Thesis Both Nationalism and Sectionalism developed concurrently during the Era of Good Feelings. The two main reasons why nationalism increased was because of Henry Clay’s American System and Monroe’s policy to increase nationalism. Clay’s AS created a better national infrastructure that tightened America together. Monroe’s policy was to promote national unity and America’s power, which strengthens nationalism. At the same time, sectionalism increased because of the growing divide between the North and South. This was because of their differing opinion on slavery and economic structures. Nationalism became of greater importance in politics at the time because of several factors: Monroe’s policy focused on unity, the AS connected America, and John Marshall’s rulings contributed to national power. …show more content…
Document 3 (John Quincy Adams, Diary) This helps because it talks about the Missouri Compromise which was about the issue of Missouri becoming a slave state — favorable for the South not of the entire nation (i.e. sectionalism). The Monroe Doctrine provides evidence that nationalism has a greater role in politics. Document 4 (James Monroe, The Monroe Doctrine) The Monroe Doctrine helps because Monroe’s policy centered on nationalism and therefore this doctrine is influenced by it because it states that America is its own country and that it should be recognized as a nation. This chart provides evidence for sectionalism being apparent. Document 5 (Population of Enslaved African Americans) The chart shows the massive increase of slavery in the South and its contrast in the North. This map provides evidence for sectionalism in economics. Document 7 (Agriculture, Mining, and Manufacturing Before the Civil War) It shows the difference in economics between the North, South, and West and provides clear evidence for sectionalism. This map subtly shows a sense of nationalism. Document 8 (The Louisiana
Sectionalism was a leading contributor to America’s inability to reach compromise. The North and South possessed passionate political views that differed immensely. Both the Northern and Southern states felt unheard and unconsidered. The reannexation of Texas proved to be pivotal in how close America came to going to fill out war then. Northerners were willing to take Texas as she was, sought not to change the character of her institutions and realized that slavery existed in Texas.
After the colonization of America took place, sectionalism emerged between the now industrialized North and the agrarian South. Throughout the existing sections in the North and South, different perspectives about social, cultural, and economic issues such as slavery, rights, and tariffs arose, proving to be the foundation for the American Civil War. The economy called for a strong sense of unity and support within the regions due to the need for modern transportation in importing and exporting purchased goods for war. Led by President Davis, the Confederate economy of the South was unsuccessful in reaching its highest capability. Meanwhile President Abraham Lincoln led the Union States of the North to a prosperous industrial economy.
For Northerners, empathy was easier to practice. As the notion of emancipation became more widely discussed by politicians during the abolitionist movement tensions between the North and the South rose. The idea that the nation could eradicate the lifeblood of the southern plantations was deemed unacceptable and the southern states felt helpless. The South fought for state’s rights which is synonymous with slavery as that was the most important right they were fighting for, and the North fought to keep the South from seceding, largely due to South’s interest in maintaining slavery as
-Sectionalism lead to the Civil War because many states wanted to expand slavery and then that caused the Civil War. -Nationalism is a political feeling or belief for your reign. -Citizens/patriots show nationalism by having a feeling for their country for example the in the Olympics each country and the citizens support their country in the events that people in their country are competing
During the antebellum period of the United States, the era of Good Feelings brought about a heightened sense of nationalism caused by the victories in the War of 1812. In addition, the Erie Canal, finished in 1825, led to an increase in domestic trade and a more efficient means of transportation. These movements created a stronger country with an economy that could support itself financially. These new ideas also expanded domestic trade and transportation movements. Socially, the growing nationalism and the expansion of the country kept the states content; however, the Missouri Compromise in 1820 re-surfaced the continuing issue of slavery, and how the governing body should deal with it, creating sectionalism within the states.
Faith Pasmore JWags PAPUSH 31 March 2023 Sectionalism and the Civil War In modern times, arguments encountered revolve around controversial topics, political opinions, and personal issues. However, most conflicts encountered on the daily are small, easily resolved quarrels between family, friends, and neighbors. In the past, these conflicts have not always been so low-key. During the Civil War, it was brother against brother and neighbor against neighbor. People were so divided on issues like slavery, their diverse needs, and especially leaders for the country to the point where sectionalism swallowed the entire country and transformed it into two.
Nativism provided a means of preserving a sense of national identity at a time when social harmony and even the union itself were threatened by an apparent failure of democracy to meet the challenge of social and economic change. I also agree with what you said about John Calhoun 's argument in
When Congress issued tariffs on foreign goods, Southerners believed that Congress favored the North since this tariff would benefit them. John Randolph spoke of this issue, arguing that Congress was being unfair since the South was not benefiting from the actions of Congress at all while the North benefited (Doc A). As for political conflict, there was a clear case of factionalism and political rivalry in 1824 (Doc I). With these conflicts amongst the varying factions and political parties, the political tension and sectionalism within America continued to grow. Accusations and anger from the South further separated them from the North, which did not contribute “good feelings” to the country at
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the rise of the Republican party, Southerners feared the tipping of the balance of political power against them; their need for self-determination parallel the colonists’ belief of rebelling against the oppressive government of Great Britain. However, the Civil War represented something more: the clash of the feudalistic, agrarian South with the industrialized, capitalistic North. These two powers differed socially, politically, and economically, and were especially conflicted over slavery. These two sections of the United States were divided against one another, and could not survive this way. Therefore, it is more accurate to state that though the Civil War resembled some aspects of the American Revolution, it was a clash between two forces who could not exist with one another in their current state, leading inevitably to conflict between the
During 1800-1850 the united states experienced a period of sectionalism. Sectionalism The United states were divided into the northeast, south and the west. There were many different reasons for this division of the states. In my paper I will point out a few points from each section that caused the period of sectionalism. I will first start off by talking about the North.
loyalty to your state or lifestyle rather than to the whole country. The north was against sectionalism and the south liked it. The North wanted the government to rule laws for the whole country and south wanted to have each state choose their own laws individually. south also wanted to return any runaway slaves. (Mrs. Wise) "the Fugitive
Constitutionally the North preferred a loose understanding of the United States Constitution, and they sought to grant the federal government amplified powers. The South desired to reserve all vague powers to the separate states themselves. The South trusted upon slave labor on behalf of their economic wellbeing, and the economy for the North was not
In American History we are currently studying the concept of sectionalism. Sectionalism is division within a country based on regional beliefs and interest. In the early to 1800’s, sectionalism in AMerica grew as slavery divided the Nation. Slavery was ignored, compromised, and argued about by the states until the conflict drove our country into the Civil War. Although regional differences are not as distinct these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country.
Discriminating as it was, it did help create some form of cognition among American citizens, creating new meanings for the American nationalism. Based on the effects of the racial relations and nationalism, it can be easily summarized that the nationalism attained more actual effects than slavery and racial relations. Thus, a conclusion can be made that the nationalism is more likely to be the key element of this inevitable war, rather than slavery. Based on the arguments that the war took place due to nationalism rather than slavery and its reasons for the shattered cultural cognition among different communities, the ideas from leaders as well as the analysis on the outcomes of the war, a comprehensive conclusion can be made that the civil war was inevitable in the area of nationalism, because it is the core of the civil war, while the slavery abolition is more likely to be a hook and catalyst of the war rather than the essential
