When compared to Britain and France, Italy was a poor nation and Mussolini was keen to change Italy's weak economy into a major European powerhouse. Firstly, he wanted to gain control over the country’s workers by diluting the power of the Trade Unions. He therefore started three ‘battles,’– the Battle for Land, the Battle of the Lira and the Battle for Grain.
