The Death of The Dead The short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce takes place in “northern Alabama” during the Civil War. The protagonist of the story is Payton Farquhar, who is described as “a well-to-do planter, of an old and highly respected Alabama family”. Farquhar believed that “No service was too humble for him to perform in aid of the South…” and he had “…the character of a civilian who was at heart a soldier”. One evening while Farquhar and his wife were sitting “on a rustic bench near the entrance to his grounds, a gray-clad soldier rode up to the gate and asked for a drink of water”. Being the soldier at heart, Farquhar inquired about news from the front. The soldier told Farquhar the “Yanks” have reached …show more content…
The reader is informed that Farquhar is standing on a plank of wood, which is being held by the sergeant of the Federalist, and “At a signal from the former the latter would step aside, the plank would tilt and the condemned man go down between two ties”. Although the reader presumes the man, which is later revealed to be Farquhar, is dead Bierce still continues short story about Payton Farquhar’s grand escape from his death. Bierce states that “…he (Farquhar) knew that the rope had broken and he had fallen into the stream” eluding his death. Ironically Bierce also adds that “His neck ached horribly; his brain was on fire; his heart, which had been fluttering faintly” which are indications of strangulation and lack of oxygen according to “rightdiagnosis.com”. Another example of foreshadowing is at the very end of the short story. In the last scene Farquhar has made it to his plantation, and right before he hugs his wife with extended arms “…he feels a stunning blow upon the back of the neck; a blinding white light blazes all about him with a sound like the shock of a cannon--then all is darkness and silence”. The stunning blow to the back of his neck is implied to be Farquhar’s neck breaking, and the blinding white light refers to the cliché phrase of seeing the light before one’s death. Lastly, the darkness and silence are symbols of

“An occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce. The story is based on Peyton Farquhar, a plantation owner being prepared for execution by hanging from an Alabama bridge during the american civil war. Farquhar is a confederate supporter that learns that the union troops have taken over the owl creek railroad bridge. A union soldier in disguise told Farquhar to burn down the bridge, he of course falls for this for the soldiers trick because he doesn’t believe the war is fair. The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.
As in third part of the story, Farquhar seems to feel in arms of his wife. He struggles to escape the problem to meet his wife and children. Furthermore his wife also represents the importance of being hopeful and connection of our hopes and struggles with the persons to whom we give importance and very important for our life. Farquhar's Wife is a devoted woman who fills in as a symbol of the solace and household security Farquhar looks for. However Farquhar's wife likewise represents the area that Farquhar rejects in setting off on his reckless mission to injure the North's campaign.
When a federal spy disguised as a confederate soldier tricks Farquhar into risking his life to become the hero he had always dreamed of, Farquhar is put in his unfortunate situation. Farquhar inability to recognize the difference between a federal spy and a confederate soldier leads him to the decision that results in his untimely death. The story itself gives the readers a false sense of hope that Farquhar might actually escape his own death. Palmisano illustrates the author's deception when he writes"Bierce does not overtly inform the reader that Farquhar's escape is a hallucination but expects that the careful reader will realize the impossibility of events described in the final section of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". Bierce expresses his disdain for the deceptive tactics used during the civil war by causing the reader to feel remorse for Farquhar's death.
How do you cope with the reality of day to day life? I would like to think I handle the reality of day to day life moderately well like everyone else. However, I began to question myself once again as I read Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” This story, with its unexpected ending, had me rereading it several times to pull out key details that led me down the wrong path the first time.
In conclusion, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” demonstrates several foreshadowing techniques to predict Farquhar’s fate, such as imagery and preternatural plot elements. The preternatural ability to hear a watch ticking at a vociferous volume reveals that Farquhar was simply imagining that his time is ticking away. Also, the use of imagery when he is unnaturally describing the distant trees in great detail shows that he is dreaming about that as well and not living in reality, so he has not escaped the fact that he will die in real
The first instance is not hard to pick out, it’s an instance of hope to escape from the hangman’s noose. This is the simplest form of foreshadow, it was very cut and dry. The other instances in the story are harder to pick out. The second instance occurs when he is in the water trying to escape.
He knew that it had a circle of black where the rope had bruised it. His eyes felt congested; he could no longer close them. His tongue was swollen with thirst…” (Bierce 12). This too, like the last quote, helps foreshadow that Farquhar is still in the hemp.

Imagine knowing that you were going to be killed within the next few days. But you don’t know how. Paranoia. Schizophrenia. Maybe even insanity.

Meanwhile, the noose is around Farquhar neck and he starts to daydream about the possibility of noose breaking and falling into the creek. He then escapes the Union troops, and finds himself back home where his wife awaits him. As soon as he tries to embrace his wife he is forced back into reality by being hanged.
The Hunger Games story, Catching Fire, is connected to many themes and had lots of well thought-out characters, foreshadowing and symbols. One of the most important symbols in the story was the mocking jay. The Mocking Jay is used to show rebellion, survival and hope which are all major themes in Catching Fire. As well as being a symbol for rebellion, it also foreshadowed that District 13 may actually still be alive. After the war between the Districts and the Capitol, it was rumored that the Capitol destroyed district 13.
Farquhar was able to deviate away from the reality of his death through his vivid imagination. He escaped all the pain that he otherwise would have felt. Upon falling down the bridge, his defense mechanism kicked in and led him to imagine an escape he desired. He didn’t feel any pain for he quickly “lost consciousness and was as one already dead.” He was not in fear during his last moments because he believed that “despite his suffering … he now (stood) at the gate of his own home.”
