The Electoral College is a group of electors representing the states of the United stated who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. The Electoral College process consists of the selection of the electors, the meeting of the electors where they vote for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral votes by Congress. The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President. The presidential election is held every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The meeting of the electors takes place on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December after the presidential election. Those are the disadvantages of the electoral vote but the primary disadvantage is inequalities among different states. The electoral college gives states the right to determine how electors are apportioned. The system allows each of the states the freedom to design its own laws in regards to voting and offers each the ability to effect change. Many consider the Electoral College’s negative effect on third parties to be a good thing. Maintaining that our current two party systems provides the country with stability. Electoral College has been in United States for a long period of time. The system was formed to select a president through an indirect election and to avoid suspicion of corruption and belief of compromised votes, but the Electoral College never worked as it was intended to work by founding fathers. The Electoral College was first developed with the constitution to serve as a compromise, because people thought Congress should elect the president while others thought the popular vote should have the decision. Each state has a minimum of three electors which is constructed of two senators and a representative. The more representatives a state has, the more electors granted. Although the popular votes do not determine the elector votes, it almost always happens where the electors vote for whom the popular votes resulted in.

That is why the Electoral College is so significant. The Electoral College was created to elect the president with the influence of the people but also the legitimacy of the people in office. With the definition provided and the role the electoral college plays in the presidential election, it does not correlate with the rule of democracy.
