Sometimes, heroes are recognized through their actions displayed in pressing conditions. Even if a hero does not have a needed skill in the current situation, he can assess it and be able to demonstrate courage, meaning that besides being body-strong, a hero must be mind-strong. In the story The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins is the perfect example of a hero. He helps the band of dwarves trick the nefarious spiders, escape from the magical elves, and finally assign himself the responsibility to talk face-to-face with the dragon Smaug. Although Bilbo had never been on adventure or fought monsters, faced his dilemmas with sensible activity. A hero, like Bilbo Baggins, will show rationality and courage whether he intends to or not. …show more content…
Bilbo intends to display courage this time. Just image an inexperienced small hobbit going into the darkness of the mountain to confront a dragon that had wiped out a whole civilization. Nevertheless, Bilbo shows his courage by going ahead, and his rationality by skillfully talking with the dragon Smaug, as to not make him angry. On page 221, Bilbo, despite being frightened and not wanting to, went ahead to meet the dragon. He even decides carefully what he would say to the dragon during his talk. The author even writes that all of the dwarves consider Bilbo as their leader because of his greater courage. Some people might argue, however, that a hero like Bilbo will not show courage and rationality only when he intends to, like in the cave with Smaug. This is a good point, especially since most actions are made voluntarily, but it is incorrect. From the text, Bilbo acts instantly on impulse without thinking about going and helping save the dwarves from both the spiders and the elves. He displayed courage and quick-thinking without thinking about it. So, a person who is a hero will always display bravery whether he intends to, or even if he does not know that he is showing such
Finally, the bravest moment of Bilbo Baggins is when he gives the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elven King in order for his friends to accept the deal that was to be made. This is brave because he was risking getting abandoned by his friends in order to
From this experience Bilbo leanr that you can never underestimate the inteliigence, and the striotypes that say strength is everything are missleaading. Biblo Baggins was assined as the Burgler at the begining of his expidition, his job was to simply find any weakness of the dragon as everything had to have a weakness. Then as Bilbo was creaping out into Smaugs layer he was smelt by the 'sleeping smaug' soon smaug told biblo that the dwarfs were untrustworth and began thinking this was an easy meal. Since smaug underestimated Bibo it allowed him to swiftly escape with his life.
J.R.R Tolkien uses the Hero’s archetype to give details about the character of Bilbo Baggins by characterizing him during this stage. During this stage, Bilbo Baggins is described as a brave and bold hobbit. Page 157-173 of the book displays Bilbo’s brave actions while he follows the elvenking and rescues the dwarves. In this situation, we can see that Bilbo decided to take a chance and save the dwarves. When faced with a death situation, most hobbits would hide in fear.
A hero can be made in many ways. In “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins becomes a hero throughout the story. He travels through the zero to hero journey. He starts as a small town hermit who transforms himself into a life saver. Bilbo encounters many struggles on the adventure, but he gets himself through them as well as the eleven dwarves he is traveling with.
Bilbo Baggins was just an ordinary hobbit, who went on an extraordinary adventure. He travelled many miles, through dark forests and mountains; he battled goblins, spiders, trolls, and a dragon. Some people say that it was Bilbo’s destiny to do all of these things, but they would be wrong. It was Bilbo who made some hard choices. The book started off with a choice, whether or not Bilbo would go on the adventure, obviously he agreed to go.
Bilbo fails to steal a bag from a Troll’s pocket when he was told to observe the red light from the dwarves’ camp. (43) From this failure, the dwarves begin to doubt his usefulness as a burglar, causing him to lose faith in himself. As time progresses, Bilbo proves to the dwarves, especially Thorin, and himself of what he is capable of. He gains confidence with the defeat of each of his enemies.
For instance in chapter 8, when Bilbo uses his sword to free himself from the spider web, he feels differently about himself. This is an indication that he is growing in self awareness. After the encounter with the spiders he names his sword which many heroic people do, “I will give you a name, and I shall call you Sting” (Tolkien 170). When Bilbo figures out a plan for the escape of the dwarves to Esgaroth, in chapter 9, Gandalf has departed so Bilbo has tremendous responsibility as their fate is in his hands. He displays both bravery and intelligence for figuring out the escape and doing it without Gandalf.
As we get farther into this novel we see qualities of heroism and leadership surface in Bilbo. He rescues the dwarves from the spiders and wood elves in Mirkwood and leads them to treasure. He also discovers Smaug’s weak spot. Through all of this, Bilbo refuses to become arrogant. We see this quality when he moves back to Hobbiton.
At the beginning of the story, Bilbo seems very cowardly, but soon proves that he is indeed brave. Bilbo is very tied up in his very boring, monotonous life and he really does not want to go on the adventure that he is

To begin, Bilbo steals the Arkenstone from Smaug. When Bilbo goes back into Smaug's Lair he pockets the Arkenstone making excuses to himself for the theft. This shows a heroic behavior because one of the main goals of their journey was the Arkenstone and Bilbo goes down and gets all by himself. In addition to that another one of his heroic behaviors is when he found the Keyhole on the side of the mountain so they could enter Smaug's lair. While they were waiting Bilbo remembers the moon runes from Elrond and shouts out to the dwarves and suddenly a ray of the setting sun shines on the wall, which cracks to reveal a keyhole.
Along the way, they overcome many obstacles that threaten their lives and put their trust for one another to the test. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.

A bBildungsroman exemplifies the spiritual education and form of the main character within a novel. The Hobbit fits as a bBildungsroman because throughout his journey, Bilbo becomes strong-willed and well educated, as compared with his original character, a hobbit who feared adventure and knew little about the rest of Middle Earth. The Hobbit acts as both a quest story and a bBildungsroman as Bilbo
