The dehumanization that Sethe experienced took away her most desired identity: being a mother. Sethe experienced dehumanization when “those boys came in there and took milk”. Her milk, the substance that would sustain her child’s life, was the one thing that truly belonged to her, but the white boys took it from her, hence diminishing her worth as a woman, a mother, and a human being. Breast milk is the life force for an infant and having this integral human connection taken away from her diminished her self worth. This emotionally scarred Sethe, as she talks more about her milk being taken than the actual scars on her back (19). Despite this, Sethe still worked to be the mother that she never had. In the essay “The Common Elements of Oppression” from Suzanne Pharr’s book Homophobia: A Weapon of Sexism we learn about the different types of oppression. While watching the film Milk (2008) many of those elements of oppression are being strongly depicted. Throughout this piece examples will be given on how the film depicts three of those elements as described in Pharr’s book. The three elements of oppression that were the strongest in the film are: a defined norm, stereotyping and isolation.
In the 1980’s black women are faced with a lot pressure in society, Because women of color are both women and racial minorities, they face more pressure in which lower economic opportunities due to their race and their gender. This pressure is reflected both in the jobs available to them and in their lower pay. Also because they are women of color they are likely to be the giver of the house and also within the families. Beyonce’s 2016 visual album, Lemonade, carries her audience through different emotional chapters of her life, presumably following the infidelity of her husband, Jay Z. Although Lemonade touches upon sensitive racial issues and the oppression of African-Americans, I decided to focus more on the sentimental aspect of the film. It is a consensus that women of all kinds are stereotyped as ‘frail’ or ‘hysterical,’ especially when their emotions are transparent, but why is it that the black woman is perceived as ‘angry’ when she does so? Beyonce’s third track on Lemonade, “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” features an excerpt of a speech given by Malcolm X that reads: “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman.” To dismiss and undermine the emotional traumas Beyonce discloses in Lemonade confirms the veracity of Malcolm X’s statement.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
Divided Theme: Remaining neutral is siding with the oppressor not the oppressed The icy winter wind tousled my tightly coiled curls as I sat on the tattered and unsheltered train platform; the only platform I was not deemed a threat. The women hold their heads low, the men hold theirs even lower, afraid to make any movement that the people situated on the platform across the train tracks may perceive as offensive. I stare in contempt, but I wouldn’t dare cross the train tracks to reach the sheltered platform for the privileged. My thick brown curls, as wild as the wind and my coloured skin are not permitted in the same vicinity as those people; white people.
In addition to that, the black community isolated Sethe because she did something that the community considered wrong. Black feminism will be the approach utilized here to see the oppression of woman of color because it includes sexism, classism and racism. Since the female characters are very dominant in the novel, a black feminist approach should be very effective and it enables one to see how the female characters deal with the past and live with it in the present, what motherhood mean to the female characters, and how much the past influences the female characters who lives in the present. The end of the novel reveals the forgiveness and the acceptance not only of the black community toward Sethe’s choice (killing her daughter) but also of the white people (the Bodwins) who accepted Denver to work for them. This reconciliation shows that the courage and the will to get rid off from the past to live side by side peacefully and to move toward the future together.
