Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were both two African American civil rights activists who were very prominent throughout history. They fought for what they believed in but in vastly different ways. Martin Luther King Jr. was born to a middle class family and was well educated. Malcolm X, on the other hand, grew up in a rather hostile environment with barely enough schooling. Both their speeches, “I Have a Dream” and “The Ballot or the Bullet” may have shared some common traits, but at the same time, differed greatly in various aspects. Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream” is vastly recognized as one of the best speeches ever given. His passionate demand for racial justice and an integrated society became popular throughout the Black community. His words proved to give the nation a new vocabulary to express what was happening to them. Martin was famously a pacifist, so in his speech, he advocated peaceful protesting and passively fighting against racial segregation. The main idea of his speech is that all people were created equal and, although this is no longer the case nowadays, King felt it must be the case for the future. He argued peacefully, yet passionately and powerfully. In preparation for the speech, he studied the Bible, The Gettysburg Address and the US Declaration of Independence and he alludes to all three in his address. The intensity of King’s speech is built through parallelism, metaphors, bold statements and rhythmic repetitions:
Dr. King addressed the masses in a passionate, emotional manner. He didn't fail to point out that society was the issue, he didn't single anyone out. From the way he chose to phrase his words, to keeping his tone serious and firm, without being irate. He used ethos, in saying " And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true".
Martin Luther King Martin Luther King’s rhetoric speech “I Have a Dream” given in 1693, March on Washington, has noticeable different rhetorical devices that set this speech apart. Devices that Martin Luther King used to become the voice of thousands of people, making his beliefs immortal throughout the years. As for today, society embraces his ideas and he is, until now, the voice of those who could not stand up for themselves. He has such a good way to convert what he sees and believes into words that will later share a message to the word.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a very empowering speech in August 28, 1963 and an informative letter in the margins of a newspaper on April 16, 1963. Dr. King took his time to speak out for every African Americans rights, that made him known as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. The speech that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr wrote “I have a Dream” gives a pathos feel, building ups emotions towards real equality for each and every person, and not just separate, but equal living conditions. It also gives a logos appeal. The speech also called for Civil and Economic Rights.
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were both civil rights activist during the civil rights movement. Both activists gave speeches to large audiences and became very well known across the country. Both activists believed that they should have a program that will teach their philosophies. Although they both wanted to have programs teaching their beliefs, the beliefs they wanted to teach were different. Martin Luther King Jr.’s program would be focused on teaching people how to nonviolently campaign, while Malcolm X’s program would be focused on educating people how the government was working, or rather not working, during this time of civil injustice.
The phrases he repeated were compelling enough that they touched the hearts of the audience and inspired them to take action. These words sprung hope and prosperity and empowered the people to take action in fulfilling these dreams. Another strong use of rhetorical appeal can be seen in his references to children and their future. King appeals to the emotion within parents when he states, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character”. The goal of this statement is for parents to fight for a better life for their kids so that they won’t have to live in a world full of hatred.
“ I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” This famous quote was spoken by the one and only Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I’d like to to share my thoughts about how Dr. King has helped bring people together, how his dream lives on today, and the impact he left behind. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, are two crucial leaders in the civil rights movement. Although, the end goal for both leaders was to put an end to segregation and slavery and to achieve equality, the influential figures share several different and similar approaches to the situation: a radical, pro-violent approach taken by X and a rational, non-violent approach taken by King. The trivial similarities and differences between King 's "Letters from Birmingham Jail" and X 's "The Ballot or the Bullet" range from the style/tone, their thoughts on violent means, and their thoughts on the government. "The Ballot or the Bullet" and "Letters from Birmingham Jail" differ in terms of the style/tone used regardless of the
Martin Luther King Jr. will be forever remembered as a hero of American history for all. Whether sitting in a classroom or watching a television show or simply sitting and listening to a pastor preach in a church, the words of King are still alive today. Many positive changes have been made for African Americans, minorities, and the poor people of America due to the work and dedication of King. Martian Luther King Jr and Malcom X where two political figures during the civil rights movement, both men stood and fought for the same reason but both had very different ways in which they would approach how they fought. Martian Luther King Jr took a difference approach to what Malcom X took, mostly he was very against violence and tried to tell the people to stand up by using their words and not be physical but on the other hand Malcom X took a completely different approach a lot of the time telling people violence is sometimes needed to get the message across and make a change. Both approaches from the two men were completely different but both worked much in the same way and helped support African American at the time, they both show how sometimes each style of approach can be used and when some is more effective than another in certain situations.
In “I Have A Dream”, Martin Luther King Jr. persuades people to treat black with the equal rights as whites have. Not to make blacks superior, but to their be peace among blacks and whites. I found this speech the most compelling because he made everyone believe that his dream could become reality. His dream was that black and whites living as equals, with no rivalries between them. Even though he was assassinated, people still continued trying to make his dream real, which was really inspiring for everyone.
Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech is very influential. It was deliberately written so that he could try to convince the people of America to end segregation. He believed that nothing has been done to stop segregation and he feels the time is now to end it. He used literary devices to explain why segregation needs to be ended now.
