Although there is a lot more work to be done, the NFL and other leagues have taken a stance on the egregious situation that befalls those with concussions. There has been a recent decrease in the concussion rate due to the latest concussion protocol that the NFL and many other leagues have implemented that allow for professional trainers to look over players that are suspected of being concussed. Those players are not allowed to go back into the game if they still seem like they have a concussion, increasing the safety of those players who are unwilling to report a concussion for the purpose of being able to continue play. Simple implementations such as better helmets, more trainers, and more physicians could further decrease the concussion rate to make the game even safer. With the joint effort from children’s leagues, the NCAA, and the NFL to make the game more secure, yet simultaneously just as enticing, the entire sport of football would be ameliorated, with very minimal cases of concussions. More parents would be willing to let their children play this new style of football instead of holding them back, as they may have done previously due to the fear of head injury. After a concussion student athletes should sit out for a longer period of time to rest and heal the brain to avoid permanent brain damage or risk a second, more serious concussion. The Impact of Concussions During Football Concussions have become a major problem in athletics throughout the entire world. Head injuries can impact many athletes lives in a negative way. In 2015, the NFL reported 271 concussions through practices, games, and workouts in the 2015 season alone (Breslow). The NFL is the most popular sport in the US (McGarry and Schwartz). It’s competitiveness and excitement were all people focused on until players recognized the true effects concussions can have on a player. Today, only a handful of players come out and speak about the problem, addressing their concerns. The cost of speaking out could be that you would lose respect from your teammates and coaches, as they are trying to preserve a game that they love.
Each year high school athletes suffer from concussions more frequently. In the article, “After a Concussion it’s Unclear When -or if- High School Athletes Should Return to Action,” by Sam McDowell, this issue is addressed. The problem faced with this issue is many states are forming new laws and regulations on how soon athletes who have suffered concussions can return to the game.

There has been research on teens that concussions had occurred in teen’s brains, to find out what type of hit teens gotten by football may of suffer from it. In the article “Concussion program for high school athletes works, Michigan group says” by the Associated Press, states information relating a concussion prevention program. By using baseline testing, the program helps analyze the player’s memory, response time, and attention to diagnose concussions. A large number of head injuries were reported by Michigan schools in both boys and girls sports. The largest number of head injuries was within football. Schools who participated in the program noticed an increase in players who were pulled from their sport because of possible head injuries.

Research Project: NFL Concussions The project that I decided to research was concussions in sports, focusing on the National Football League. Though the NFL is famously known for being hammered with controversy surrounding concussions, they are trying to improve the health and safety measures to prevent them from happening, and to protect players.
