What makes a person an American? Many ask this important question. Besides the fact that he or she took the citizenship test or he or she was born here. We are all working together to make this nation the best it can be. We can understand what an American is by thinking of what makes this country great. This country is great for many reason, despite its hardships. One of the many reasons is that we have freedom to chose, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. We are also a melting pot for many different ethnicity. Being an American is about the freedom we here enjoy. We are full of different ethnicity and cultures. We are one big pot of different things. In the book it tells the reader that there is a rose bush growing right next to the prison door. This rose bush represents kindness and forgiveness to the prisoners. In addition to the door represents the harsh justice of the Puritans. It also represents no innocence or guilt like the red "A." In many ways the prison door is like the red "A" because it shows you that prisoners can't get out and are insufficient, but when they do get out of prison they are like the rose bush, innocent and kind. The rose bush shows that if you complete your sentence you will have justice rule. They will be able to live their lackadaisical lives again. They will be carefree, but while they are in jail they are in no state for innocence. The prison door represents, just how locked up they really are. They only get the food and supplies that the prison guards give them. The door represent no freedom. They don't have freedom, all they get to do is sit in the cell eat and maybe read. Another symbolism of the prison door would be chains. Chains keep you from being free, they keep you from going anywhere. They make it so that you have to stay where you are, you can move, but only as much as the leeway between you and the chain. The chain is holding you back from your desires or passions. The prison door is the chain. You may have a little more freedom then you would with a chain, but the door is still holding you back from humanity and sanity.
