“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Bilbo needs a lot of bravery to stand up to the dragon but also Thorin. He stands up to Thorin when he was yelling at Bilbo. Before the journey started Bilbo would not have stood up for himself, but because of this journey Bilbo is more confident in himself. Bravery is an important asset to The Hobbit, without bravery Bilbo would never have went on his journey, the dwarves would have been eaten by the spiders, and Thorin would have died in the Elven Kings dungeon. Not only would this terrible fate have befallen the dwarves, but Smaug would have never been vanquished.
When Bilbo meets Gollum in the cave he shows bravery, as well as compassion. Instead of threatening Gollum, Bilbo plays a game of wits with him to try and convince Gollum to show Bilbo the way out. When Bilbo is reciting the riddles with Gollum he could not think of the answer so Bilbo tries to say “give me some time” but instead he says “Time! Time!” Which luckily for Bilbo was the right answer. Then after these events when Bilbo is following Gollum to the exit, he was able to pluck up enough courage to jump over Gollum instead of killing him. This demonstrates that you do not always have to be a warrior to be brave.

Bilbo is able to overcome his fear and how horrified he felt, when he beheld the spiders pinching and prodding his friends. Bilbo showed an extraordinary amount of bravery as well as cunning when he decided to take on the spiders to save the dwarves. The chapter “Spiders and Flies,” demonstrates how much Bilbo has grown “Already he was a very different hobbit from the one that had run left his house without a pocket-handkerchief from Bag-End long ago. He had not had a pocket-handkerchief for ages. He loosened his dagger in its sheath, tightened his belt, and went
Finally, the bravest moment of Bilbo Baggins is when he gives the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elven King in order for his friends to accept the deal that was to be made. This is brave because he was risking getting abandoned by his friends in order to
From this experience Bilbo leanr that you can never underestimate the inteliigence, and the striotypes that say strength is everything are missleaading. Bilbo also learnt and developed through his own experiences, one of those moments was in the misty mountain. Biblo Baggins was assined as the Burgler at the begining of his expidition, his job was to simply find any weakness of the dragon as everything had to have a weakness. Then as Bilbo was creaping out into Smaugs layer he was smelt by the 'sleeping smaug' soon smaug told biblo that the dwarfs were untrustworth and began thinking this was an easy meal. Since smaug underestimated Bibo it allowed him to swiftly escape with his life.
Even though this part of the hero’s journey was portrayed pretty similarly, there is still a bit of a difference. They both used their instincts, but Bilbo was influenced a bit by the dwarves. His Took side had shown while the dwarves were contemplating whether he was fit for the adventure or not. This made him want to prove himself to them. Instincts aren’t normally the cause of the call to adventure, but for some reason, these two very different novels are similar this way.
This causes conflict for Bilbo because the ring is magical and typically helps the person who's wearing it and if it is taken from him he will no longer have that help. When Bilbo refuses to give Gollum the ring, Gollum threatens to kill Bilbo. Bilbo manages to escape Gollum thanks to his wit and riddles, but Gollum caused a bump in the road of
The giant spiders and the wood elves are dangerous, and Bilbo is scared of them, but he overcomes his fears, making him courageous. Courage is shown by Bilbo when he enters Smaugs mountain. Smaug is a very dangerous character that could have killed Bilbo. Smaug tried to burn Bilbo, but Bilbo barely
Instead of being scared, he was brave enough to find out that trolls were the meaning of the light. This means that Bilbo was brave enough to investigate the strange light, and if he didn’t, they could have been captured unexpectedly and eaten, even though
They found themselves fighting mammoth spiders in the forest. While the dwarves were losing the battle, Bilbo used his ring to become invisible and retrieve the bounded company (Jackson). This is an important example of heroism because a timid hobbit became brave to help his comrades. He uses his power of invisibility for the benefit of the dwarves.
As we get farther into this novel we see qualities of heroism and leadership surface in Bilbo. He rescues the dwarves from the spiders and wood elves in Mirkwood and leads them to treasure. He also discovers Smaug’s weak spot. Through all of this, Bilbo refuses to become arrogant. We see this quality when he moves back to Hobbiton.
When people go places and step out of their comfort zones, sometimes they come back a different person. In The Hobbit, Bilbo is an ordinary hobbit, but after his adventure, it is apparent that Bilbo is now a hero. Three events that occur that show this transformation are when Bilbo jumps over Gollum, when Bilbo slays a spider, and when Bilbo travels to the Elvenking and Bard in order to make peace. The moment Bilbo leaps over Gollum demonstrates to the reader how Bilbo is beginning to go from hobbit to hero.
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
At the beginning of the story, Bilbo seems very cowardly, but soon proves that he is indeed brave. Bilbo is very tied up in his very boring, monotonous life and he really does not want to go on the adventure that he is
“Getting rid of dragons is not at all in my line, but I will do my best to think about it. Personally I have no hopes at all, and wish I was safe back at home.” This quote from chapter 12 shows how Bilbo doesn't really want to face Smaug, but only does it since he has something no one else has. He has the special ring, which allows him to face Smaug. Without the ring, he wouldn't be able to face Smaug.
Bilbo was brave, but not aggressively so. He was loyal, but that did not mean he never had doubts. Bilbo Baggins, of Bag End was an honorable Hobbit. He was also the greatest hero of them all, although he may not seem like it.
Bilbo calls the spiders names and sings insulting songs, angering them and luring them away from the dwarves. When Bilbo makes enough distance between the dwarves and the spiders, he goes back to save his friends. Bilbo learns that he has what it takes to change the course of a bad
Gandalf calls Bilbo to adventure at the beginning of the story, and Bilbo is forced to realize that “adventures are not all pony-rides in May-sunshine” (Tolkien 33). Bilbo’s journey to a hero begins with gaining an understanding that he must expose himself to uncertainty in order to help his group. After Bilbo crosses the first threshold with help from Gandalf, he finds himself in the ‘belly of the whale’ with
