Police officers go through many different training events that put them in numerous amounts of different scenario. One of the scenario is should the officer use lethal force or not. However not every situation is different but does not require the office to use lethal force from the start. Office may have a knight stick or a Taser gun and officer should know when to use each individual item of equipment. In 2002, a Madera California police officer made a mistake between her gun and her Taser which lead to the death of a Twenty-four-year-old Everardo Torres. This is why office need to train so that mistakes like this will never happen again. Officers should also know when they received enough evidence to arrest someone for the crime the individual have committed. In the summer or 2016 a video flooded the social media and the television, showing Charles Kinsey being shot in the leg while trying to help 23-year-old patient who ran away from his group home. Charles Kinsey was shot in his leg while lying on his back with his hands in the air, reports say when Charles asked the office why he shot him the office said he do not know
later that night he leaped at a swat member with a kitchen knife, and the swat member had to shoot to save his life (MacDonald 16). All cops are trained for fast and appropriate responses in any situation, but especially dangerous ones. If a man attacks an officer, he will end up shot by a taser or a real handgun or rifle. The assailant in this case was a major threat to an officer 's life. The officer was forced to react..
Law enforcement jobs are known to be reasonably dangerous jobs, and officers are often placed in circumstances where they are required to make instantaneous life and death
In today’s modern society, many feel that is okay for a police officer can kill a man armed with a harmful weapon at any cost. On many news channels, there are various amounts of articles and reports about a police officer committing this act. Even though a police officer has the right to take action against an armed man, this could be argued in many circumstances. In the 2013, Sammy Yatim was a young adult with a mental illness and was armed with a weapon on a streetcar in Toronto. Yatim was confronted by Const.
One common opinion is that officers should not use more force than is necessary or reasonable, and even then, that force should be used only as a last resort. “Police use force to affect civilians’ conduct. On a day-to-day basis, they do so most often by employing the least degree of force available to them, their mere presence. Cops wear uniforms and drive distinctly marked cars so that, without saying a word, they may have an effect on citizens’ behavior” (Fyfe, 38). When an officer’s presence fails to fulfill the desired conduct, the next course of action for said officer would be verbalization.
Police officers are trained to make split second informed decisions, often times officers decisions are called into question. One case that caught a lot of attention was the Philando Castile shooting on July 6th, 2016. Mr. Castile, an African-American male, was pulled over by Office Jeronmio Yanez due to the fact that he fit a description of a having a “wide nose”, according to CNN, that was similar to a robbery suspect. Once Mr. Castile was pulled over it was revealed through Ms. Reynolds, Mr. Castile’s girlfriend, Facebook live video, that he possessed a gun in the car which he was licensed to carry.
Police practicing public execution is a clear infringement upon the constitutional rights which is why I have chosen this article. The title of this article “police brutality may be overwhelmingly legal but it 's far from being ethical or just”. I have chosen this article not only with its connection to Dr. Martian Luther King Jr. but it is a growing epidemic in today 's society. While it is legal for an officer to use force to “protect and serve” the right to take ones life is not ethical.
2. I believe that personal and organizational influence because police officers could be tired physically or personally use force toward someone they don 't like. Physically officers could be also tried due to long hours on the job that may impair judgement or cause quick reaction. Secondly, an officer 's emotional state of mind could be impaired so, this can cause a collision of attitudes on and off the job.
His neighbor appears to be intoxicated and becomes violent when the officer reaches for his handcuffs. He takes a swing at the officer and then attempts his escape. Thirty years prior, the officer would have had the option to draw his weapon and fire or risk a dangerous car chase. Thankfully, he has a Taser gun on his belt. He is able to draw, fire, and apprehend the subject with little effort and no loss of life.
There is enough evidence to show that police officers are using an excess of force, and in some occasions lethal force in their daily routine. It is normal for people to get scared when they are in the presence of a police officer. It is not a casualty, it is because the history that is around police officers and the fame that they had created. Recent incidents involving police officers shooting innocent people are raising doubts about how police officers are trained, and the credibility in the Unites States System of Justice. Stop and Frisk Stop and Frisk, the tactic that has been going on for only for short time, yet there seems to be racial tension already. But is this new information actually true or is it just good policing? According to Heather Mac Donald from the Manhattan Institute, says “what looks like racial profiling might just be good policing”. However according to Ranjana Natarajan from the Washington post “it’s clear that two issues need to be addressed: racial profiling and police use of excessive force.” Unfortunately we cannot have both ways.
For decades now, the controversy over deadly force has continued to show up in the news when police officers have acted in a manner that some citizens find just while others deem completely unfair. Many lawsuits stemming from shootings and crimes have found their way to local courts or the Supreme Court to deal with this issue. A portion of the U.S. population finds deadly force unnecessary when non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray or batons just as easily subdue the criminal. In addition, these citizens argue that officers might be liable for cases filed against them if they use excess force on people that seem suspicious but have not actually committed a crime. On the other hand, the opposing argument in favor of deadly force states that
Police officers trained properly in current de-escalating techniques can prevent the need for reaching for physical weapons provided to the officers such as tasers, pepper spray, batons, and guns. Tasers and pepper spray are often considered less dangerous weapons for police officers to use. These weapons have caused death due to age, addiction, and health conditions of civilians. Deescalating the situation to the point where no physical violence occurs is the goal of all officers. Higher education can increase the police officers ability to obtain that goal more often..
The public has a misconception that deadly force is the same thing as excessive force. They can be similar if the police use deadly force to a point where every officer discharges their entire magazine on person when the threat has been eliminated. Officers receive hours of training on how to shoot a gun, but sometime receive little instruction on how to determine when to use the gun. Training starts in the Police Academy, and continues throughout their careers. There are officers who teach and train the departments every month.
In Iceland no police officers are armed, all they have is a small baton. However, it is legal for citizens in Iceland to carry guns with 30 people in 100 have their own guns. With a high number of guns, crimes involving an offensive weapon is very low. The most common crime is drugs. Iceland is also a country that you are unlikely to be murdered in.
[ Imagine this scenario: you are complying with the police that are screaming at you, guns pointed at you, screaming “please don 't shoot” and trying your best to do what the police are asking. Daniel Shaver was an unarmed man fatally shot for no good reason. He was complying with the police officers orders and was begging for his life, screaming “please don’t shoot,” before he was fatally shot 5 times. Unfortunately, this is just one example of police brutality, an instance when police use unnecessary force when either they are unarmed or are complying with orders. Today I want to tell you of the injustice of police brutality, the people it affects, and how just asking the right questions could make sure that police are punished for their crimes.
