Cyberbullying is a huge problem in the United States, that happens everyday. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. It affects many people in a negative way and it has to be controlled. In order to do this, schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech because it affects people's lives and distracts everyone in a school environment. Bullying others through a screen can affect people’s lives mentally, physically, and emotionally. Many cannot even go through their day without constantly thinking about the hate they receive once logged into a device. A school’s purpose is to educate and interact with students without distractions, but cyberbullying gets in the way of a perfect school community. Although, many people would think that cyberbullying would distract students a lot, in which they are correct, it also distracts teachers. In the same survey on British teachers, 15.9% claimed that cyberbullying had reduced their productivity and teaching effectiveness (Doc B). If a teacher is not teaching to their best ability, the students scores and grades will decrease which will affect the student’s education and the teacher's career. Plus, cyberbullying makes the staff members feel as if they’ve lost their “dignity and privacy,” (Doc E). Once students find out personal information about teachers and post it online, teachers begin to feel as if the young citizens, whom they teach now know everything they should not know. This then leads to the teachers always having that thought in their mind while “teaching” the kids. Teachers have two lives, a personal life and a work life, and these two should not interfere with each other. Finally, students are also distracted when cyberbullying takes place in school. Students often tend to talk about the incidents while in class (Doc D). During educational learning time, teachers have to stop their lessons to tell the students to get back on task. Also, these children whisper during learning time, which makes them not pay attention. Cyber Bullying leads to distractions for students and staff members at school, which all have negative effects on the
In the article “High-Tech Bullies”, Ingrid Sturgis claims that people should do something about cyberbullying not only because it demeans people, but also because too many students are either committing or attempting suicide, and it is something that needs to be addressed immediately. Sturgis starts out her article by making readers aware of the staggering amounts of cyberbullying arising over the past decade. The article is filled with images and informational side notes that help describe the cyberbullying motives and programs that go against cyberbullying. Throughout the article, Sturgis writes about the ways that some cyberbullies may try to humiliate or harass distinct types of people (including members of the LGBTQ community or people
Introduction Historical records demonstrate that bullying is not a new phenomenon and continues to be a contemporary problem affecting many individuals daily. The twenty-first century saw the rapid rise of technology, internet access, and usage on social media platforms, introducing a new era of communication and interaction within a digital space. Unfortunately, the misuse of technology has created a new form of bullying, referred to as cyberbullying. “Bullying” is traditionally regarded as a deliberate and repeated act of aggressive behaviour in a physical space, with a power imbalance between the victim and the bully. On the other hand, “Cyberbullying” adheres to the exact definition but generally with the use of the internet and other digital
The law regarding schools’ ability to punish students for disrupting the learning environments in schools needs to be strengthened. Schools in this day and age have been facing a more and more frequent problem of having to deal with harassment and bullying online for while the internet does not increase the amount of bullying it does provide a medium to do so that our legal system is not fully prepared to handle. The internet gives students the ability to put out opinions that can very easily make it to a wide audience and indirectly impact the learning environment regardless if there are at school or not. Teachers have even become targets of their own students harassment and it is uncertain whether it is the school 's responsibility to deal with it or not.
What causes the prevalence of cyber-bullying is that some people don’t realize they are victims or perpetrators. They hide behind a mask of anonymity to claim for freedom of expression. But actually, there exist the bounds of free expression and some problematic forms of expression. The effects of this behavior are more serious than they think. Freedom of expression is important but so is social responsibility.
Accoring to the graph of a Survey of British School Teachers, almost hald of cyberbullyed teachers say it was perpetrated by a student, and of these teacher 12.5% say they had to go to a doctor or take a sick leave, suffering from illness/stress. Even more, 5% of these cyberbullyed teachers said they became scared outside of work. This is too much. Teachers should be free to teach well without threats or accussations from their own students. In the case of J.S. vs Blue Mountain School District, J.S. created a MySpace profile making fun of her middle school principal, James McGonigle.

Due to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter things like cyberbullying have become a new way of bullying. Technology has advanced so quickly that the way we communicate with people has changed hugely, particularly in the last few decades. As computers and mobile devices became more acceptable and necessary in our everyday life it was not only businesses that relied on needing internet access. Personal use also increased and schools became increasingly reliant on computers and internet access for education, therefore, it is little wonder that some people see this as a medium for which to communicate with others in a way they probably would not do if they had to make these comments face to face to the recipient. With this in mind, I will discuss what the internet is, what cyberbullying involves, who is involved, why it has become a concern and what is being done about it.
Effects of cyberbullying cannot be underestimated. Long-term effects showed that those who are bullied also became bullies in the future. Similar to bullying in person, immediate effects of cyberbullying are that the youths who are subjected to cyberbullying tend to separate themselves from the society and live alone. They develop inferiority and doubt on their skills and abilities. Having the high possibility to be depressed, the worst solution is to cut their own lives for they can see that it is the only way to answer their problem.
Li Qing, a professor at the University of Calgary, who published “New Bottle but Old Wine: A Research of Cyberbullying in Schools” in the scholarly journal Computers in Human Behavior found that in a survey of seventh graders in an urban environment 54% of them had reported being bullied face-to-face, with over a quarter of them experiencing cyberbullying, and unfortunately many victims and bystanders do not report these incidents to adults (Qing). Technology has advanced rapidly in the last 15 years; it has done great things to improve our lives. Unfortunately, some people use this technology to belittle and abuse others. Many people write off what the victims of cyberbullying go through, however, they may have to deal with the effects that
As an administrator, I don’t want my students bullying each other and I know from doing this research how important it is to stop the bullying when it first stops happening. “Most states now have legislation in place that requires schools to address electronic harassment in their antibullying policies, yet
The most frequently noted topics of cyberbullying is romantic relationships, friendships, sexual activity, and personal appearance. If the school does not act on the situation that is affecting their students then it may interfere with the students learning and learning environment and that can lead to psychological, mental, and physical stress. If that is the case and it usually is then the school is held accountable for not taking any action on the situation. However when this happened in the past school districts played the same card every time this type of situation occurred and said that their hands were tied on the situation because it was not happening on school grounds. So cyberbullying was swept under the carpet and nothing was ever done to deal with cyberbullying happening. It was not very long until the school could no longer get away with doing nothing about online harassment and cyberbullying cases.
Thanks to the widespread of cell phones and the Internet, cyberbullying has become more common. Many people use these technological devices to communicate with their peers, but it is often used to send or post mean-spirited messages intended to hurt or embarrass someone else. The main targets of cyberbullying are students who do not meet the standards of what another student considers to be adequate or cool. Especially in high school, students are working for a high social status(Cyberbullying). Cyberbullying also includes harassing others by sending insulting or offensive comments through social media, online chatting, or text messages.
Technology is getting bigger and bigger each day. With the advance of smart phones, tablets, and laptops it’s become much easier for people to keep in contact with their social media. People can easily stay in touch with friends all the time on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram and by texting. Many people are taking advantage of that opportunity and that seems like people are becoming more sociable but actually it is making people less sociable. People are spending too much time on their phones instead of having a face to face conversation.
