Historians often vigorously debate about Herodotus and most things pertaining to him and his work. There is not a lot of information about Herodotus and most of our information about him comes from his actual writing itself. What we do know is that in a certain respect he is one of the earliest of all historians in the proper sense of whose work we possess. He lived during the fifth century (c.484 – 425 BC) and was born in Halicarnassus in Asia Minor, which is now modern day Bodrum in Turkey (de Ste. Croix. 1997:137). Halicarnassus was a Greek settlement in Caria that soon became under Persian domination. He was the son of Lyxes and Dryo and they were one of the leading families there. Coming from such a well-off family, Herodotus had the opportunity to receive the best education that was available to …show more content…
Historie meaning inquiry, is where we get the modern meaning of the word “history”. Herodotus practiced historie, he investigated the world that he lived in—looking into why things had happened, such as why the Greeks fought the Persians and why the Greeks won. In order to acquire all of this information Herodotus did extensive amounts of travelling. He was able to do so because he was considered to be a cultural hybrid of sorts, especially with how well he was familiar with different customs. Being as Herodotus was not a mainstream Greek, he did not solely focus on them, therefore, instead of writing the history of one single city, he chose to present the history of the entire known world. He visited Egypt, Thrace, Phoenicia, the coasts of Syria, the edge of the Scythian territory North of the Black Sea, and the Eastern regions as far as Babylon (Finley, 1959:27-28). Whilst in all of these places he wrote down his observations incidentally causing him to become the earliest anthropologist and ethnologist whose work survives (de Ste. Croix.

Would you follow a law if it serves no purpose to you or others? or if you felt that it was wrong to a certain group or ethnicity? Many people know the story Antigone by Sophocles, a kingdom set in ruins as two brothers end up killing each other over a land given to them by their father. As said in lines 165-175 Creon states “Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial: no man is to touch him or the least prayer for him; he shall lie on the plain, unburied.” Being as how both brothers fought fighting for their beliefs they should both get a proper military honored burial as believed by their sister Antigone.
Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.
Marcus Schimmelfennig – Euthyphro Essay – Philosophy 150 The argument Euthyphro and Socrates go about talking about is a murder case Euthyphro is about to be a part of. Euthyphro is prosecuting a man who is being prosecuted for murdering a murderer. It begins as such, the man murdered was caught in a murder and the second murderer tied him up and threw him in a ditch, but forgot about him so the first murderer died of hunger and the cold weather. The second murderer was Euthyphro’s very own father so, with this in mind, he is having trouble determining if he should prosecute his father to be guilty or not guilty for the action he committed was indefinitely an illegal act, but, I this time period of the case, the murderer would have been facing a death sentence in the end anyways if he would have been caught by an authority.
Eventually, a third and last monster appeared. This time the monster was a furious dragon that would attack and burn down the villages of Geatland. Obviously, Beowulf was ready to take on the dragon in a fight, but unfortunately, after defeating it, his wounds were not to fix. Sadly, Beowulf had fought his last fight. Eventually, The Geat’s held a worthy funeral for Beowulf, and they even built an enormous barrow where he could rest in peace.
Herodotus was considered “the father of history” and he was an inspiration for the founding fathers of America. His most famous work was Histories. The founding fathers read Histories with admiration. They agreed with Herodotus’ conclusion as to the source of the Greek victory over the Persian. Herodotus’ conclusion was: “Free man fight better than slaves”.
Odyssey Argumentative Essay The Odyssey is an epic by Homer. It is a story about Odysseus journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. All the Greek heroes had returned home after the Trojan War except for Odysseus who was an important hero in Ithaca. A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Unfortunately everyone has had to put down an animal at one point in their life, but is it acceptable to put down a fellow human? In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, as readers, we are faced with this question. Everyday thousands of animals are put down because there is no hope of them having a family to care for them, but can we ever truly justify putting down a fellow human being because they require special care? Unlike pets or other animals, humans possess the ability to communicate clearly with others and reason with them. In this book George, Lennie’s “friend”, ends Lennie’s life, only with no verbal warning to Lennie.
He got known to the whole world when he was able to complete King Eurytheus’s twelve of the dangerous and toughest challenges in the Greek mythological history. If you were to think about a man with great abilities like being strong, courageous and intelligent, you could think of people you personally or like me, you could think of someone such as Odysseus. Odysseus fits the definition of an epic hero because he is quick thinking, strong and courageous. Odysseus is one quick thinking individual. He has gotten him and his crew out some some sticky situations with his clever plans. One of these plans were how to get away from Polyphemus, a cyclops who was the son of Poseidon.
Columbus has long since been renowned as a talented explorer that is graced with the recognition of discovering what we call America, however, deeper insights and research have proved him to be less than an entirely respectable man. Historians have since proven that not only did he never step foot on North American soil, gruesome atrocities have been committed in his name, the accounts of such being from his own writings. Contrary to popular belief, Columbus is not the explorer we, as children, have been taught he was. A common impression educators place upon children is that, not only is he a hero but that since he discovered these lands, of course he could not hurt people that were already there.
History have shown many rebels fights for what they believed in. They fought for their freedom, their rights, and their dignity. But there are some people who selflessly fought for others, and one of them is Mark Twain. Samuel Langhorne Clemens or Mark Twain was born November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. He is one of the most iconic figure in literary.
Written in Classical Greek, it has been translated into dozens of languages, including Old English and modern English, and kept the ancient traditions, morality, and stories alive centuries after the author’s passing. As the “Father of History”, Herodotus holds a status of academic immortality, and through his work we have a foundation for how to keep record of history for future generations to know and almost place themselves in those times. What reading Clio has reminded me of is the importance of history to the world, and how this book and its eight brethren were the blueprints for all future historical writings. It shows how well recordkeeping can stand the test of time, and how keeping information and knowledge of the past can continue to teach and shape the
1. Oedipus is a hero, but he represents most men at the same time.
