New definition of college-readiness and the significance of college knowledge
What is college readiness? Some people might think that getting all A 's and B 's and passing classes is the only way to be college ready. Yes, it does play an important part in being ready for college but there is more to it. To be college ready means that you have to be prepared to face the reality of the changing world, not only academically, but you also need to have knowledge and a good understanding of what the real world is about. You need to be able embrace the new challenge you 're about to face.

The ACT test is a test based on the materials you learn in high school. This test measures whether you are academically ready for college or not. It covers the things students should have already learned in high school to guide them through college. The ACT is a normal test like the other tests, it covers the basic reading, writing, and mathematics. Then we have the SAT, which is a test like the ACT, that tells you whether you are college ready or not. This test is basically based on things they don 't teach you in high school. It also covers the reading, writing and mathematics skills that students need in order to be college ready. The SAT predicts what a student is capable of learning. The PERT is also a test students take to get ready for college. The PERT is defined as The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test. The purpose of this test is to assess academic skills, verify college readiness, and determine course placements. Students in high school takes those tests to determine whether they are ready to do college level work in reading, writing and mathematics. "As a result, the scores students receive on state tests may not be good indicators of college readiness, but students may believe that passage of the state test is just such an indicator"(Conley, 2007). The scores that you receive on those tests also matter. The scores students receive on those tests don’t necessarily determine their intelligence or that if they get a low score they can 't get in college. The purpose of these tests is to determine how ready a student is for college. The Highest score a student can get on the SAT is a 1600, and a 21 on the ACT however, Different school requires different scores on different tests. Students have to make sure they get the scores the college they want to get into
But for most students, the places to provide those basics are elementary and middle school” to show that students learn most of their core knowledge in their Kindergarten through Twelfth grade years (223). Also, Murray firmly believes that “For a society of immigrants such as ours, the core knowledge is our shared identity that makes us Americans together rather than hyphenated Americans” so we should not treat people from different nationalities any less when learning our core knowledge (224). However, I agree with Murray with the fact that most of our knowledge is learned in the years before getting college education. The only difference is that I disagree with Murray because I believe that in order for people to get a career that they want, they will need this college experience to get prepared for the specific information that they will be required to know for their
Kat Cohen, in her article, “The Truth About Standardized Tests: How They Affect Your College Application.” published in The Huffington Post on January 13, 2014, writes that the SAT test is a factor in college admissions that can set a student apart from other applicants, or ultimately remove them from the standings. Cohen also writes that if a student's SAT score is not high enough, their applications might not even be considered. Cohen explains that as college admission rates continue to reach record lows each year, every small component of the admissions process is becoming very important. Rebecca Klein says that now that the SAT has become a prime factor in college admissions, more and more students are taking the exam.
College readiness is defined as having the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in college level courses without remedial help. Recent data from the New York State Education Department, Monroe High School has a college readiness rate of 26%. In comparison, East Irondequoit High School has a slightly higher college readiness rate of 31%. We have to also consider when comparing high schools is the availability of Advanced Placement (AP) classes. AP classes are college-level courses that allow high school students to earn college credits while still in high school.
Does college guarantee you’ll be successful? The reading “College Prepares People for Life” written by Freeman Hrabowski claims that college is a big step to becoming successful. In his essay, he introduces that college does not only help in finding jobs but that it prepares people for the real world. He uses examples from educators data as well as personal experiences. When Hrabowski mentions these examples in his essay he tries to convince why he is right.
Should The SAT Determine Your Future Throughout the years there have been many questions regarding the reliability of the SAT. Should an aptitude test be such a large factor in college acceptance. I firmly believe The SAT should not be a factor in college admissions because it has proven to be biased , unreliable, and overall unjust. The Scholastic Aptitude test, or SAT is no stranger to high school students across America. The test is divided into two sections of math and verbal language skills, a total of 138 questions with a point scale ranging from 200-800.
A students ACT and SAT score is just one portion of many college applications. Colleges and Universities look at GPA, an essay, and letter of recommendations to determine a student’s admission. Many people believe that the importance of the ACT or SAT score depends on the college and what other things the student has to offer (Drinkworth, 2015). The ACT and SAT tests can be an important factor in college admissions because they tests are on all subject areas, math, reading, writing, and science. This is certainly an important factor: because high schools have differing grade scales, plus some amount of grade deflation or inflation, having a nationally consistent test is useful. However, while the SAT may be standardized, it is far from equitable. It has been found to have significant bias, particularly income-wise: as Biamonte (2013) found, the difference in average SAT scores between the lowest and highest income groups is nearly 130 points per section, adding up to a hefty difference across the test’s three sections. This disparity is partially explained by the use of aforementioned coaching methods; test prep classes and tutoring services are often pricey, a score-boosting luxury only available to those in higher income brackets.
The tests only ask for knowledge or facts that the student can barely recall and when taking these tests they are taken on a school day and they take 2-3 hours to complete. Standardized testing began in the 1920s to test students ability but was renamed to Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) (Livia). The American College Testing (ACT) and the SAT are both used in the United States for college admission. However Swope and Miner believe that, “Standardized tests will never answer the questions of what our children need to learn to be leaders and informed citizens in a multicultural, ever-changing world” (Cole, Hulley and Quarles 19).
Standardized tests do not work because of inaccuracy, bias, and student misunderstanding. The ACT and SAT tests are used as college entrance exams all over the US. Most schools require you to take one or both of these tests and get a minimum score in order to be accepted to that school. The SAT and ACT have been proven to be fairly accurate at predicting a student’s average performance for their freshman year in college.
College and career readiness are when a student has achieved skills, behaviors, and knowledge to successfully complete college courses. The basic skills and behaviors are an academic path in which a child has a layout from middle school to ensure when he/she enters college, they do not have to take remedial courses. Remedial courses are basic skills courses for students who lack adequate preparation for college-level courses. There is nothing wrong with a remedial course as it aids in a foundation to getting back on track. These courses are credit-bearing but will cost.

This semester has me stressed more than I have before, so stressed about AP exams and college readiness.
In “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Charles Murray offers his opinion on the number of students that pursue a B.A. He believes that two year or four year colleges are not needed for a majority of students who could instead pursue other life paths. He discusses the ability for the general knowledge needed to be learned in primary and secondary school, and for a lessened need for a “brick-and-mortar” institution the problems with the current secondary and higher educational issues including the lessened need to acquire a B.A. All members of society need certain skills in order to be productive members of society. They need to know general facts about the country they live in, general history, and general geography.

Students have the choice which test they would prefer to take and most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. There are a few key differences between the SAT and ACT, which may make one test more suitable than the other for those taking the tests. Many studies have proven that the SAT and ACT are not the best judge of future success, and that colleges should focus their applications more on past grades and accomplishments to decide which students should be accepted to their university. SATs and ACTs are not an effective measure of college readiness and future academic success.
Standardized tests have played a large role in the education system over the past few years, serving as a way for schools to determine a student’s academic progress and skill levels. Since the 1960s, standardized tests have been a requirement for school curriculums. Students are instructed to answer a set of questions based on skills that have been taught previously throughout the year. The recorded scores are then considered by schools, colleges, and universities to observe the academic levels of a student and their individual progress. Many of these tests such as the ACT, SAT, and others are weighted as a graduation requirement and viewed by colleges across the nation.
