American politics consists of two major political parties. Each party has its own agenda, platforms and goals to make America a better place. These two political parties have been divided by; Democratic Party and the Republican Party or Independents (who are voters that do not identify with one of the two major parties mentioned) it is considered one minor one. Both major political parties took place in the middle of the 19th century, and since then they have been alternating their power between their different candidates. During the 20th century, as the welfare state appeared and as candidates turned to candidate-centered organizations to run their campaigns the American political party has continued to develop gradually.
The Democratic Party claims to aim to renew America. The Democratic Party, was formed in 1828, and was led by Andrew Jackson who was the elected president at that time. Jackson depended on the spoils system, rewarding past supporters and assuring jobs to potential allies if they joined his team. A third party is a political party that disagrees to the main parties in a two-party system. There are a few political parties that present more activity in the united stares for example The Green Party, Libertarians, Reform party, Constitution Party and Natural Law Party. One of the most successful of these third parties is the Reform Party. One of the main problems third parties face is the winner-take all system, also third parties often tend to organize around a single a single issue that can often lead to less popularity among voters. One of the main disadvantages for third parties candidates is the federal campaign finance laws which are rules that dictate who can enter presidential debates. Another disadvantage is that they are usually not allowed on ballots due to the lack of popular support of media attention and signatures to warrant a place under local
The development of a two-party political system manifested by 1795 between the Democratic-Republican Party and the Federalists (Schultz, 2009). Obviously, each party viewed itself as America’s revolutionary ideologist and perceived their opponent’s views as illegitimate. The Democratic- Republican Party, also known as the Republican Party or the Jeffersonian Republicans, preferred a limited government. This party united with one another against Hamilton’s economic policies and Jay’s Treaty. They were against boosting the power of the federal government.
During Revolutionary America, two political parties came about: the Federalists and the Democratic-Republics. The Federalists believed in supported federal administration and were highly in favor of the Constitution, while the Democratic-Republicans favored the idea of extending the Revolution to everyday people. Their party names reflect their standpoints. The Election of 1796 was the first in American History for candidates running for office to belong to organized political parties.
Political parties, Democratic Republicans and Federalists, started in the U.S. because of differing views of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, and the influence of newspapers. Jefferson’s and Hamilton’s different ways of thinking(mostly on issues that was beneficial for the country) played a huge part in the start of political parties. They fought about economy. Jefferson liked farming while Hamilton preferred manufacturing and trade. Interpretation of the Constitution was another thing they fought upon.
The Democratic Party truly arose in the 1930s, with the election of Andrew Jackson.” (wikipedia) http://reclaimdemocracy.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_(United_States)
As the foundations of a successful government system, political parties help keep balance of power and uphold the Democratic ideals of the United States. These parties have origins that can trace back to the early sectional tensions in America. These sectional tensions were the primary reasons for the development and progression of political parties in the United States. As early as 1800, signs of deviation would appear.
Thomas Jefferson once said. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties”. The reason he said this was because he feared a strong central government. Then for some Americans, fears of a strong central government taking advantage came true. This is when the two political parties split.
Both the Democrats and the Republicans like to think of themselves as the true heirs of Thomas Jefferson. The modern Democrats are historically descended from the Democratic-Republican Party that Jefferson himself organized to thwart the ambitions of Alexander Hamilton (although, ironically, they were known as "Republicans" in Jefferson 's time). Democrats around the country annually celebrate Jefferson-Jackson Dinners, avowedly declaring a connection between Jefferson and the modern Democratic Party. But Republicans claim that their platform of small government and low taxes is more in line with true Jeffersonian philosophy than that of the big-government Democrats.
Some obstacles that third parties face include voters believing that their vote for a third party candidate is a waste, since that candidate is unlikely to win. Also, third parties usually focus on a single personality or a single issue and that can lead to less popularity among voters. However, the most significant obstacle a third party faces is the winner-take-all system, where in the majority of states, the presidential candidate gets all the state’s electoral votes with the highest percentage of votes. This basically takes all the chances of a third party wining a presidential election.
I personally feel I am more of a Democrat than a Republican. American Politics The two major political parties of the United States are the Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties such as the Constitution party, the Green party, the Independent party, and the Libertarian party. The Democratic and the Republican Party constantly compete with each other trying to promote their political ideals and searching the means for maintaining their continuous political leadership.
The two most eminent political parties in the United States are the Republicans and Democrats. Though these parties are considerably different, they have some similarities as well. First, the differences. The Republicans and Democrats are most different on their views toward many social issues.
Despite being the only major political party the Democrats experienced a lot of conflict among themselves Eventfully a party known as the Whigs developed. Both the Democrats and Whigs wanted to expand the numbers of voters. They accomplished this by eliminating several voting restrictions put on white males. Like the Federalist the Whigs supported northern merchants. Besides supporting merchants, the only thing members of the Whig party really had in common was there opposition to the Democratic party.
In the late 18th century, America’s founding fathers would have never dreamed of being organized into different political factions: for they were not fans of them. In Federalist 10, James Madison, leading Democratic-Republican thinker, stated that he was skeptical of factions. In his Farewell Address, George Washington, the first President of the United States, warned the American public against the egotistic political factions. Both Madison and Washington believed that factions were signs of corruption. Despite the public warnings against factions, two political parties emerged from our founding fathers: the Federalists, and the Democratic-Republicans.
If there was three parties, and one of the parties won the election by a slight ⅓ vote, it would not be a majority of the people. Therefore the country would turn from a democratic republic to a whole different, less inviting arrangement. For example, In Australia, they are run by a Multi-Party system. The Australian Labor Party won with 35% of the popular vote. In Two-Party systems, it needs to be 51%.
Republicans vs. Democrats When the United States of America was founded, George Washington warned against the formation of political parties. By the time the second election came around there were already two political parties, the Federalist and Democratic-Republicans. These parties eventually turned into the Republican and Democratic parties we have today. While these parties have shifted to become almost polar opposites politically, they still share some common goals.
Any number of political parties may compete. Since the mid-1800’s the two main parties have been Republicans and Democrats. Rival parties give voters a choice during an election. Parties have yet another function in government, which is to focus voters on the issues by discussing them publicly. Democracies were very rare until the recent centuries, it calls for strict conditions that have only developed since the Industrial Revolution.
