Before the Reformation, women not seen or viewed as equals to men in any way. Men believed that a woman's role is to bear children and be something like a housewife, taking care of the children and the house. They were not to hold any major responsibilities because society believed that it is not a women’s place and that they would not be able to handle it since they thought that women have limits. During the Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, society’s attitude toward women changed. The society started to view women as equals in religion and education, but apart of society still believed in the subordination of women, which caused some things not to change.

In Document 4 a woman talks about how she wants to restore the original Calvinism and how they only follow scripture. This woman most likely decided to follow Calvin and be a Calvinist because she learned about it and educated herself about why Calvinism should be followed. After deciding to become a Calvinist she decides to try to educate other people and persuade them to convert to Calvinism as seen in this document. In this document the author, Jeanne d’ Albert, is addressing what she wants to say to the pope, but it can be said that her intended audience could have been the members of the church. She might have wanted to show the people that they should follow scripture and not the pope’s words. In Document 7 it shows a picture that has both a man and a woman teaching side by side to the children. This shows that women are as smart as men and are capable of teaching a class since the belief of men being smarter than women is gone. Being able to participate in religious matters and educate others show how society changed their view on women from before women being inferior and during the sixteenth and seventeenth century being almost equals in those fields. In the United States women were able to get equal rights, the same as men, by having their law go through the congress and senate. The women’s right organization had to try for over forty years to get their law passed, which in the end was called the Equal Rights Amendment. This shows that for women in Europe and the United States it was not easy for them to get the same rights as men. It took time and effort for them to get the rights they deserve. During the Reformation in sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe society’s view on women changed by women becoming seen as equals in religious and educational
During to the 18th century, women were taught they had a very specific place in a patriarchal society, and from an early age were taught how to achieve this place. Women were taught they needed to embody piety, purity, submissiveness and domesticity according to Barbara Welter in her paper, “The Cult of True Womanhood: 1820-1860,” published in 1966. A woman was told if she embodied all of these traits she would be a “true woman”. In 1798, Charles Brockden Brown published Wieland: or, The Transformation: An American Tale.
When examining the status of lower class women, those that had to take the role of workers and producers, there is an interesting primary source one might encounter. That is the ‘Mary Paul Letters’. Those consist of a series of letters, written from 1845 to 1862, by a woman named Mary Paul to her father. Mary Paul was the third of four children, who left her home in Vermont in order to work. In 1845, she writes a letter to her father, asking for his consent for her to go to Lowell, and look for work.
World War II, in which the United States was involved from 1941 to 1945, was a welcome distraction from the widespread financial ruin of the Great Depression, despite the death and destruction that it caused. Many Americans, though initially reluctant to join the war for fear of becoming embroiled in an exclusively foreign conflict, became passionate supporters of the war effort after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. United through patriotism, millions of men and women of all races volunteered to serve in the military. Americans on the home front rallied around the war effort as well, contributing in a variety of ways, including taking jobs in defense industries, conserving food and resources, and recycling items for use in war production.
Before people can define scandalous women behaviors, they have to understand what was expected of American women. Women expectations were held at a higher standard than men. The women that defy the stereotypes for American women were seemed less valuable and punished by God for their behaviors. The main roles for women was to be religious, marry, take care of their children, and live by four virtues. The four virtues women were expected to live by were piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity.
The era consisting of Old English, epic poets, and Christianity was the era of Anglo-Saxon. During the Anglo-Saxon era, women played a variety of different roles in their society. The roles of women depended on the status they had in their community, the community being split into different classes “localhistories”. The majority responsibilities that women had to uphold was being a peace-weaver and having to complete household tasks. The women were considered submissive and having to play an active role in society.
American Victorianism presented and socially encouraged specific rules of etiquette as well as new ways of thinking. In several aspects of Victorianism perceptions of equality, the roles of men and women, separately as well as in correlation to one another have been explicitly defined. These changes within traditional American gender roles in the 1800’s have laid out the foundations to today’s positions of men and women in society. As previously mentioned, etiquette was strictly measured in the Victorian era by a plethora of roles.
And while she was a teacher she called for equal payment for both men and women. As men had "no more brains than women". She finally found out that women were the reason for that as they did not own any money. It was because at that time, husbands controlled everything that their wives had.
If they were given the same liberty, it would allow them to conceive positive ideas and thoughts that would benefit everybody. The thought that women should only be constrained to their domestic duties is degrading because for a person capable of the worship of God and the ability to ponder over religious ideas, they are not allowed to contemplate anything other than simple, menial tasks. She finishes by saying that the souls of women are equal to men even if they are not physically equal. However, just because men are physically superior does not mean that also translates to mental superiority. If anything, it shows that women were given the capacity of an intelligent mind to compensate this shortcoming.
There was no benefit for women during this period. Their role in society even regressed at this period in time. Some of the ways that women’s roles in society regressed are that they had no power, they were seen at property, they had little to no access to education or culture. A woman’s main role was to be a housewife and to have children. The first point of women having now power is that men had control over their women.
Introduction Women in the Middle ages were treated as the second class members within their social class. They were taught to be obedient to their husbands and were expected to run the household and raise children. Their role in the society, however, was much more complex, while some medieval women achieved a high level of equality with men. In the Middle Ages women had a secondary role, coming second after men.

Tasha Mullings Kellie Riddell Literature 310 March 25, 2018 Both man and woman have been presented with specific roles in which society determined the criteria and the qualifications. There have been certain responsibilities that were traditionally carried out by men only while others were carried out by women. Most of these responsibilities were separated by the monarchy of its domestic range. The same holds true during the Renaissance period as men and women played opposite roles in society.

An ambulance arrived at the entrance of Bellevue Hospital, and an emergency bed sprinted across the polished, hospital floor. The wheels screeched, but they rolled with no hesitation. A crowd of four assisted around the bed: a father, a mother who tightly gripped their son’s hand, and two nurses who assured the injured that everything will be fine. The atmosphere tensed as the parents waited outside of the emergency room, praying for the procedure to end successfully. Buzzzz!
