Columbus Day Conundrum Every year on the second Monday of October America celebrates one of its oldest “patriotic” holidays, Columbus Day. Columbus Day is a day to commemorate the discovery of the Western World by Christopher Columbus. Columbus landed in the New World on October 2, 1492 and is ultimately credited with and remembered for discovering the Americas. The United States of America, itself, has always been comprised of immensely patriotic citizens making it no surprise that the so called discoverer of such a beloved country has a holiday dedicated to him. The idea of a holiday for the man who ‘found’ the ‘New World’ from afar, does not seem all that unusual. However, when one begins to understand the kind of man Columbus really was, …show more content…
America’s citizens are often very patriotic and love to celebrate those that have helped make their great nation, Columbus, supposedly, being one of these people. However, it is quite astonishing that Columbus Day is even celebrated as a patriotic holiday, considering all of the terrible things he did to the indigenous people of the New World. Citizens all over America express many different beliefs about the world, but the vast majority have a universal belief that murder and cruelty are wrong, so why celebrate a man who practically specialized in unnecessary, unprovoked cruelty. Many know the arrival of Europeans on American soil was terrible for the Native Americans, but few know the role Columbus himself played in the cruelty indigenous people …show more content…
Citizens. There are many groups of people who strongly believe that Columbus contributed to the world in a very constructive way. Many are very persistent in their beliefs that Columbus Day should continue being glorified. Many argue that Columbus Day is a patriotic holiday that celebrates the man who discovered this great nation. Along with this, they argue that it is a day that celebrates the heritage of millions of Italian Americans. Another argument that is provided by those praising Columbus Day is that he is remembered as the man who merged the old and the new worlds. While these are all fair points, they are more based on Columbus’ alleged impact on today’s world. The idea that Columbus discovered the New World is not far off considering it is taught to children at young ages, but what this point fails to include, is the fact that the New World was already inhibited. Sons of Italy’s article, which is in support of Columbus day states, “Columbus Day is the only day which the nation recognizes the heritage of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans (Sons of Italy)”. This is understandable, but it is a more glorified idea which isn’t truly what the holiday is about. This insinuates that the holiday is specifically for Italian Americans to celebrate their ancestors descent from Europe and to the New World. The
The United States of America celebrates Columbus Day, to commemorate the day Christopher Columbus landed in the New World, on the second Monday of October. The United States should not be celebrating Columbus Day because Christopher was not a very nice person. He made strict laws about obtaining gold and bringing its overseas, enslaved and murdered millions of native Americans, and he did not even step foot in America, the main country that celebrates this day in history. In a letter from Christopher Columbus to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, Columbus recommends rules and regulations for a new colony, for the benefit of Spain.
Christopher Columbus may have discovered the New World in 1492, but some people disagree that he should be honored with finding the new world . The USA celebrates the discovery of the new world on the second Monday in October every year, and most people agree with him being honored for finding the New World, others think not. He risked his life and the life of others to sail over the treacherous sea; however, some historians and Native Americans think he is a slaver and a murderer of millions. On the other hand other people love him, and adore him, and love the day off from work and school. In these 2 articles they have different perspectives of Christopher Columbus’ discovery.
Columbus Day is an American and patriotic holiday celebrated in all 50 states of the U.S since 1971, when congress passed the law. America should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day because he brought cruelty, heś been given false credit, and the legacy of the day is not as wonderful to Native Americans and African Africans. With ¨discovering” America, he also brought cruelty to the the indigenous people because he tortured, killed, and encourage his men to rape the native women. There are things that he didn't even do and he was still given credit such as discovering America. The legacy of the Columbus Day is not as remarkable to the Native Americans and African Americans because it just reminds them the cruelty that happened.
People have celebrated this day as early as the eighteenth century, but it did not become an official federal holiday until 1937. The holiday was made to celebrate the beginning of settlement in america by the europeans. People from all over the world may honor it many different ways such as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and to honor Native Americans. However many people do not celebrate this holiday inspired by the Italian explorer. They find hardship in celebrating the fact that he destroyed the native population, basically helped to start slavery in America and he was terrible to
Many historians and textbooks argue that Christopher Columbus should be celebrated for his accomplishment, of finding new lands. A quote from the text,“When we read the history books given to children in the United States, it all starts with heroic adventure-there is no bloodshed-and Columbus Day is a celebration” (Zinn 5). With this in mind Zinn had made an argument as to how this was wrong. That there was
Columbus Day should be celebrated because Columbus had done a lot to get to the point of sailing. According to documents 6 “ Christopher Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds before Columbus ' time all European voyages had followed coastlines, or cross open seas to land previously known or at least cited by storm driven ships. Only Columbus set off directly across the board, unknown sea with no specific knowledge of how far an extended or what lay on the other side. “This is a Columbus went through a lot of odds to find Asia even though he landed in the Bahamas. This also shows that Columbus was the only one who didn 't get there by the storm.
However. because Columbus brought catastrophes to the Native Americans. many people opposed the Columbus jubilations. They began to believe whether the Columbus Day should be considered as a national vacation in the United States. Surely.
I totally agreed with you. I too don't think Columbus Day should be a celebration of Columbus victory in discovering America. However, I do think we should keep the holiday and make it a day to grief for the lives lost from Columbus' violence and greed. I don't think Americans repay the Indians enough after putting them through such horror and genocide. Instead, we hurt them even more by naming a Holiday after their murder.
The day represents one of the greatest injustices in Human history. Dedicating a day to Columbus means that we support his acts. We support him and his orders that led to the killing of an entire nation. That is absurd! This day should be dedicated to the native Americans to honor their History and Culture.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Do you believe that we should celebrate Columbus Day as a national holiday? Do you believe he is a hero? or a Villain? Some people have different points of view when it comes to a question like this; sometimes, their opinion may reflect their religious beliefs or because of all the terrible acts against humanity in the New World. We also do have to remember that he did discover America; he started the Columbian Exchange, and brought many different values to this new world he just discovered. Even though I believe that he is a hero and we should celebrate him through a national holiday, I want to give you a chance to decide whether you think he is a hero or a Villain and choose if we should celebrate him as a national holiday.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
Furthermore, Christopher Columbus was a very greedy man that only wanted to be rich and famous. He later got arrested for his greed and immorality and taken back to Spain. Christopher Columbus day is insulting to many American Indians and many native-born Americans. Many Americans oppose Christopher Columbus day. Columbus’ expeditions set in motion the worldwide transfer of people, plants, animals, diseases, and cultures that greatly affected nearly every society on the planet.
Bartolome de las Casas is used by Zinn for many of the sources of the cruelty against the natives, but even Zinn admits that "his figures are exaggerations"(). However, Zinn still puts Bartolome under much less criticism than Columbus even though the priest did his share in being cruel to natives; this was most likely because he wanted to make the point that Columbus should not be so heroized. Overall, the monarchy of Europe is truly to blame for sending the greediest men with orders only to extract wealth from the New World. Whether or not America should celebrate Columbus Day is a highly debatable topic, but it should not really be celebrated or called after a relatively cruel man. Columbus just happened to be in charge of the right ship with a gamble that turned out to make him extremely successful, but he did not have anything, besides good seamanship to make him any more exciting than the average
