What do you think when you hear the word homework? If your blood just started to boil, then you are like me. Kids are given too much homework in school, and teachers are a part of this. A kids whole life is not school, or at least it shouldn 't be. What do you mean by ‘too much’ you ask, well, experts say that after about 2 hours negative effects start to ensue upon the kids. Teachers give too much homework in schools, and the reasons why include the fact that homework has discouraged children from participating in extracurricular activities, leads to a lot more stress for the students, and can have negative implications, academically, instead of the desired positive ones. Homework takes up a lot of time. Sometimes teachers give up to 3 hours worth of homework in one night. Kids want time to have some fun as well, such as electronics, video games, books, and etcetera. Along with those activities many kids want to play sports, and if you have a sports practice longer than 3 hours then what other time in the day do you have. At Stanford University studies were done that proved that too much homework can negatively impact kids, especially their lives outside of school, with their families, and participating in extracurricular …show more content…
Outside activities are so important to kids development, and homework doesn 't allow many kids to do so. As a student myself I experience so much stress just from my schoolwork/ homework. Also, many studies show that too much homework can actually do the opposite effect than intended. On the contrary, not all teachers give too much homework, but the added amount from all my classes ends up being too much. As Lily Tomlin said, “"I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides
Homework is a term used to describe assignments given to students by their teacher to be completed outside regular class period. Some people say that homework is necessary for student success, but it actually has no academic benefits and has negatively effects on children life; therefore, it must be abolished. In order to support my view, I did research on two articles “End Homework Now” (2001) by Etta Karlovac and John Buell and “Moving with the Brain in Mind” (2000) by Eric Jensen both articles display that the negative effects of homework outweigh its positive effects. Furthermore, the articles discuss how smaller class size, by engaging students in great variety of exercises, impact their overall moods and ability to learn. The main
You might think that it 's unfortunate, but homework should not occur, and this is all why. Homework is not a great thing all of the time. It can cause major stress for kids. And a lot falls into this. They feel pressured, they stay up late, they 're in a lousy mood.
What are the many main reasons that teachers assign homework to students? In the book The Homework Myth: Why Are Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn, he takes a deep dive into why many teachers may assign homework and why he believes homework is not effective. His main argument is that while this method of teaching students and educating them more is not effective, it can also weigh on their mental health, as well as increase the educational gap among students. Through his book he also argues that it is a waste of time, and puts unnecessary amounts of stimulation for children as well as their parents. Assigning homework has often become some sort of tradition, and one that many teachers feel they have to upheld.
But this does not mean that they should be given endless stacks of homework. By this, I mean when they are given a lot of homework for the next day, the student will gets upset and do not want to go to school because he doesn 't want punishment for what he couldn 't do. This is my personal opinion. Homework is a never-ending conflict at school, the students want less homework but the teachers have to give them the homework, so they can study at home. Lastly, I would say a student needs time to learn but also time to play and relax and to enjoy life with his family and
The school use to start at 9am and it gets over at 3pm and then there is a tutoring program which running from 5pm to 8pm. The homework isn’t to bad because sometimes the teachers make us do it during class time and working on the homework with friends as a team work use to be fun. In the article “Down With Homework” the author says “Overwhelms struggling kids and removes joy for high achievers” I disagree on this statement because homework is a part of confidence and helps us to improve in our daily basis studies and keeps us on track. The idea that overall about homework it helps children to learn better and give them a better understanding of what they are learning in the daily
There are 24 hours in a day, 8 of those hours belong to school. From the moment when a student wakes up, they begin to prepare for school then go to school, most schools start around 8:00-9:00 am, so most students get up 1-2 hours earlier to get ready. Students need at least 8-9 hours of sleep to be able to function. With students having after school activities that take up around 2 hours, students are exhausted and when they get home all the want to do is relax, but some of them have responsibilities that they have to do, which gives them less time to relax from a long day of school. On top of having homework students end up staying up late getting all their work done, which cause them to be less focus the next day not allowing the
When a student has too much homework, they cannot be able to balance all of these tasks in one day. Without needing the time to relax the body and mind. A survey by the University of Phoenix in 2013 states, “High School students had an average of 17.5 hours of homework every week and 3.5 hours from each teacher per week.” Considering if students go to school all day and have extracurricular activities then it leaves them with very little time to spend with family and friends. (Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework). The students are getting an excessive amount of homework a night.
“A 2006 meta-analysis conducted of more than 60 studies of homework 's efficacy showed that doing homework did not necessarily increase an elementary school student 's test scores or grades.” (“Homework Bans Don’t. . .”) Another study in 2013, a researcher from Indiana University, Adam Maltese, conducted a study on sophomores to see the relationship between homework and their
Homework is like a boat with a hole in its side if there is a leak in the boat then the boat is useless. The water will rush in and fill the boat with cold, dark water. The same goes for homework, it is useless. All the nights kids spend with hours and hours of homework, all the tears and stress are not helping kids in school. Numerous amounts of today's kids have excessive amounts of homework.
An average student would spend hours on schoolwork a day, which can be very stressful. A high school student will use half of their day around school relation. Almost all elementary to high school students will likely to agree that homework should not be assigned. The majority of students complain about homework yet teachers don’t usually understand why. While homework gives benefits to students, unnecessary homework should not be assigned due to the fact that there are enough school hours, it consumes time, and the development of poor health is encouraged.
The clock strikes 12:00 am and students are trying to finish their pile of homework due in the morning. Students are rushing to finish in order to get ready for the next day. Schools are assigning students a lot of homework, but the homework can do more harm than good. Negatively affect kids by sleep deprivation. Source of frustration and daily stress.
Although homework can help increase understanding of new topics this kind of practice is not helping students because it can interfere with sleeping, stresses kids and teenagers out and can cause depression, and even make a kid give up on school altogether. Some people believe that homework helps reinforce the skills taught to their students that day; however, if students are getting
Erik Entrikin from the CNN Homework Debate once said, “We need to figure out what the right “dosage” is. Currently, it is much too high.” Mr. Entrikin uses quotes around the word dosage. When using this word, he means dosage as the amount of something; in this case, he means the amount of homework. In today’s society, homework is given out too much.
According to Harris Cooper, homework can help with the expansion of personal responsibility. This implies that kids will become more and more responsible over the years with homework. Furthermore, homework can also lead to good study habits. This tells us that in the future with homework kids will have developed great studying skills. Also, when doing homework kids are building good time management skills.
Above all, homework allows the students to gain responsibility, time-management, perseverance, and self-esteem. “The act of completing homework has benefits in terms of developing good habits in students.” This shows that, students are gaining many skills from homework. This also shows that, homework isn’t a waste of time and students do benefit from homework. “Homework also teaches students how to problem solve, think independently, and build an understanding and interest for the issues in our society.”
