really friendly; they avoid contact with people, and they have a hypocrite smile on their face, however, Haitians are really friendly, sincere, and courteous.
