Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero’s Journey, appears in the foundation of modern hero tales, such as drama, storytelling, myth, and religious rituals. The first step in The Hero’s Journey is the Departure phase, it’s where the hero has an unusual birth or early childhood and is forced to leave their everyday life to face the challenges that await them. Next, is the initiation phase, it’s where the real challenges and trials occur. The hero has a mentor or guide who gives them a special weapon or advice so that when the hero faces the darkest part, the temptation to give up or quit, they will transform and achieve their goal. Lastly, the return phase is when the hero returns home and is able to recognize the experiences the hero had in the other world.

When the fleet left, it took a little over one month to leave spain, and actually set out to go to America. When they got there, they realized how hard it was going to be to survive, as the Indians started attacking. Eventually, they built a wall around their little settlement so that the indians couldn’t attack them. John Smith became the leader of the colony, and took a big gamble. He invited the Indians to trade with them.

"God gave up on the Earth long ago," the priest proclaimed to Betzabeth as they sat next to each other in a pew. News reports had confirmed the reptilian invaders had landed that frigid Christmas morning with the intent to stay; they no longer wanted to negotiate, instead they declared war. Although the swelling had gone down and her vision was no longer blurry, the excruciating pain she felt in her ribs was a reminder of the fisticuffs from earlier. Escaping her apartment building had been an agonizing, bloody and chaotic journey.

The concept of the hero’s journey is significantly cliché. It seems that each hero story starts and ends exactly the same way in today’s pop culture. In Linda Seger’s “Creating the Myth,” she gives insight on what makes a hero, how this specific type of hero creates a myth, and the significance the hero has on the story. In Robert Ray’s “The Thematic Paradigm,” he defines two types of heroes in American pop culture: the official hero and the outlaw hero. These two types of heroes are different in their personalities and beliefs, with the official hero being family oriented and the outlaw hero being more individualistic.
Hero's Journey “The Hero's Journey,” a template discovered and created by Joseph Campbell, is present in almost every story or novel. Every hero starts with a status quo, or a “normal life,” until they are called to adventure. They are then tested, and go through what Campbell calls a special world, where they face trials and the ultimate crisis. The hero returns victorious and changed to their new life. Both The Screaming Staircase and Beauty and the Beast have most (if not all) elements of this template, although both have different variations of some elements.
