The Hobbit’s Adventure
Going on an adventure can be really hard, but only Bilbo Baggins knows how hard it really can be. In the story The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who goes on a great adventure. He fights in many battles, verbal and physical, to fight for the greater good. Bilbo learned how to support his friends and how to be self reliant. The character changes from beginning to end, evolving into a heroic leader. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit and hobbits aren’t one for adventures, but he didn’t really have a choice. Bilbo, only went on this particular adventure because Gandalf, a magical wizard, put a message on Bilbo’s door to 13 dwarfs about a gathering at his home. Bilbo is very smart and quick witted. He shows his brains when he has a riddle-off with Gollum. Gollum is a small slimy creature that was “dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face” (79). This was a tough verbal battle, with high stakes. If Bilbo lost, he would be eaten alive by the monster hidden in the dark cave, and if he won Gollum had to show him the way out. This battle is probably the toughest yet, going back and forth until Bilbo muttered “What have I got in my pocket” (85)? This wasn’t even a riddle, but Gollum was stumped, he couldn 't find the words to meet the question, first he guessed hands and then a knife, but he was still wrong, his last guess he shrieked “String, or nothing” (86). He was still wrong, so because Bilbo had the ring in his pocket, he would get to live to see another day and another battle. Bilbo is very smart in this instance, but not as clever as when he verbally battles smaug, a greedy dragon with many treasures. Smaug is easily flattered, Bilbo figured it out and used it against him. When he was flattering him, Smaug turned onto his stomach and revealed a missing scale. This was one of his weaknesses, next to being easily flattered, that was used to kill him. Bilbo is a major hero in The Hobbit, he always does his best to help everyone even at his own risk. When the dwarfs got captured by the trolls, bilbo found a way to get them out alive. He put them all in barrels in the river to flow away safely, but he forgot to find a way for himself to escape. He always thinks in the best interest for everyone, not just his friends. Like when he gave the Arkenstone away to the people of Laketown to provide leverage for them over Thorin.
