The Hunger Games story, Catching Fire, is connected to many themes and had lots of well thought-out characters, foreshadowing and symbols. One of the most important symbols in the story was the mocking jay. The Mocking Jay is used to show rebellion, survival and hope which are all major themes in Catching Fire. As well as being a symbol for rebellion, it also foreshadowed that District 13 may actually still be alive. After the war between the Districts and the Capitol, it was rumored that the Capitol destroyed district 13. The Capitol later confirmed these rumors by showing footage of the destroyed District 13 each year. The problem was that every time they showed footage of district 13, there was always a mocking jay that sat in the exact same sport every time the footage was aired. This led Katniss to believe that all was not what it seemed, and that district 13 may still be out there. This was then confirmed later on in the book. Another time foreshadowing was used was when Katniss figured out the arena was a clock with the help of Wiress. “But her [Wiress] eyes are dilates with fear, and when I speak, she doesn't respond except to say with ever-increasing urgency, “Tick, tock.” She does seem to be trying to tell me something,” (Collins, …show more content…
First of all, the biggest theme is resistance, where ever you go in the story you will see someone resisting, it’s that huge because the protagonist is rebelling against the capitol in different ways throughout the entire book, by hunting, or straight out not listening to the Capitols orders. Another theme that you can discover easily is warfare. The people lives are on the line every year because of the mini-war called the Hunger games, a battle to a death with only one survivor. Lastly Loyalty, You can see at the end of the book, Peeta and his group did everything to keep Katniss alive, even if they needed to kill themselves to save
Some of the main characters in the book are Katniss Everdeen, and Peeta Mellark. In literary terms foreshadowing is a method by which the author uses specific verbiage in a story to tell, or foreshadow, what is going to happen. The reader may feel as if they know what is going to happen before they read it, they could feel like a clairvoyant or that they are having a déjà vu experience. Ambrose Bierce’s story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” has instances of foreshadowing that allude to the death of Peyton Farquhar before the story reaches the climactic point of telling of his fate. The first instance of foreshadowing is when Peyton Farquhar thinks that he can escape the hangman’s noose and swim home.
For this task I will be presenting about Katniss Everdeen from the hunger games and how she is a tragic hero and I will be relating this back to the greek hero Oedipus. What makes a hero, a hero as stated by the reproject “Are people who transform compassion (a personal virtue) into heroic action (a civic virtue). In doing so, they put their best selves forward in service to humanity. A hero is as an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause” (prezi.com). As you all know Katniss is the main character of hunger games and is identified as a tragic hero from the beginning to the end of the story.
In William Faulkner’s short story “Barn Burning,” Sartoris Snopes’s father, Abner, burns the property of people he works for as a means of vengeance for being wronged. At the commencement of the story, Abner is on trial for supposedly burning Mr. Harris’s barn following a dispute over a pig. To begin his argument, Mr. Harris mentions to the judge that Abner’s hog had repeatedly gotten loose and into his corn crop. Mr. Harris returned the hog back to Abner twice before keeping it, even being so nice as to give him the proper wiring to fix his pig pen. Following Mr. Harris’s keeping of the pig until a one-dollar fee was paid, a black man representing Abner came over with the dollar, leaving with the foreboding words “‘Wood and hay kin burn’”
Has there ever been a time when something was seen and a thought was brought to mind, what if, the universe was trying to speak to you saying that would happen to that you in the future? What about when it actually happened? Pete Hautman’s book Rash does just this in the act of foreshadowing. There are many times in the book when something is said or happens and then later in the book, a larger scale of that event or act happens. It brings about a strange sense of Deja vu.
There is a rebellion going on that the capitol has no idea about because during the games at the end of the book Katniss shoots an arrow at the force field that surrounds the arena where the tributes are fighting. Another major theme in this book is the theme of survival while keeping your feelings and . Katniss, represents this theme very well because she is going into a dangerous and risky game that the capital uses children to
The theme is first represented by Katniss when she has to take responsibility for her mother and her sister Prim by feeding them and taking as much care as she can of them. In the first chapter Katniss explains that her father had died in the coal mines when she was only ten.

Key Assignment One: “The Landlady” In “The Landlady,” by Roald Dahl, the author uses foreshadowing to alert the reader of the possible calamity that will befall the main character, Billy Weaver. Immediately, readers are provided with foreshadowing clues to the outcome of the story such as, “But the air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks” (Page 62). Roald Dahl drops hints ‘deadly cold’ and ‘flat blade of ice’, in the text, to foreshadow Billy's fate. Being that both statements are associated with violence, Billy may be in unavoidable grave danger.
Likewise, Katniss seems to be making fun of the popular slogan of the Hunger Games: “May the odds be ever in your favor.” Obviously the odds are not in anyone’s favor because at the end of the day the tributes are either going to die or they are going to kill everyone else and have to live with the memories for the rest of their lives. Their is no real winner in that situation, yet the Capital makes it seem like a fun game, the Hunger “Games”. Capital children are mocking it because they know they never have to live it. According to Maria Magher, “The people of District 12 suffer daily from hunger and poverty.
All of these factors are presented in the novel throughout the experience of Katniss Everdeen in the games. Katniss is a 16 years old teenager from District-12, one of the districts where families suffer to put a something in their empty stomach. Her bad luck leads her to become a tribute in the hunger games, which is an undebatable evidence that the "Hunger Games" novel is a dystopia. The Hunger Games trilogy revolves around universal dystopian themes such as :oppression, rebellion, class tension as well as appearance vs. reality ," Collins creates the world that on one hand seems quite improbable and extreme, but on the other, vividly reflects some specific issues in a real world, like social inequalities, ignorance and passivity of the people" (Macanić 7). Oppression is perhaps the most common and prevalent dystopian theme as it serves as a warning against a highly probable dark future through shedding light on the dark side of contemporary trends such as advanced technology and reality TV-shows .The Capitol 's oppression operates on two levels; districts and individuals. The districts in general and districts 11 and 12 in particular have suffered great injustices at the ruthless hands of the Capitol ; however, there is no greater injustice than The Hunger Games themselves not only are the people of Panem forced to surrender their children as tributes for the Capitol 's citizens viewing pleasure for a crime they had no hand in committing ,but they are also forced to watch helplessly as their children are killed in the most brutal of manners .In Catching Fire (2009) , President Snow decrees that " the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors" in order to get rid of Katniss once and for all ,and to further assert the Capitol 's dominance and quell any thoughts of rebellion(172).
