According to Jefferson expansion was the key to america's health as his vision was that a republic depends on “an independent, virtuous citizenry for its survival”. One example of westward expansion was the Alamo. During the conflict at the Alamo, the Texans were attempting to gain independence from Mexico. Another example of Westward expansion was The Oregon Trail. Americans were naturally curious about the land west of them after receiving letters from the emigrants describing “really great land”. As a result, it became common knowledge among Americans that the people had a right to expand from “ sea To shining sea”. One example of progress toward westward expansion was the conflict at the Alamo. During the battle at the Alamo, the Texans …show more content…
The Louisiana purchase was a vital event leading to westward expansion. One cause of the Louisiana purchase was Thomas Jefferson couldn't buy the land directly from the French so he made a treaty saying that he could buy the land. This demonstrates the Louisiana Purchase being a right because it was a amendment in the constitution the Jefferson used. The French also were in the middle of a war with great Britain, which meant they needed money badly to supply food, pay the troops, and for more reasons. They needed money a lot more than territory on a different continent, however the constitution stated that he couldn't buy the land directly from other countries so he twisted the words of the constitution using an elastic clause. He then made a treaty with the French which was in the constitution but not in those words and the size of the United states tripled. However in this process he was worried about the french intentions so he sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to France to negotiate. This was the Americans right because if he thought that the French were going to try something he has the right to protect his country. Another cause of the Louisiana purchase was Thomas Jefferson knew that it was vital for the Americans so when he saw his opportunity to get a great …show more content…
Americans were naturally curious about the land west of them after receiving letters from the emigrants describing “really great land”. “To get free land in the heavenly country where sickness was hardly ever known” also “ The emigrants sent letters back home describing the great land. This is showing that the oregon trail was the Americans right because there was only emigrants there meaning that it was unclaimed, and that the land was great meaning that it had excellent farming, it was free.and there was hardly ever any sicknesses. Another reason that people moved west on the Oregon trail was because of the discovery of gold. “After the discovery of gold in California in 1848, more prospectors set out on the Oregon Trail”.This was the Americans right because they had the freedom of speech to say that they wanted to travel to these areas in search of gold. Another reason that people went west on the Oregon Trail was because it was occupied by Mountain men and the emigrants from their country. “The most remote area explored by mountain men in the 1820’s and 1830’s was the Oregon Country”. Showing that it was far away from most people and the only people that were there were Mountain men. The Oregon trail was significant to the American people expanding from “sea to shining
In United States history, there were many events that occurred during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. One of those events was the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase was when the president of the United States at the time, Thomas Jefferson, purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, who was ruled by Napolean Bonaparte. The Louisiana Purchase was important to the country’s history and growth for multiple reasons. The improvement of trading and the agrarian system along with the allowance of the Lewis & Clark Expedition are all examples of this.
-The Louisiana Purchase caused formation of new states, access to the Mississippi river system, increase in geographic and scientific knowledge, increased conflict with american indians, and it added more territory to the U.S. . Louisiana Purchase and Exploration The Constitution affected the Louisiana purchase because of the Purchase's constitutionality "Nowhere does the Constitution authorize the executive branch of the government to spend public funds to expand the boundaries of the nation. " This was a problem for Thomas Jefferson since he was after all elected by a "political philosophy that emphasized small government, low taxes, and "strict construction" of the Constitution"In conclusion by Jefferson's many ways technically the Louisiana purchase could
Western Expansion Between 1860 and 1890 America has got an impressive expansion history; in particular, the western expansion is considered a central theme in its history. The greatest influence or force that has shaped the American society and democracy was its free land which intensely affected the American society as put forth by Fredrick Turner. Economists pushed for the full utilization of the American soil which consequently resulted in more worth (Quay, 2002). New cities popped up, businesses developed, railway networks built, agricultural land improved and territories and states also expanded. The expansion occurred progressively, much of the expansion took place the periods 1860 to 1890.
America is known for its greatness. The drive of the American people and the desire to improve life. The Mexican War (1846 – 1848) was one driving factor towards Americas westward expansion. America endured major changes throughout the 19th century. Changes to include the continued population growth, changes to agricultural land and the development of states.
The United States is always in an ever changing state. This is especially true during the westward expansion that followed the Civil War and the ever expanding American Industrial Revolution. There are three major events that occurred in the late 19th century that set the precedence for the westward expansion of America. With American still in a new born state, there was many great accomplishments and many failures. I am going to breakdown the westward expansion during 1860-1890 after analyzing the Westward Expansion map from PBS Learning Media website, to assess how the westward expansion moved between the 1860’s and 1890’s (Westward Expansion, 1860-1890, n.d.).
