Bilbo shows that he could be a hero in dire situations, where no-one else could help. In the middle of the journey, Gandalf leaves to attend other matters. So, Thorin becomes the “leader”. They go to Mirkwood and became lost easily. Thorin does not have any plans of getting out, and eventually gets captured by the wood elves. The dwarves gets lost in the woods and lose each other while getting captured by the spiders. Bilbo does not get captured, and looks for the dwarves. He says the dwarves from the spiders, and they keep on moving. The company gets captured again, but it is by the same wood elves who captured Thorin.Bilbo quickly puts on his ring and disappears. He follows them to their headquarters. There, Mr. Baggins came up with a plan

The dwarves discover something that they didn’t think would happen when they first started onto their adventure, they have relied on Bilbo more than once to get them out of a sticky situation. The dwarves, first heart broke when they hear that Gandalf was leaving them, didn’t think that Bilbo was a worthy burglar to bring onto the trip, believing that he had caused the trip to slow more than necessary. They then begin to realize and discover why Gandalf did leave them though, Gandalf knew that Bilbo would help the dwarves as the journey progressed and he gained more
They run Into the Goblins while making their way to the Dwarves kingdom. The Goblins cause havoc when they enter the mountains, they chase Bilbo and the Dwarves the group gets separated and that's how Bilbo initially meets Gollum. The great goblin is always chasing them he says in a song "Bones will be shattered, necks will be wrung! You'll be beaten and battered, from racks you'll be hung! You will die down here and never be found, down in the deep of Goblin Town!"
The author even writes that all of the dwarves consider Bilbo as their leader because of his greater courage. Some people might argue, however, that a hero like Bilbo will not show courage and rationality only when he intends to, like in the cave with Smaug. This is a good point, especially since most actions are made voluntarily, but it is incorrect. From the text, Bilbo acts instantly on impulse without thinking about going and helping save the dwarves from both the spiders and the elves. He displayed courage and quick-thinking without thinking about it.
From that point it seems that Bilbo is not going to follow the journey, but right after Bilbo is coerced into joining the adventure.
Although Bilbo was not captured, his friends the dwarves were. Without hesitation, Bilbo uses his sword to slay the spiders, and immediately sets out to find the dwarves. The old Bilbo probably would have run in fear. “Somehow the killing of the giant spiders, all alone by himself in the dark... made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person” (Tolkien 144).
Bilbo fails to steal a bag from a Troll’s pocket when he was told to observe the red light from the dwarves’ camp. (43) From this failure, the dwarves begin to doubt his usefulness as a burglar, causing him to lose faith in himself. As time progresses, Bilbo proves to the dwarves, especially Thorin, and himself of what he is capable of. He gains confidence with the defeat of each of his enemies.
Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and Winkler believe after the hero’s departure, they are faced with a trial or many trails to overcome when they finally meet their biggest enemy, “The hero undergoes a series of trials often on a perilous journey.” (Campbell) Bilbo’s first trial is after Bilbo escapes from Gollum which he is reunited with the dwarves and are surrounded by Wargs but after it seems all hope is lost, eagles swoop down and save the adventures before it is too late. In Mirkwood, the dwarves and Bilbo are starving when they get captured by spiders, and Bilbo has to save them, “Bilbo saw that the moment had come when he must do something. ”(Tolkien 64) Bilbo escapes by himself and then finds the dwarves trapped and defenseless against a mob of spiders which Bilbo has to defeat by calling them names, and angering them until Bilbo has unraveled the dwarves.
At the beginning of the story, Bilbo seems very cowardly, but soon proves that he is indeed brave. Bilbo is very tied up in his very boring, monotonous life and he really does not want to go on the adventure that he is
The “hero’s Journey” begins with a call to an ordinary individual to leave the ordinary world. This calls prompts the individual to leave the common life to venture into the realm of the unknown. The journey continues with the individual leaving the ordinary world to descend into the special world. The decent into the special world brings the individual through different adventures and experiences that reveal weakness and allow for strength and development to conquer those weaknesses. Bilbo baggins journey represents the “hero’s Journey”as he leaves the ordinary world as an ordinary hobbit,enters the special world as a developing warrior,and returns as an unexpected hero.

Everyone is different when they start practicing something new, something that is out of their comfort zone. Normally people do not like performing anything that involves them leaving their bubble; they just like to keep it simple. People do things that they like and what they are used to, not expected or indifferent things. One can pretty much expect what these people do because they do the same thing every day, there is no change in their life and they either do not like change or they do not like doing things that put them in a difficult position. The company faces many challenges while Gandalf aids them. Eventually, Bilbo becomes forced to take charge and lead the company to the mountain. The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
Bilbo follows and plans for escape. He rescues them all by placing them in barrels and barrel-rolling to safety. Reunited, they continue on their journey. They are now nearing their final boss, Smaug the dragon, in Lonely Mountain.
