Bilbo Journey Analysis

In “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien we hear about Bilbo’s great adventures. On Bilbo’s great journey he gains many spiritual treasures. Bilbo gains self-confidence, loyalty, courage, compassion, and selflessness. Bilbo also dealt with hardships, failures, and accomplishments. His journey with the dwarves and Gandalf helped him gain all these spiritual treasures. Throughout Bilbo’s long journey the dwarves gain respect for him and Bilbo earns a good reputation. At first Bilbo is a small little hobbit that is afraid of adventure. He is used to his routinely everyday life. Throughout his long adventurous journey he adapts to a new way of life and his inner “Tookishness” comes out. He was said to be a burglar but Gandalf said “As soon as I clapped eyes on the little fellow bobbing and puffing on the mat, I had my doubts. He looks more like a grocer than a burglar!” (17) The dwarves had little faith in him, but throughout their journey they learn more about Bilbo. Bilbo gains confidence in chapter five when he finds the ring in the goblins cave. He begins to believe in himself because he now has the power of becoming invisible with the ring. He also gained friendships with the dwarves. They all became companions and very close. Bilbo grew very attached to them. Bilbo took it really hard when Thorin passed away. “Then Bilbo turned away, and he went by himself, and sat alone wrapped in a blanket, and, whether you believe it or not, he wept until hid eyes were red and his voice was hoarse.” (290) At first when he let all of the dwarves in his home he didn’t want to share his food and he was not comfortable with them in his home. After a while you can see how Bilbo gained selflessness because in chapter eighteen he gave up his share of gold to Bard. “Yet a fourteenth share of all the silver and gold, wrought and unwrought, was given up to Bard.”
