Christopher Columbus is well known as the person who discovered the Americas. We even have a holiday called “Columbus Day” to honor him. However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything. Christopher punished those who questioned him, forced rape upon the Natives and forced the Native Americans to move west. He left behind a legacy of slavery, greed and genocide. Didn’t discover anything due to people already living on the land, others have already discovered the land and he wasn’t the one who proved the Earth is round.
Discovery of the new world made everyone happy but they all looked past the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy that he would eventually leave behind and

While Columbus was the first European to sail to America he set a path that others will follow. One of these being slavery. While Columbus was killing the Natives he then forced labor upon them. “ The people of Haiti, where Columbus established a colony in 1493, were almost completely exterminated within one generation, due directly or indirectly to Columbus’ actions” ( Source 4). This caused suffering to the Africans and once they died out he brought in Natives to finish their work. Besides the Slavery Columbus set up a path for greed that other voyagers would follow. Others saw Columbus as a role model and so they followed in his footsteps to discover other lands. Just like Columbus they would do anything to find new land and once they did find some they would do anything to make it theirs. Most do not know that Columbus during his time in the America caused mass genocide on the Natives. The amount of death that Columbus caused has very few comparisons. By doing this other voyagers would eventually do the same to the Natives once they found the land of others as
Mentioned in an article from Britannica, “(Columbus) was obsessed with the ocean from a young age and began his sailing career in his teens,” leading him to become an expert navigator and ambitious explorer. In every part of his voyages, good or bad, Columbus introduced Europe to new land where they could expand and build new settlements. He encouraged many other explorers to sail west and introduced what is known today as The Columbian Exchange. This is where he began swapping and trading New World and Old World technologies, plants, cultures, and ideas. He brought together the Eastern and Western hemispheres of the world while also opening a new international economy and helping Europe colonize new lands.
As most know he is the the man that “discovered” America, but is he truly deserving of the honor of this title? When we were younger we were told that he “discovered America” but that is not true. We’re taught about his name, and the name of his ships. What we probably were not taught was the descriptive things Columbus himself wrote in his journal. We were told he met the “Indians” but we weren’t taught he killed more than he even met.
Columbus didn't really discover America since there were already millions of people already living there. In the article ¨Why We Should Abolish Columbus Day¨ it says, ¨ The American Heritage Dictionary defines ¨discover¨ as ¨to be the first to find, learn of, or observe.¨ How can anyone discover a place which tens of, millions already know about?¨ There were about millions of people there, living there, and Columbus gets the credit for ¨discovering¨ America. He was also credited for having illusions about finding Asia during his voyage. This was false because he already had some knowledge of ¨new lands¨ across Atlantic. He was also not the only one to believe that the Earth was flat, there were also other Europeans believed that as well.
For instance, upon arrival, he pushed their kindness aside and made them work against their will. Document 2 shows how the natives willingly traded everything they owned. In exchange, Columbus decided to subjugate them for his own benefit. Compared to his men, the Indians were no match for them.
While some praise Columbus for his discoveries, many are questioning if we have forgotten the importance of Native Americans and what part they played in the Christopher Columbus story. Author Jack Weatherford explains his view on Columbus Day and what we should be celebrating. In his source “Examining the Reputation of Christopher Columbus” he states “he [Columbus] was no more the discoverer of America than Pocahontas was the discoverer of Great Britain” Weatherford does not believe that Columbus had anything to do with that discovery of the “New World” nor does he need to be honored and celebrated for it. Weatherford acknowledges that Native Americans survived without the help of the white settlers, “Native Americans had built great civilizations with many millions of people long before Columbus wandered lost into the Caribbean.”
Although he did not find a water route to the Indies like he had intended, he found many valuable foods native to only the New World, and he found gold which became a high demand to search for among fellow explorers and conquistadors. His findings greatly increased his country’s economy, and later the New World offered a place for religious freedom from the Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican church for anyone who wanted to chose a different denomination of Christianity. Columbus also started the Columbian Exchange, which allowed the newly discovered goods from the New World to be transported and traded within and around Europe. While Christopher Columbus made many advancements towards the evolution of Europe and sea routes for trade, I still consider him a villain due to the many lives that he took, because I feel that he could have made these same advancements for Europe, but without as much bloodshed as he
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
According to Loewen, few textbooks explained how Columbus was involved in the slavery and the exploitation of Indians. Another error that we have learned in schools about Columbus is that he was the first person to “discover” America. However, this is an error because people from other continents had already reached America before 1492. In fact, we forget
Christopher Columbus is the most famous explorer because he discovered the americas and made friends with the native americans. And now in the united states we have a columbus day to celebrate him. But what if I said that everything you know about columbus was false. He did not discover the americas first, he treated the native americans extremely poorly and he added no additional knowledge. Columbus’ goal was to spread religion to the natives and make peace with them, but that did not go the way it was supposed to.
Christopher Columbus was the man credited with the discovery of the New World, even though the Native Americans and possibly the Vikings discovered it before him. He is celebrated as an American hero among many, but among some, he is a monster. Columbus was the man that tried to discover the westward route to the East Indies for the Spanish (14-1), and ultimately, he opened the Americas for colonial expansion to Europe. He is said to have enslaved many Native Americans, committing horrible atrocities to them. The question on the table is whether Columbus was a hero or villain.
Another reason is that he enslaved the native Americans and forced them to search for gold. If they did not meet their daily amount of gold their arms were cut off. The Requerimiento shows how Columbus blackmailed the native
Columbus would command his men to torture the Natives because “he punished minor offenses against his domination by cutting off the Natives’ noses and ears.” Columbus killed these Natives slowly so they would feel the crucial pain before they die, which is just horrible. Columbus really explore to terrorize others lives because he did not even achieve any of the goals he intended to
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
Christopher Columbus Hero or Villain ? Christopher Columbus is a Villain. On some accounts he can be a Hero. But on many other accounts he's a vicious Villain. Yes he discovered America ;
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
