Feudalism was the political governing system during the Middle Ages. It evolved in a time where people needed protection from invasions. This system was meant for the kings and important people to have control over the serfs and the peasants.
The most important relationship in the feudal society is between the lord, the vassals, and the peasants. The lord was a monarch who controlled all land and people. Vassals were noblemen that had been promised a fief (from the lord) in exchange for military service and loyalty. This is known as the feudal contract. When a vassal was granted a fief, the peasants and buildings on that land were included

Another reason why the middle ages were referred to as dark is because of the decline in production of culture. “The passage illustrates medieval education, which was provided primarily at monasteries or church schools and was not available to most people” (Doc E). This was the adapters note from a passage about a monk who went to Chartres to study Hippocrates and it says how education was not provided for most people, which explains why there was a decline in culture because only very little could get educated. “I learned the ordinary symptoms of diseases and picked up surface knowledge of ailments. This was not enough to satisfy my desires” (Doc E).
The Middle ages started between 500 and 1500, which was split into different sections: the Early and High/Late Middle ages. The earliest part of the Middle Ages were also known as the ‘Dark Ages,’ which reigned between 476 to 1100 roughly. This started after the fall of the Roman Empire, which took most of Europe in a period of decline, dominantly Western Europe; including modern day England, France, Spain, Germany, Spain, Italy, and others. Following the collapse of the last empire, the economy and structure of government/society had collapse, causing many to fall back into small farming societies. On top of that, many invaders such as the Viking, Magyars, Germanic tribes, and Muslim invaders put them into a further primitive state.

In the Middle Ages, the power of people impacted the society, because of the Feudal System. In other words, the rankings of people. There were four groups. The Kings and Queens were at the top, then the nobles, the knights, and last peasants and serfs(Doc. 1). Serfs and peasants had very little land given and they even had to provide food that they farmed for the knights and nobles.
The manor system was based on rights and obligations between a lord and his serfs. When the killing spree in London, Quentavic and Rochester happened the feudal system helped put everything back into order ( doc 8 ). This helped govern areas and it gave control over different regions. In exchange for military protection and other services, a lord granted land to a vassal. Then the vassal was to protect the lord from invasions and other attacks.
