Copper Transformations Prelab Questions Three metals ions are Magnesium, Iron, and Nickel. Iron is used in the sea with iron rich minerals, for substances. Iron was also used in the formation of earth. Magnesium is used in cells of every organism. It helps balance out the functions within the cells. Nickel is used for light absorption in natural environments. Nickel is also used in rings for a cheap substance rather than silver or gold. The material needed for this experiment include a 100mL beaker, goggles, test tubes, droppers, filter paper, funnel, watch glass, graduated cylinder, stirring rod, red litmus paper, and gloves. For this I needed to first obtain deionized water. I cleaned my large graduated cylinder and got 20 + or - 2 mL of deionized water. I then added this water to the beaker that contained the mixture I created from the last step of the experiment. I also gathered 2 boiling stones and added them to the mixture of the last step. I placed the beaker on a hot plate and heated it up to 130 degrees Celsius. I heated up the mixture and waited for it to turn completely black. I stirred the mixture every two minutes and recorded the appearance of the liquid. After the first two minutes the liquid had a few black specks but appeared almost completely like it did before I started heating it up. After another two minutes the mixture appeared much darker but still blue with a couple more black specks in it. After another two minutes the liquid was a lot darker and appeared more black than blue. After another two minutes there were many black specks and the liquid was very dark gray. After another two minutes the gray was a little darker and the blue appearance of the liquid was almost completely gone. After another two minutes the mixtures liquid was completely black with little specks of blue still left as the solid. After I obtained this and measured the mass to make sure I had the right amount, I then added it to my blue solution from the last step of the lab. I placed a watch glass on the beaker and continued to watch the chemical reaction take place and recorded what happened. There was lots of bubbling and come condensate that formed on the watch glass. The Zn began to transform into copper and started floating on top of the liquid after the blue color quality was changed into clear. I stirred periodically to make sure all the bubbling was finished. When it stopped bubbling it indicated that Zn was gone and there wasn't any more to take part of a chemical reaction. It bubbled for a little while longer and I added 7 ½ + or - 1 mL more of sulfuric acid to finish up the chemical reaction. After this had finished I grabbed a new piece of filter paper, a new funnel, and drained out the filtrate and just the copper remained. I then finished the copper in the funnel 3 times with deionized water. After I rinsed the copper I transferred it to a watch glass that had been baked for 20 minutes so it would not contain any liquid so as to not counteract the experiment. After I put the copper on this watch glass I baked the copper in the oven for 20 minutes so there would be no liquid left in that to mess up the mass. After 20 minutes I removed the watch glass with the copper in it and weighed itm making sure to weigh the watch glass