Reuben Ackarie Professor King History 102 25 Feb 17. Railroad Westward Expansion from 1860 to 1890 The history of America is grounded in the concepts of immigration, expansion, and economic growth. When European settlers arrived along the East Coast, they developed a new doctrine called the manifest destiny that would guide their path (Manifest). The project to join the East and West Coast; which once could be considered as an impossible task, gradually gained steam (pardon the pun).
A. Describe American Westward expansion during the nineteenth century and analyze two key features of this process in relation to questions of American national identity. Introduction The history of the United States is a history of westward expansion. In the early 19th century, the United States purchased the rights to landmasses west of the inhabited East coast of America. This is known as the Louisiana Purchase, and was arguably the event that set of the century of exploration, settlements and war, known as the Westward Expansion.
1. The border differences between the two maps were the Oregon Territory 1846, Mexican Cession 1848, Gadsden Purchase 1853, Disputed Texas Territory 1848, and the Lonestar Republic 1845. This is because on the second map it highlights the certain states that offer natural resources and it shows no states being divided or excluded from the rest of the United States. Meaning that all the states shown are apart of the U.S. and that there are no territories shared or owned by another country. Whereas, the first map shows the different territories owned and shared by the United States.
The Westward Expansion expand from 1807 to 1910 during that time America changed forever geographically, economically and advanced in technology. The different happenings that occurred during the Westward Expansion defined the land boundaries of the modern day the United States and various happenings and techniques during help make the modern day the United States. If the outcomes of the wars fought during the Expansion were different the modern day the United States could look very different geographically. The railroad made traveling and settling claims easier which increased the population in the west without those settlements other countries could have taken the land from U.S. by settling their citizens there. The government through the Homestead Act help many settlers become land owners and succeed in building towns in the west.
This ultimate expansion showed France and the globe how strong the United States became after the Seven Year's War and the value of victory. Of course the land has to be explored by the many anxious settlers who want to expand west and start a new life. Jefferson gave that opportunity to those brave people and Lewis and Clark will head out west and explore that wonderful purchase. But the many thousands of miles of land would have a concerning backlash as slavery expands west and the states fighting for slavery rights in those states leading to outbreak of
People were drawn to the West because it was scene as the last resort to make a living when all else failed in the East. Communication with friends and family who had moved west led these pioneers to believe the journey would be easy and the reward for getting west would be best. And the greatly available land was the strongest pulling factor to people interested in adventuring west. Migration was a personal choice that depended on several key factors, “Age of the head of household; economic status; personal attitudes; and projected costs and benefits of the resettlement.” Most historians agree that the majority of the people who migrated west were middle class and mostly immigrants to the US.
I agree with Morgan’s central ideas that there is no true first hand accounts of true westward expansion. I believe that there are no first hand accounts there is only biographies about the people that played a big role in westward expansion. There are no first hand accounts of the people physically moving from west that i have read or heard about. In “Chief Joseph Speaks Selected Statements and Speeches by the Nez Percé Chief” there are many speeches done by Chief Joseph that are accounts of westward expansion but they are in third person.
During the mid 1800s America was in its prime, during the American Industrial Revolution. During the revolution, immigrants from many foreign nations began piling on ships and setting sail for America to start a new life. America was the place to be at the time and it was the land of opportunity for many. And after Lewis and Clark’s exploration came to a close, people heard of all of the prominent land and opportunity. And as word got out, people wanted in on this newly seen westward territory.
The Westward Expansion consisted of almost 7 million Americans migrating west, hoping to get land and be wealthy. It is often called Manifest Destiny, because many people believed settlers was intended to expand the west. Because so many people thought this way it was also thought the U.S was physically separated from Europe. This migration of people included people from Spain, France, Mexico, and other countries. The Western Expansion had a part in the foreign policies in the expansion towards the pacific and the way the U.S treated their relationship with other
The foundations that were originated in American culture are Manifest Destiny and Social Darwinism. To Americans, Manifest Destiny meant gaining land from coast to coast. From the original 13 colonies, America's mission to expand was partially fulfilled with the Louisiana Purchase. The United States then expanded from North Atlantic coast to the South. In need of more land, high rates of immigration encouraged Americans to expand westward.
