Start a Journey Being One Hobbit and End Another
“No man steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man” -Heraclitus. So a person always starts a journey being one person, but throughout the journey they may face obstacles along the way, in this case a river. But they have to problem solve and persevere to get over the river and complete their goals and more. The outcome of the journey may be bad or it may be good, but they have completed their goals and learned a lot along the way. But they have to get back to where they started this journey. So they cross the river and it has changed, it may not be noticeable but it has and so has the person who is crossing it. Just like in The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Bilbo is a homely hobbit who goes on a journey. But along the way Bilbo faces many obstacles and meets many new people, who either help him to succeed or give him more challenges so he may fail. So each obstacle has a different outcome. And with that Bilbo improves on being a burglar (maybe not a good thing) making him over confident, selfish, and greedy. These are not the best traits

For instance he improves on being a leader, which makes him become more ingenious, diligent, and brave, these help him immensely. Along with that, he improves on being a peacemaker. Which make him more decisive, forgiving, and friendly. These traits all change Bilbo for the better (for the most part), to help him grow as a person and improve at his roles.
First Bilbo improves on being a better burglar, making him over confident, selfish, and greedy. Though they are not the best traits to have, they do come in handy at one point or another. Bilbo’s first character trait is that he can be over confident “He should have gone back and warned his friends that there were three fair-sized trolls at hand, in a nasty mood...“
The first character I want to talk about is Mr. Bilbo Baggins because in my view he is the character that went thorough the most change in compare to any other character that we read about so far. Mr. Bilbo Baggins is the main character/hero in the book and we can analyze and critique his journey from “Joseph Campbell: Hero with a Thousand Faces, 1949.” In the beginning of the book, Mr. Bilbo Baggins is living in Bag End, a hobbit community, like every other hobbit he is comfortable and content. He loves his food, his pipe, and his snug little hole. This here, Bag End, is the ordinary world and this where Mr. Bilbo Baggins lives in, but there is more to Mr. Bilbo Baggins than what meets the eye.
From this experience Bilbo leanr that you can never underestimate the inteliigence, and the striotypes that say strength is everything are missleaading. Bilbo also learnt and developed through his own experiences, one of those moments was in the misty mountain. Biblo Baggins was assined as the Burgler at the begining of his expidition, his job was to simply find any weakness of the dragon as everything had to have a weakness. Then as Bilbo was creaping out into Smaugs layer he was smelt by the 'sleeping smaug' soon smaug told biblo that the dwarfs were untrustworth and began thinking this was an easy meal. Since smaug underestimated Bibo it allowed him to swiftly escape with his life.
The steps of The Heroic Journey start out within the normal life of the ordinary world. In The Hobbit,
Even though this part of the hero’s journey was portrayed pretty similarly, there is still a bit of a difference. They both used their instincts, but Bilbo was influenced a bit by the dwarves. His Took side had shown while the dwarves were contemplating whether he was fit for the adventure or not. This made him want to prove himself to them. Instincts aren’t normally the cause of the call to adventure, but for some reason, these two very different novels are similar this way.
Bilbo’s beliefs throughout his life before his great adventure were fairly narrow-minded. He believed that having an extravagant home with the approval of his neighbors was extremely important. Doing anything out of the ordinary was unexpected out of Mr. Bilbo Baggins as he was very predictable in all his actions. As mentioned in the book, you could tell what a Baggins would say even before he answered your question. I believe that Bilbo always had the same beliefs throughout the book, but that some came out clearer in different situations.
Life is a learning experience which most of the time requires one to change. In the book, The Hobbit, Bilbo undergoes a very positive change of poltroon to a gallant and adventurous little hobbit. Three instances of this occurring are when he goes to pick-pocket the trolls, when he finds a way into the mountain, and his fight with the giant spider. The first instance that begins to advance Bilbo’s personality is when he decides to pickpocket the trolls.
Cameron Canfield Ms. Hack English 9 28 September 2017 Have you ever been on a quest that could have possibly end your life? In The Hobbit by: J.R.R Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins is often torn between his love of the comforts of home and his desire for adventure. Bilbo Baggins does not like to travel and much prefers his comfort of his hobbit hole. He was not happy to be going on this quest but was reluctantly persuaded to go.
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Bilbo needs a lot of bravery to stand up to the dragon but also Thorin. He stands up to Thorin when he was yelling at Bilbo. Before the journey started Bilbo would not have stood up for himself, but because of this journey Bilbo is more confident in himself. Bravery is an important asset to The Hobbit, without bravery Bilbo would never have went on his journey, the dwarves would have been eaten by the spiders, and Thorin would have died in the Elven Kings dungeon.
In ‘The Hobbit’, we see Bilbo Baggings change the way he views the world. At the start of the book Bilbo was not interested in life outside of the shire or hobbit hole. But by the end, he was introduced to the outside world and became familiar with the views of others. Such as the elves, dwarves, and dragons. After being popularized with the “outside” Bilbo then yearned for adventure, compared to before when Gandalf had to trick Bilbo into
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
Bilbo’s Transformation/Maturation Some people say that people never change, while others believe that if given the chance, they will. In this case, J.R.R. Tolkien gives the character Bilbo Baggins the chance to change dramatically in his book The Hobbit. Bilbo undergoes many significant changes in his personality as a result of engaging in Gandalf's journey with the dwarves. The most important transformations include Bilbo going from cowardly to brave, from being ridiculed to respected and from being helpless to resourceful.
Change is something that is hard for most people to accomplish. Change can mean going out of your comfort zone to fulfill something that has the delusion of being absolutely mental. Bilbo goes through a dramatic change in The Hobbit from being the unadventurous, dull hobbit to being the unshrinking, adventurous hero. He does this when he finds the ring, when he frees the dwarves from the giant spider’s webs, and when he helps the dwarves escape from the Wood Elves.
Along the way, they overcome many obstacles that threaten their lives and put their trust for one another to the test. Bilbo learns that there is more to him than he realizes and through hard work and dedication, he can accomplish almost anything. Overcoming these problems and learning more about himself helped Bilbo change from an ordinary, self-doubting hobbit into a clever, courage-filled, loyal hero. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.
He said, “I don’t think I ought to leave my friends like this, after all we have gone through together” (244). Bilbo was kind to everyone he was loyal and generous, which all show his
The company faces many challenges while Gandalf aids them. Eventually, Bilbo becomes forced to take charge and lead the company to the mountain. The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
