The American Experience Throughout history, events have shape the perception of America and the American Experience. Whether shared by the world or only involving the United States, events like the Industrial Revolution, World War I, World War II, and the civil war have had a lasting impact on the country, its communities and its citizens. This impact is seen by the unique depiction of the American experience, which is unlike any other experience in the world. The United States was founded upon the idea “that all men are created equal” (Declaration of Independence). An institution build upon equality was non-existent prior to the United States. The fondation of equality, as well as liberty is what sculpted the nation into the country it …show more content…
This domestic dispute was a dark time in American history. This fight over slavery spilt the county into two and had everlasting effects over the people. Some Americans were fighting for the right of others, while the others were fighting for economic stability. Communities were destroyed and numerous lives were lost, but in the end, the freedom of slaves was achieved and yet again America upheld the ideals of which it was founded. Equality for people has been a key issue for the United States, and American citizens will continue to fight until it is achieved. This determination and freedom to fight for what you believe in is a crucial part of the American Experience. Everyone in the US has the ability to fight for their beliefs and has the opportunity to …show more content…
This expansion was not through the typical means of conquering a nation and taking over, but rather through trade and international relations. Some of these relations, the United states gained land, but compared to many other colonies under foreign rule, the subjects of US colonies were eventually seen as loyal to the US. A specific example of colonial discontent would be the British colonies. Many British colonies objected English rule, and eventually sought independence. This was different in the American colonies like Guam and Puerto Rico, who are still this day American territories. During this time, the US also fought on the behalf of countries who were not strong enough to defend themselves. The US was seen as a protector, therefore causing great pride among American citizens. This pride allowed for great unity within the nation also contributing to the American
The Americans always kept in mind what they were fighting for, their freedom. That thought pushed them through the hard times during the
Though, it was not what it should have been, arguing whether slavery should be accepted or if all African Americans should be freed and have similar rights to the whites. Instead, it was how and when the counted as population. The South wanted their slaves to count as numbers for population for added representation in the House, but did not want them to be counted when determining their amount to pay in taxes (higher population resulted in higher taxes). It was the complete opposite of what the North wanted. They wanted the South to have less representation and pay more in taxes.
Imperialism, the act of expanding the United States’ political and economical influence over the world, was one of the U.S.’s priorities during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The United States had also began becoming overall different than they were before. Before the civil war had happened the U.S. had kept to themselves, not really participating in the outside affairs that were going on around them. After the civil war, the U.S.’s economy grew stronger in ways such as influencing policies such as the Open Door policy with China, the U.S.’s military grew stronger enough to the point where they won the Spanish-American war in 1898, and lastly politically influenced the Philippines, Cuba and many more territories. Hawaii, was an opportunity for the United States and many other countries to expand their trade with Asia.
Strong leadership, I believe, is the key to having a strong America. Throughout history, there has been leaders, good and bad, but I believe if the citizens have leaders that take into account their (the citizens) feelings and the wellbeing of the country as a whole, we can have a strong America. America cannot have just any type of leaders, there are some key aspects that the leaders should have in order to lead people (the citizens) efficiently. A leader should listen to others and their ideas; a leader should not boss people around but try to help people reach their potential and add value to them by encouraging them; a leader should also admit when they are wrong and learn from their mistakes so they can reevaluate everything and try to
Growing up on the border of Mexico and the United States is something many people have no idea what it is like. You are exposed to two different cultures that sometimes have opposite traditions and values from each other. Living in Juarez and El Paso, has greatly influenced the way I am today and how I think about both countries, making me acquire the best traits of both cultures. My story begins growing up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, where I started elementary school.
America has been built on the foundations of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but how have those words help to define what our country is as a whole? America could not have become what it is without the foundations created by our founding fathers. With the unalienable rights established by our founding fathers, we, as citizens, are blessed to live a prosperous life in which our future is determined by our actions. America is a country where a man can have a dream and accomplish it, become one with his fellow citizens, and discover new innovations daily. Being an American gives citizens the right the live the American dream, cultivate the world’s melting pot, and strive to innovate new ideas.
Being an American is not determined by race, religion, gender, or age. Being an American is decided by how hard a person works to succeed in a goal, by helping others when they are in need of help, by always pushing forward even when odds are against them, and by giving to others that don’t have the luxuries some Americans do. Being an American also requires being brave, sacrificing for the greater good and mercy to those who ask for forgiveness. These are just a few of the many characteristics of being an American. What values evident in the assigned texts provide the basis of the character of an American.
When I first started writing this essay I had no idea about how to promote Americanism, with me being your normal fourteen year old girl. Then I did what many of my peers would do, I googled it for ideas, but nothing caught my attention. At that moment, I decided I wouldn’t write the essay, but then today at my Veterans Day program I realized that there are plenty of things I can do to promote Americanism. I hadn’t realized how truly lucky I am to live here in America, and I realized that’s what true Americanism is. Promoting Americanism isn’t about doing big, flashy things for popularity, or to look good.
“We do not make history; we are made by history.” This historical quote by Martin Luther King truly defines the origins of the world––especially America. America has become the center of the world––politically, economically and socially. Despite its origin only being some less than four hundred years ago, it has surpassed ancient civilizations and empires to become the world’s greatest superpower. The secret of this advancement does not lie in its geography or resources, but in its foundations and upbringing.
In America, citizens take pride in being American. But, what does it mean to be American? If you were to look at from an educational standpoint, it would mean high dropout rates, black/ white test score gaps, and differences in resources between schools. The term education is defined by sociology as a social institution through which a society’s children are taught basic academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms.
Culture of a nation is a term that embodies the artistic, culinary, literary, humor, musical, political and social elements that are representative of that particular nation. From the history we know Canada's culture was specially influenced by the British and French culture and lately by the American. As America is a neighbor country to Canada, they share a large common border. Because of sharing a large border, migration and a common language with the United States, Canada faces a cultural difficulty. Global trade opens a gate for both of them to interact culturally through magazine, radio, television program etc.
The debate of America’s Exceptionalism has been occurring for a long period of time. Many people may argue that the United States is better and more successful country because of our freedoms, but others may argue that the U.S. is an egotistical country that abuses its influence on other countries. Undoubtedly, America offers a plethora of opportunities and a lot of hope for people searching for a new life, but freedoms such as these often come with a price. The U.S. has high taxes and even flaws in the political system that is supposed to keep us running. There are good and bad prospects when it comes to America’s exceptionalism, but when it comes down to it, America is exceptional.
Have you ever wondered what it is like to live in a different country? You would be living in a completely different culture; your entire life would be extremely different. You will most likely have different values and beliefs depending on where you live. There are so many different cultures all around the world and I knew next to nothing about them, so I thought that it would be extremely interesting if I studied the culture of one of the countries and compare their culture to the culture here in America to see how similar they are and how they they differ.
When you hear the words American Culture what to do tend to think about? When I hear the words American Culture I tend to think about society, and how it has influenced my life. Society itself is influenced by the people and the culture within it. When actors or actress dress in something different people will also dress that way. When you have a culture that heavily populates an area, that culture will be heavenly influenced in that area.
