Gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions, and up to 90 percent in others, according to the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment. Perhaps one of the most notorious street gangs in the western hemisphere is The Mara Salvatrucha also known as MS 13. “Mara” is Salvadorian for “Group”, although there is debate over the origin and meaning, it is commonly known to mean “street smart. MS 13 was formed on the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980’s by immigrants. “Mara Salvatrucha Stoners” is what MS 13 was originally called, they emphasized on partying, friendship and protecting one another from other gangs in L.A. This initial motto was later influenced by violence that grew on the streets of L.A, which affected community, crimes, and the youth. …show more content…

The formation of the 18th street gang was created under a unique situation. This gang originated during the 1960s from Los Angeles, California. It was founded by a young group of men from the same neighborhood. It initially was established by the young group of men as a result from being rejected by a local gang (Howell and Moore, 14). Unlike most gangs in the local area, this particular group did not discriminate or reject any members based on their racial backgrounds.
Mara Salvatrucha is a criminal gang organized in the United States. It is also known as MS-13. Mara Salvatrucha may took its name from "Salvadoran." That name may be also taken from a combination of the words "Salvadoran" and "trucha. " Most of founding members are from El Salvador.
Mara Salvatrucha, better known as MS-13 is a very dangerous gang. "There are MS-13 members in at least 42 states ... the gang has strongholds in the U.S., Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, as well as a significant presence in Spain, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries" (Logan). The Mara Salvatrucha is a powerful and well known gang that has been around for centuries. “The main reason they are known to be the deadliest gang around is because their motto is to control, rape, and kill” (Mara Salvatrucha).
How well Wes Moore describes the culture of the streets, and particularly disenfranchised adolescents that resort to violence, is extraordinary considering the unbiased perspective Moore gives. Amid Moore’s book one primary theme is street culture. Particularly Moore describes the street culture in two cities, which are Baltimore and the Bronx. In Baltimore city the climate and atmosphere, of high dropout rates, high unemployment and poor public infrastructure creates a perfect trifecta for gang violence to occur. Due to what was stated above, lower income adolescent residents in Baltimore are forced to resort to crime and drugs as a scapegoat of their missed opportunities.
There has been a misconception towards gangs in America. When one thinks of a gang, possible characteristics that would come to mind are that they root in poor neighborhoods, that their members are all ethnic minorities, and possibly that they are composed of all males. But in this case we have a gang that is not composed of ethnic minorities and was not born in a poor neighborhood. According to Brian William Ludeke This gang is known as the “Malibu Locals Only” or the “MLO” gang, which is a group that resides within the lovely neighborhood of Malibu, California and it is composed of Caucasian males (Ludeke). According to Ludeke writer of the article Malibu Locals Only: "Boys Will Be Boys", Or Dangerous Street Gang?
There are many different types of gangs all around the world. I 've found out that they have street gangs, prison gangs, car clubs, and also biker gangs too. In Northern California Hispanic gangs graffiti is distinct in the fact they are known to tag the number “14” which in the alphabet is the letter “N” for norteno or northerner. These gangs fall under the geographic area opposite of that of Surrenos which is the area just north of Bakersfield up to the state border of Oregon. The nortenos also pledge allegiance to a prison gang but not the Mexican Mafia. The nortenos pledge allegiance to their own prison gang called “Nuestra Familia” or in English “Our Family”. Similar to southern gangs they pledge allegiance by following order from within the prison by the Nuestra Familia shot callers and paying “taxes” from their drug sales.
The members of this gang are entirely of Mexican-American decent, and it is practically male dominated, with few female members passing along vital information to other members and smuggling contraband into the gang’s prisoners. By operating on a hierarchical system, gang members are aware of who is in charge and where other members rank in the community, much like the United States military layout. The social relations throughout the group and members’ interaction with the public and those outside of the gang is vital in ensuring the group is able to function smoothly, without drawing too much unwanted attention. Despite the obvious challenges that gang members face, La Nuestra Familia has expanded and pushed the boundaries of the prison community as a whole. Without establishing their own social and cultural norms, La Nuestra Familia would not have been so successful at recruiting and maintaining membership in what they may consider to be their very own, exclusive
“Society thinks we are monsters.” Mr. Antunez said at the beginning of the article Shuttling Between Nations, Latino Gangs Confound the Law. The following paper is going to take a close look at several aspects of Latino gangs and their effects on culture. The taboos and deviant acts that are committed by both groups. Actions the dominant culture has done to enforce the rules of society and, more closely, ways that the dominant culture has been deviant.
Ukraine 's main goal is to create safe streets for the citizens in the region. Throughout the region Ukraine 's government have responded to the real and perceived threat of gangs by sponsoring a “Mano Dura,” or iron fist, approach. They have rounded up thousands of youth based on their appearance, associations, or address. Most of these arrests did not hold up in Salvadoran courts but served to further condemn communities and may have accelerated recruitment for the gangs themselves. Far more troubling, from a criminology standpoint was the effect that Mano Dura had on the prison system, the mara leadership, and its operational structures.
The so-called “holiday” on April 20 marks National Marijuana Day, where cannabis lovers all over the world smoke pot especially on this day to channel their inner counterculture pride. It is an unofficial holiday simply in celebration of smoking some marijuana and enjoying life. Yet, it has been solidly distinguished as a celebratory occasion in cannabis subculture. But what does Denton, Texas do on 4/20?
During his time studying these boys, he found that most cases of conflict were resolved without the use of weapon(s), but rather with “harsh conversation”. This observation highly contradicts the typical view of gang members who are commonly stereotyped by their local community and justice system in Oakland. Rios describes how the boys “Conversations often involved references to guns as analogies for resolving conflict and demonstrating manhood”. The fact that most conflicts are dealt with in non-violent ways, highlights the negative role
Early on, MS-13 was a loosely organized collection of smaller gangs that focused on extorting local businessmen and small-scale drug trafficking operations. Unfortunately for law enforcement, MS-13’s operations have expanded past extortion, homicide and drug trafficking. Sonja Wolf finds that, MS-13 engages in robbery, auto theft, rapes, kidnappings, and the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation,” and that, “Over time, gang members have been increasingly implicated in robberies, the illegal possession or carrying of firearms, drug sales, rapes, and especially extortions and homicides. Gang youth have moved from levying minor taxes in their territories to running extensive extortion rackets. Shopkeepers, sex workers, students and teachers, taxi and bus companies must all comply with the requests, though the transport sector is most heavily affected.
Both MS-13 and 18th Street gang were born in the streets of Los Angeles, California in the 1980s. Salvadoran gang members also known as MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) and Mexican gang members also known as 18th Street (Barrio 18, Mara 18) a subdivision of the Clanton 14 gang which is the oldest Hispanic gang in California. The word "mara" is derived from the marabuntas ants in allusion to how to operate the organization the same way the ant expanded and destroyed everything to find the path. They share the ambition to rapidly expand their organization to other states of the U.S., also in El Salvador, Honduras, Central America and Canada. One similarity is a large percentage of their members are not US citizens that lead to deportation of high numbers of them.
Most gangs are made up of young males that are of a similar background and have a desire of acquiring
