Rebellions Rebellion: an open, organized, and armed resistance to one’s government or ruler. And I’m not talking about just “rebelling” against your parents by staying out past curfew. Some rebellion involves a degree of defiance that requires violence and law breaking. But others are more silent such as the creation of newspapers. There were plenty of rebellions that shaped history from acts of disobedience, boycotts, newspapers, social movements, and violent uprisings. The three that I will be focusing on are Nat Turner’s Rebellion, Frederick Douglass, and the New York fire. Nat Turner’s Rebellion, 1831, began with his ‘Godly’ reputation that impressed his family and friends. Even in adolescence, he had an unusual amount of a sense of …show more content…
Nat Turner’s Rebellion happened in Virginia, Frederick Douglass started out in Maryland, and the fires happened in New York City. It matters where they happened because of the type of people it affected. Slave rebellions made more of an impact and a shock to more southern states where they wanted to keep slavery. Gender played a role in the methods of rebellion because every rebellion happened to be predominantly black males. The fires included some whites because they were found by the court to be the alleged “ring-leaders” but all were males across the board. In each rebellion different skills were utilized. In the Nat Turner Rebellion he believed, “by signs in the heavens that it would make known to me when I should commence the great work- and until the first sign appeared, I should conceal it from the knowledge of men- and on the appearance of the sign (the eclipse of the sun last February) I should arise and prepare myself, and slay me enemies with their own weapons” (Baker 110). His knowledge of religion and visions was his skill required to know ‘when’ to tell the other slaves and act upon them. For Frederick Douglass, his skill was that he could communicate to the masses through his newspapers and therefore led to his traveling around the United States and Britain where he lectured on civil rights and social justice issues after he successfully escaped slavery life. But neither of them, Nat nor Frederick, would’ve …show more content…
The differences between them happened because of all kinds of factors. Nat Turner and his followers happened to have a weapon and “a general destruction of property and search for money and ammunition always succeeded the murders,” (Baker 128). They happened upon the weapons and money. Frederick Douglass happened to succeed in his escape of the slavery life that Nat Turner and the slaves involved in the fires weren’t so lucky and were caught and prosecuted. Turner’s rebellion was a massacre that sent surrounding whites into panic even though he had no plan to do so, he was just told it was what he had to do. Similarly, Douglass knew he had to help others but was able to do so across the United States and Britain but Turner couldn’t spread his word any farther because he was caught and
Nat Turner has an unbelievable life story that portrays his exponential amount of courage and his willingness to fight for anything that he believed in. With his courage in mind, many other slave rebellions occurred after the massacre led by Nat Turner. Throughout his whole entire life, Nat Turner was looked upon as a leader, and using his influence, he had a huge impact on slavery. “He was said to have described events that occurred before he was born, leading several of his relatives to believe that he was a prophet.” (“Nat Turner”)
Shays’ Rebellion Essay Shays’ Rebellion was when a group of farmers protested against the government shortly after America gained its independence. Although these farmers rebelled against the government, nevertheless they stood up, aimed to help country, and their actions had lasting effects affecting the government. These protesters stood up against the government. It is important to realize that “ the people who have stepped up to demand rights for themselves and others are most likely to be put in jail.” These jails they were put in were often far away from their homes.
What makes him different is Nat Turner actually remembers a lot of what happen when he was born, so is actually fully aware that what is going on in the world of slavery. A lot
Nat Turners Rebellion became monumental for many people of color, he was idolized and respected for his courageous actions. The rebellion created fear that spread through the South, even those in favor for abolishment now wanted stricter laws for slaves. Turner was “recorded on the list of dishonor” for the organization he had lead (“An Address To The Slave Of The united Slaves”). There had been an interview by Thomas R. Gray, defending and slightly sympathizing with Turners actions, many rejected the validation of the interview and felt as if he just wanted “to trick, confuse, and overwhelm the slave’s minds.” (“The Southampton Tragedy”).
Shay’s Rebellion “What country before ever existed without a rebellion?” a quote from Jefferson in document C. Throughout the history of the United States many conflicts and protests have occurred. One of these was Shay’s rebellion and it was caused by the government not paying war veterans their money after fighting in the war. This made the protesters threaten the court that they are going to raid the armory and many people consider them rebels for this. Although many people thought the farmers or war veterans were rebels, nevertheless they are truly freedom fighters because they stood up for what was right, kept the government aware of needs, and were not treated fairly.
It was considered unlawful for a slave’s master to allow his or her’s slave to be given the opportunity to learn. Nat Turner was treated very well, and was even given the opportunity to practice his religion. He was very religious man, and often prayed and read the Bible on his

They started with the killing of his owners, the Travis family. For example,”Nat Turner (October 2, 1800 to November 11, 1831) was a slave who became a preacher and made history as the leader of one of the bloodiest slave revolts in America on August 21, 1831. ” When he was younger, Turner was thought to have a special talent because he could describe things that happened before he was born. His mother and grandmother affected his decisions and his choices for the revolt. According to the Nat Turner Biography it states that, “Over the years, Turner has emerged as a hero, a religious fanatic and a villain.

Nat Turner Rebellion Stacey Cofield Florida State College at Jacksonville Nat Turner Rebellion The primary source that I have chosen is Nat Turner Explains His Rebellion, 1831. More than fifty white men, women and children were led to their untimely demised at the hands of Nat Turner. Leading a revolt that was comprised of Black men, some freed and others enslaved, Turner felt his actions were an act of God.
Turner killed more than 60 whites including women and children during the rebellion. Nat Turner believed he was chosen by god, and Harriet believed in god but did not think she was chosen. On the other hand Nat had no siblings and his father is unknown while Harriet had eight and her father was Ben Ross. All in all, both Nat turner and Harriet Tubman besides them both being slaves had many differences and similarities that affected many people good and badly.
This led him to discover what many slaves went through and the hate people in the south had towards them.
Douglass for example emphasized the importance of education for slaves. Douglass is a first had observer of the strategy of slave owners to keep their slaves ignorant. By keeping slave uneducated they are unable to express the horrible things that happen to them to the world. Hugh Auld forces his wife to stop teaching Douglass to read (auld stopping teaching quote) , so Douglass teaches himself. For him learning to read was a major turning point in his quest for freedom and it enabled him to put out his book, which would inspire many to turn against slavery.
The American person has no true ideals, or beliefs that make him or her up. Americans are free to believe in what they want, think what they want, preach what they want, and most importantly say what they want . Authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman show in their texts such as “Self-Reliance” , The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass , and “I Celebrate Myself” that there is no true definition of the American identity. The American identity can be seen in the many aspects of peoples lives, and a a quality that many Americans portray is the ability to have individual thoughts and emotions as well as the capability to not conform to society because they stand up for their own individual rights. Was the French Revolution preventable? This is a question that is fascinating to think about. What could have been done differently to prevent this revolution that cost countless people their lives? Why were others willing to give their lives, for what cause? Why was life so turbulent?
