The Hobbit’s Adventure
Going on an adventure can be really hard, but only Bilbo Baggins knows how hard it really can be. In the story The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who goes on a great adventure. He fights in many battles, verbal and physical, to fight for the greater good. Bilbo learned how to support his friends and how to be self reliant. The character changes from beginning to end, evolving into a heroic leader. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit and hobbits aren’t one for adventures, but he didn’t really have a choice. Bilbo, only went on this particular adventure because Gandalf, a magical wizard, put a message on Bilbo’s door to 13 dwarfs about a gathering at his home. When the arrived they were expecting a warm

Bilbo is very smart and quick witted. He shows his brains when he has a riddle-off with Gollum. Gollum is a small slimy creature that was “dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face” (79). This was a tough verbal battle, with high stakes. If Bilbo lost, he would be eaten alive by the monster hidden in the dark cave, and if he won Gollum had to show him the way out. This battle is probably the toughest yet, going back and forth until Bilbo muttered “What have I got in my pocket” (85)? This wasn’t even a riddle, but Gollum was stumped, he couldn 't find the words to meet the question, first he guessed hands and then a knife, but he was still wrong, his last guess he shrieked “String, or nothing” (86). He was still wrong, so because Bilbo had the ring in his pocket, he would get to live to see another day and another battle. Bilbo is very smart in this instance, but not as clever as when he verbally battles smaug, a greedy dragon with many treasures. Smaug is easily flattered, Bilbo figured it out and used it against him. When he was flattering him, Smaug turned onto his stomach and revealed a missing scale. This was one of his weaknesses, next to being easily flattered, that was used to kill him. Bilbo is a major hero in The Hobbit, he always does his best to help everyone even at his own risk. When the dwarfs got captured by the trolls, bilbo found a way to get them out alive. He put them all in barrels in the river to flow away safely, but he forgot to find a way for himself to escape. He always thinks in the best interest for everyone, not just his friends. Like when he gave the Arkenstone away to the people of Laketown to provide leverage for them over Thorin. If they had the stone, Thorin couldn 't keep all the treasure for
Bilbo Baggins finds another side of himself he is the one leading the group of dwarves. In chapter 8 Mr. Bilbo Baggins shows real bravery by been able to set himself and the dwarves free from the spiders. In chapter 9 Mr. Bilbo Baggins shows intelligence by been able to devise a plan to set the dwarves free from the wood elves prison. In chapter 12 it is Mr. Bilbo Baggins alone that goes into Smaug dragon’s lair and he is also able to find Smaug’s vulnerable spot. In chapter 16 Mr. Bilbo Baggins is willing to give up his share of the wealth to bring peace to the humans, dwarves, and
From this experience Bilbo leanr that you can never underestimate the inteliigence, and the striotypes that say strength is everything are missleaading. Bilbo also learnt and developed through his own experiences, one of those moments was in the misty mountain. Biblo Baggins was assined as the Burgler at the begining of his expidition, his job was to simply find any weakness of the dragon as everything had to have a weakness. Then as Bilbo was creaping out into Smaugs layer he was smelt by the 'sleeping smaug' soon smaug told biblo that the dwarfs were untrustworth and began thinking this was an easy meal. Since smaug underestimated Bibo it allowed him to swiftly escape with his life.
Bilbo's life has changed a lot after just one night. One day he was just doing the normal thing and staying at his home, the next day he was pickpocketing a giant, later he was walking on a rock giant in a deadly storm, then he gets into a underground place with an unknown creature. Bilbo has really done something with his old house life. First, Bilbo has never done anything compared to pickpocketing a giant. The dwarves saw a light then told bilbo to go check it out.
Even though this part of the hero’s journey was portrayed pretty similarly, there is still a bit of a difference. They both used their instincts, but Bilbo was influenced a bit by the dwarves. His Took side had shown while the dwarves were contemplating whether he was fit for the adventure or not. This made him want to prove himself to them. Instincts aren’t normally the cause of the call to adventure, but for some reason, these two very different novels are similar this way.
The Hobbit, a marvelous tale by the accomplished novelist J.R.R. Tolkien, closely follows the outline of the hero’s journey. Hero’s journey is the process where a protagonist in a story often completes in order to complete this quest. This is shown through three separate phases or acts called the departure, initiation, and the return with each act containing different stages of the plot. Because of it’s beautiful understanding of this process, The Hobbit is agreed to be one of the best examples of the hero’s journey use in modern day literature. Each step had an equal role to providing the prodigious anecdote’s importance to people across the world.
Instead of being scared, he was brave enough to find out that trolls were the meaning of the light. This means that Bilbo was brave enough to investigate the strange light, and if he didn’t, they could have been captured unexpectedly and eaten, even though
After Gollum, Bilbo came upon giant, deadly spiders, that captured him and the dwarves. In the novel, The Hobbit, spiders are described as “He could on see the things eyes, but could feel it's hairy legs….”(Tolkien 143). Bilbo defeated them with a new found confidence when he began teasing them and removing his ring that made him invisible. Furthermore, one of the biggest trials Bilbo found himself in was when he was with Smaug. Bilbo outsmarts Smaug by learning that “No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time to understand it.
In chapter five it states, “Straight over Gollum’s head he jumped, seven feet forward and three in the air...” This proves that Bilbo is beginning to become a protagonist role in the story because he could have cracked his skull on the
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
Bilbo Baggins The Hobbit revolves around Bilbo, the protagonist of the story. He is the main reason the dwarves succeeded their mission of getting their treasure back. During the last half of the story, Bilbo saves Thorin and Company multiple times and was how the group of fourteen got to the Lonely Mountain alive. Although he helped the dwarves, Bilbo played a major role in helping Bard receive his portion of the treasure.
Bilbo risks his own life to save the dwarves many times during the adventure, which in turn gains him the respect he deserves. This new respect that Bilbo has acquires gives him plenty of confidence in himself to get the job done, whatever it may be. This clearly shows that Bilbo's change from being ridiculed and doubted by the dwarves to being very highly respected is a dramatic one and deserves recognition. All Bilbo needed is a chance to prove the dwarves wrong, and that is what he gets when those same dwarves appear on his doorstep that sunny afternoon. Along with Bilbo Baggins becoming a braver and more respected hobbit, he also develops the most important change in the story; he changes from being incompetent to very resourceful.
Bilbo is confronted by Gollum in the goblin caves. Bilbo wielded a dagger which he “thrusted [it] infront of him” (Tolkien 34). Gollum lacked weapons giving Bilbo the greater advantage but because Bilbo sympathized with Gollum, he decided to spare Gollum’s life and negotiating peace with the enemy rather than engaging in violence. Rather than killing Gollum, Bilbo embraces the irregular heroic quality of empathy. Bilbo develops a sense of affinity for the dwarves and their quest after seeing their “fierce and jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves'' (Tolkien 8), which drives his aspirations to aid them rather than seeking glory for himself.
Bilbo, however, possessed none of those qualities, he was in fact, a Hobbit. A Little Hobbit living in a comfortable hole, in The Shire. Hobbits never went on adventures, it was not done. However, this hobbit did, and all it took was a party and a bit of prompting from a wize wizard. He had begun his journey as a regular Hobbit,
Along the way, they overcome many obstacles that threaten their lives and put their trust for one another to the test. Bilbo learns that there is more to him than he realizes and through hard work and dedication, he can accomplish almost anything. Overcoming these problems and learning more about himself helped Bilbo change from an ordinary, self-doubting hobbit into a clever, courage-filled, loyal hero. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.
The company faces many challenges while Gandalf aids them. Eventually, Bilbo becomes forced to take charge and lead the company to the mountain. The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
