Bilbo In The Hobbit

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Bilbo needs a lot of bravery to stand up to the dragon but also Thorin. He stands up to Thorin when he was yelling at Bilbo. Before the journey started Bilbo would not have stood up for himself, but because of this journey Bilbo is more confident in himself. Bravery is an important asset to The Hobbit, without bravery Bilbo would never have went on his journey, the dwarves would have been eaten by the spiders, and Thorin would have died in the Elven Kings dungeon. Not only would this terrible fate have befallen the dwarves, but Smaug would have never been vanquished.

When Bilbo meets Gollum in the cave he shows bravery, as well as compassion. Instead of threatening Gollum, Bilbo plays a game of wits with him to try and convince Gollum to show Bilbo the way out. When Bilbo is reciting the riddles with Gollum he could not think of the answer so Bilbo tries to say “give me some time” but instead he says “Time! Time!” Which luckily for Bilbo was the right answer. Then after these events when Bilbo is following Gollum to the exit, he was able to pluck up enough courage to jump over Gollum instead of killing him. This demonstrates that you do not always have to be a warrior to be brave.

Bilbo is able to overcome his fear and how horrified he felt, when he beheld the spiders pinching and prodding his friends. Bilbo showed an extraordinary amount of bravery as well as cunning when he decided to take on the spiders to save the dwarves.
