Growing up in the town of Cicero, I reckoned that it was the perfect place; it was my home. I’ve resided here my whole life with my two parents and older sibling. To me, my parents were the heroes of the world. My childhood innocence guarded me from seeing how grocery store employees used to deduce that my mother was lazy for utilizing the link card, and assuming that my father was dense for speaking broken English. Even if our financial situation is not as inadequate as they used to be, there are countless times where my parents come home late from work and still stress an overwhelming amount of time over the bills. As a pre-teen I was embarrassed about taking the public bus with my mother while my friends would see me from their car windows. …show more content…
In my eyes it was too expensive and I held the thought of not wanting to put my parents in debt. As a senior, college is my only opportunity to escape the situation I live in. Receiving this scholarship would help me complete my education that is crucial to finding a well-paid job. A degree is much more than a title, it is an opportunity to overcome the financial difficulties my parents have and are still facing. The support I receive at home motivates me to strive for something greater and that change begins with me. My mother once said to me “I don’t want you to end up like me”. At that moment, I knew I had to push myself beyond my ability to make something of myself. I am 9 out of 1079 in my senior class, have a 4.5 GPA and for sure am not afraid of hard work. By receiving this scholarship, it will help my parents and especially myself from having to take out loans and place myself into debt. It will aid me into achieving my future years of education and give me the opportunity to demonstrate that I will not end up like my parents. As a future university student I will remind myself every day to be grateful, to remain humble, and to treat every day like a new chance to redeem …show more content…
From a child until now I am blessed to have a family, but for some students that isn’t the case. At Morton, I have seen countless numbers of fights, drama, and students failing classes. It is true that Morton doesn’t have the best reputation, but the students are not to blame. These unfortunate students have grown up to believe that the streets is the only place for them. When they think “future” they don’t think university, they think working like our parents. However, these broken students are not broken because they want to be, but because they were raised that way. People outside of Cicero see us as troubled teens, but they don’t see the eyes of students suffer from depression, lack of motivation, and poverty. They have grown to hate school and give up on themselves because they don’t receive the support from adults; instead, some adults see us as an inconvenience. In my future, I want to be the change that students deserve. These teens were forced to grow up too quickly, and need a place where they can express their troubles, receive aid, and learn that peace can solve almost anything. Although I am undecided about my major, my future objectives revolve around giving back to my community and more importantly the teens, as they are the ones who determine our
This section involves the examination of student culture and who or what made them the way they are today, as Edmundson seems to think that it is not the students’ fault for creating the culture in which they are ensnared. He has come up with this idea that students are “self-contained” and that “strong emotional display is forbidden” (7); but this is simply their “cool consumer culture” at work since the “specter of the uncool creates a subtle tyranny” (21, 8). Students are “desperate to blend in,” and with that in mind, they are neither passionate nor enthusiastic and are “nonassertive,” afraid to speak out and be aggressive (8). Edmundson continues this section by giving answers—his belief of what has happened. He goes from “persona ads” to sheltered childhoods to “future prospects” to “rebound teaching,” all of which circle back to his claim about his students not having an intellectual dedication to school (8, 10-11).
It has, especially, helped with choosing a career and being prepared for my future. The scholarship will help further my interest in to a firefighting and emergency medical services career, and I believe I should receive this scholarship
Reyes leaves his listeners focused on how the absence of love and uniqueness in the education system is deteriorating passion, tradition, self-confidence, and personality from the mindset of the future students who aren't privileged with a backbone support

One journalist from the Mercury Times even claims that “We 've created a cadre of brittle young people who believe they are failures if they don 't meet the impossible standards of their elders” (Herhold). Thus, students either feel victimized by the system or have adapted to the unrealistic level of

Unsurprisingly, students, including myself, would easily succumb to this mindset. We were in a challenged area in which no one expected more than a suspension or referral from the students and as such, we would fall into a void absent of any sort of motivation. We were merely thought of as “the ghetto” with no real potential for higher education. Many students believed this trend to be a self-evident truth. We were not smart, we were not capable, and we were not enough.
Since I only live with my mom,and she just has one job to pay all of our bills, paying for college is far from our minds. Even though my mom has worked hard to give me everything I needed and supported me all my life, she just doesn’t have enough to afford the privilege of me going to college. But with the help of this scholarship, I might be able to get a college education. If I get this scholarship,I promise that I will not leave it to waste. I will apply this scholarship to help me in my first years at TMCC.
An accomplished educated life is what most students long for, they overcome hardships, make sacrifices, all to make their families proud and their dreams become a reality. Students of all ages, backgrounds apply for college every year in hopes of realizing their dream; some receive free education thru grants, financial aid, or parental assistance. Some students aren't so fortunate and for one reason or another, they have to pay for each semester to continue their education. Same as, students who finance or don't have to finance their education strive for the same objective, to eventually graduate. Among both types of students, the ones that pay for their education seemed to be more appreciative, diligent and committed to completing school than the group who received it for free, whom often take it for granted.
As I begin my college education, I want to continue doing my best in order to accomplish my goal of becoming a registered nurse. With the scholarship money I can have the peace of mind of solemnly focusing on college. Students who have to work to continue their education have trouble focusing on school and do not have the extra time to study or go to tutoring sessions. In many cases, having to work while attending college usually leads to failing or dropping the class due to extra stress and the idea of income. As well, this scholarship will give me more time to focus on my education and to continue my volunteer work helping the
Overall, I wish to attend college to better all aspects of my life. I desire to maximize my potential and work ethic to become better. Being a first generation student will not be easy, for I have no one to tell me about experiences. I am very proud and honored to tell people that I am in college.
In school, the teachers are focused more on our academics than our life problems. Although the school does teach us some of the basic life skills that we need, they do not teach us the most important ones that revolve around our lives every single day. “Though high school and college are excellent in
After carefully evaluating my abilities, desire to widen and reform my knowledge and aspiration to advance my career, I wish to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science at College. My goal is to work on the contemporary issues in the Information Technology industry and employ the knowledge to provide better solutions to the complex IT challenges. In the years to come, I envision myself as a lead architect designing systems which will get smarter and more customizable through interactions with data, devices and people. My whole life has been a multi-faceted learning curve which has prepared me to take the academic challenges of the graduate life.
I already know I will need to be paying for the majority of my college tuition, which is why I have worked so hard and had a job since I was 16. I know many students around my financial status whose parents are paying for all of their college, but for my family this isn’t the case. The tuition will fall mainly on my shoulders, and I believe I deserve this scholarship to help me pay for
