The Wild West was a lot different than life in a small town like Seymour, in Jackson County, Indiana, after the close of the Civil War. From this area came a pioneer group of outlaws who would come to be known as the, Reno Brothers. Causing havoc in the Midwest and accomplishing the world's first peacetime train robbery, which occurred on October 6, 1866, nearly seven years before one of the most well known outlaw gangs the James-Younger Gang held up its first train at Adair, Iowa. A mob of nearly 300 men was seen forming in Seymour that night and this was the start of the “Scarlet Mask Society”, (Learning Network, 2012) who were a group who swore that their town would no longer be terrorized. The group quickly made a point and lynched the two men who had been convicted. This was a key turning point for the brothers who vigilantly decided to take their next spree out of state. They headed to Missouri in November and quickly went into action were several gang members raided the treasurer's office in Gallatin, Mo, and made off with almost $25,000 in cash and bonds. Their bad luck was not ending though as John Reno was positively identified as one of the robbers, and the Pinkertons were hot on his trail. In December when John went to the Seymour railroad station, the Pinkerton man were there and quickly arrested him and after being processed in January he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. With
