AP Short Form Name________________________ AP English (Language and Composition) Date______________ TITLE: The Great Gatsby AUTHOR AND DATE OF PUBLICATION: F. Scott Fitzgerald/April, 1925 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TITLE The story revolves around Jay Gatsby and his extraordinary life. Gatsby's lifestyle involves his great amount of wealth, an enormous mansion, and the hosting of parties that can only be dreamt of. All of Gatsby's qualities can be described as being purely "great", thus making him the Great Gatsby. MAIN CHARACTERS (a clear, concise description of each) Nick Carraway: The narrator of the novel, Nick Carraway was born in Minnesota and grew up to attend Yale and later fought in World War 1. Carraway moves to New York City to
The crowded bar was noisy, smoky and in no way what Tom had in mind when he had suggested to Booker that they were in a slump and needed to set time aside for a weekly date night. When he had made the proposal, he had expected quiet nights in listening to music or dinners at fancy restaurants, but so far, they had experienced the unsavory environment of a pool hall and a night out at a Monster Truck exhibition. To say he was unimpressed would have been an understatement; his lover’s apparent lack of thoughtful and suitable suggestions for the perfect date had him feeling downright pissed off. It appeared Booker was not only adept at getting his own way; he also did not have a single romantic bone in his body.
Thematic Thinker – Day 3 Theme A theme present in these two chapters is “Living far away from a loved one can distance your relationship.” Ming and Fitzgerald were very close and met each other often but ever since Ming moved their relationship isn’t what it used to be. They are no longer able to meet each other and they are only able to talk on the phone which isn’t enough to keep their relationship going. Three Passages “Both she and Fitzgerald were there on Mondays and Tuesdays, but on Wednesdays neither of them went to the hospital.
One event that is surprising to me personally in the book was when arthur gave nate his 1st place prize which was a skateboard that nate really wanted. Why this is surprising to me is because nate hated him because he entered in his troop and stole his 1st place spot and took his spot in his troop with his friends teddy and francis which they let him in the troop and nate did not agree to the decision of letting him in [Arthur] On pg.43 and on pg.85 it states, teddy says this is nate's best friend¨He really wants to win that skateboard¨. Then nate says ¨no that's my skateboard not his¨.On page 85 it also states , Nate sad this¨Arthur made me some brownies that's so obnoxious and on page 73 nate says¨how much I hate arthur he's so irritating
Chapter 1 Lorde- Team We live in cities you'll never see on screen Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams And you know, we're on each other's team
Michael McCarter, Todd Stevenson and an unknown Pi Tau brother stepped forward, the latter holding a video camera. Stevenson spoke first, his voice pleasant and inviting. “Welcome to the final day of Hell Week, gentlemen. You are one task away from becoming members of the most elite fraternity on campus. Congratulations on making it this far.”
Chapter one There were many important parts about chapter one. I think that the green light drove the plot the most though. It also had a connection with Gatsby's desire and symbolized it. In the beginning of the book Nick began describing himself.
1. “Ships at a distance have man’s wish on board.” (Hurston 1). The very first sentence of the novel reminds most about the novel the Great Gatsby, the quote is saying that men have dreams that are achieved, wanted, or never achieved.
My favorite part of the book was this passage right here. To me this was the only relationship that mattered. Actually it was pretty much the only relationship that wasn’t fake. Every other one was broken easily or just were false. Example being both daisy and toms affairs and how their feelings had dropped and left both affairs.
Mislaid Limbs Time is timeless, like a broken clock growling menacingly. As the hours passed, the future receded. Daisy was rested lifelessly, feeling disorientated like a broken doll. Unable to disconnect from the torturous flashbacks encountered when her eyes were closed. Each night, the battle between Daisy’s past and present began, sparking a perplexed disarray of her future, always leaving her with a sick sensation.
The passages I chose in this Novel is what I deem to be important to the climax of this Novel. From the passages that I chose it would seem that since the group decided to travel to Spain that's when things began to happen. Before Spain, when they were staying in Paris, they would all go out as a group of friends, drinking, partying, dancing, and just having a good time together. But now that they're in Spain it seems like things are starting to heat up and i’m not just talking about the weather.
• The succeeding report made me contemplate on "You" being a dime novel. " You are additional that your very existence is dim and undecided and you murmur your first word to me -- hello --when most individuals would just permit by but not you."
1. “I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father said snobbishly, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth.’ Ch.1 Analysis: nick is tying to say that Money isn’t always what people are born into; especially in this time people who are born into money are considered the upper class and above all. Some people are just a better person in general even without being born into a rich family he doesn’t know if a person has to be born into wealth to have natural class or just be classy on their own.
Diary 1 Nick Carraway distinguishes himself as both the creator and the storyteller. He calls himself a man of liberality and a man of incredible ethics. He battled in war, and now fills in as a bondsman on Long Island. He joins his cousin, Daisy, and her better half, Tom, for supper one night where they examined current occasions, and also methods of insight. In the wake of returning home, Scratch sees Gatsby, his neighbor, yet chooses to abandon him be.
Nick and Gatsby are outside the Buchanan’s’ house. Nick looks through a window and sees Daisy and Tom having a conversation at the kitchen table with a plate of cold fried chicken and two bottles of ale between them. "They weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched the chicken or the ale—and yet they weren’t unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together." Nick is wondering what they could be talking about.
"The Great Gatsby" is an outstanding piece of classic American literature. F. Scott Fitzgerald discusses the issues on-post-war society, the American dream, love, and wealth. This draws attention to the readers that question if Jay Gatsby is "Great". Despite the uselessness of his beginnings, Gatsby is great due to the intensity of his will. Although, Gatsby is a person whose false love, materialism, and egotism led him to the tragic end.
