Depression wears many different faces and can be seen in many ages and is most often misunderstood. It is one thing to feel depressed, it is another to suffer from depression. Admitting one is depressed is hard to do, but left untreated can lead to other major medical issues. “Depression is a hidden illness,” says Jeremy Coplan, MD, professor of psychiatry at SUNY Downstate in New York. At times some people can appear happy and joyful, but inside they’re struggling with the symptoms of depression. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines depression as,” a state of being depressed, dejection” and “a mood disorder.” Being depressed is a real illness. Many women experience depression from childbirth. Perinatal depression is more serious than the “baby blues.” Perinatal depression can lead to severe depression, peripartum depression. Peripartum depression is very extreme sadness with anxiety and complete exhaustion, making the daily activities of carrying for themselves and their babies very hard. The APA estimates that 1 in 7 women experiences peripartum depression. Psychotic depression happens when a person has severe depression associated with a form of psychosis. They experience having false beliefs (delusions) or hearing things that others do not hear (hallucinations). People with psychosis often experience deeper depressive feelings such as guilt, poverty, or illness. Seasonal affective disorder is usually experienced during the winter months, a period of reduced natural sunlight. They often experience social withdrawn, sleep a lot, and gain weight. People who suffer from tend to experience it year after year as the seasons change. Bipolar disorder is another form of depression.
