Articles of Confederation vs. U.S. Constitution The Articles of the Confederation and the U.S. Constitution are two articles that where written and accepted by the United States as a foundation for their new government. They are both very important documents that have similarities and differences. Some of the main things the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution have in common is that they addressed the needs of its constituencies. Both of these Documents were created with the mind set to provide the foundation for a unified, centralized government. Even though the confederation only lasted from 1781-1789, it was still seen to be valuable with its belief that sovereignty belongs to every state. After the Confederation ended in 1789, the U.S. Constitution took place bringing the states together as a whole. While these two documents have the needs of the nation in mind, they both do have quite a bit of a difference as well. The Articles of the Confederation was the first form of government created by the Continental Congress, which developed an alliance between the thirteen states. In Article 2, section 2 of the Constitution, it states that the president is seen as the commander and chief of the military and that he had the authority to make deals and treaties with the input of the Senate and under the Constitution, the Congress is approved to increase and support armies, which was something quite different than before, when the Confederation was in place. When more power was handed over to the government by the president, they were able to have more authority to govern over its constituencies and to make sure that the nation was safe from any danger both within and outside the United
