Gang violence is an increasing problem in Urban Minority Communities. Young people are dropping out of schools in record numbers, and higher percentages of the population are withdrawing from the labor force. The more people that drop out can turn their heads to joining a gang. Those that don’t find work can find themselves joining a gang and doing crime to fill their time. The number of young people joining gangs are increasing and more crime will happen as a result. The perception of gangs has changed over time, there is more violence, and the majority of juveniles are young people. Young minority males are unfairly stereotyped, leading to racial profiling of groups consisting of young males. Between 1984 and 1993, the number of homicides committed by juveniles increased by 169 percent, representing an increase in the number of gang related crime. Between 1989 and and 1995, the number of students reporting gang violence in their school increased from 15 to 28 percent. Gangs have been in existence ever since the rise of humanity. Humans have always banded together for mutual protection and support and to better dominate the others ( teen violence …show more content…
Joining a gang in adolescence has significant consequences in adulthood beyond criminal behavior, even after a person leaves a gang. Even after young adults leave a gang they still pursue in criminal activity. A vast majority has left gangs long ago but the consequences stuck with them long term. Those who joined a gang were ages 27 to 33 they were more likely to receive income from illegal sources and more than twice as likely to have been incarcerated in the previous year. You can end up getting caught dealing illegal drugs and the troubles won’t be worth it. You can never leave peacefully because you’re always on the lookout and paranoid. Joining a gang may sound good but things could happen to prevent you from

Gang Injunctions against Diablos and Westside Gang Throughout the years, communities have been warned and targeted constantly against gangs and their formations. Gangs have expanded in quantity and their influence has expanded in different cities all throughout California. According to the Escondido Police Department, "Gangs can be organized around race or ethnic groups, money-making activities, or territory. Most gang members are male; they range in ages from 8 to 22 years.
In the United States, every year there are around 2,000 gang-related homicides and in the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, it explores the issues of gang violence, and teenagers in gangs. Around 40% of all members in gangs are teenagers, who are getting involved in some dangerous things very early in life. In the novel The Outsiders, the “Greasers” which is a gang of all teenagers, fight other gangs and commit serious crimes such as murder. We as a society need to pinpoint why teenagers join gangs and stop them beforehand. We also need to help people get out of gangs if they are already in one.
Gang violence is running rampnd across the nation. Just last week over two hundred cases of gang violence were recorded. As a nation, we can’t stand for this any longer. This is getting out of hand and it puts the public in danger. Now I have created a novel solution to this problem.
In Chicago, and all over the nation, the effects of gang activity have been displayed, specifically in low income and poverty torn communities. Poverty is measured depending on a family’s annual income and determining if the amount falls below the poverty threshold for the family’s size. If the annual income does fall below the threshold, then the family and every individual in it is considered to be in poverty. Gang activity is more visible in the areas specifically in major cities similar to Chicago where poverty is a commonality in communities. although gangs might add structure in order where the government fails to do so in the projects and and similar low income communities the negative effects such as the distribution of drugs, violence,
United States: Greenhaven Publishing. The book provides various opposing viewpoints regarding the cause of juvenile crime and how the criminal justice system should treat juvenile offenders. Each argument highlights the main risk factors for juvenile crime. For example, gang plays a large part of juvenile violence.
Where I reside, Silver Spring Maryland (Montgomery County), there are no gang related activities. I live in a suburban area and the law enforcement are very strict and the area is safe. However, gang crimes exist in Prince George's County and Baltimore City, Maryland. Maryland had passed ordinances prohibiting loitering, and many forms of aggressive public behavior, such as, consuming alcohol in public, throwing up gang signs and disturbing the peace by playing music too loud. Law enforcement police attempted to discourage gang membership by prohibiting behavior that relates to gang activities.
According to the U.S Department of Justice (2001), the reasons that young adults join gangs can be either complex or for personal reasons. In their most recent study, it was found that just like male gang members, females join gangs because of economic problems and because of gang-family involvement and the pressure that comes from that family dynamic (pg. 2). According to Deschenes and Esbebsen (1999, pg. 63), traditionally, it is more common for males to be involved in gang and gang activity versus females. This is because this is the norm in our society and it is the stereotype when it comes to males
I believe gangs are rising because people want to have protection while being in jail because they know that someone is watching their back, and if they don’t join a gang, their likelihood of being a victim is going to increase. It is also difficult to leave a gang after you join because it usually ends violently when you are trying to leave, even death can be an outcome of this. Even when you leave jail, you are still considered to be part of the gang and recruit more people on the outside to commit more crimes. This can include dealing drugs, all the way to assassinating someone. There are so many gangs out there, the worse the crime, the easier it is to join a gang.
The brain is more sensitive to the influence of drugs and alcohol. Most likely today gangs are used and sell drugs and it might be easier for them to make powerful businesses to make a big profit, including weapons, and stolen property. Teen gang violence affects the neighborhood, middle school, high school, and the community. Which causes them to miss behave and act upon a gang. Gang should be terminated
In fact, girls have been a part of gangs since the earliest accounts from New York in the early 1800s. Throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, female gang activity has seen the sharpest increase in participation, especially in comparison to boys. There was a 50 percent increase in serious crimes by teenage girls between 1968 and 1974, compared to a 10 percent increase for
(Armstrong; Howell). These statistics show much former gang members rely on other people for economic help. Also, gang members are “three times more likely between ages 27 and 33 to report committing a crime” (Armstrong). This shows that former gang members are not more just likely to have economic and educational problems, but also have problems with the law too. These three problems combined represent a very rough and difficult life.
Most gangs include mainly male people who can range up to the ages of 12 to 25 years old. Gangs are commonly found in large cities, which either include a white dominant race or a black dominant race. They follow a consistent pattern of either being truants and come from unsupportive families. They can also be people who are unemployed and struggling to make means and therefore they result to gang activities. They are seen to be associated with criminal activity and violent behavior as well as prostitution and drug laundering including many other criminal offenses.
Gang activities have been increasing over the years from crimes ranging from robberies to homicides. In California, estimates were made by the Justice Department that approximately 175000 to 200000 persons were members of gangs. In the county of Los Angeles gang activities for over a period of five years accounted for over 23000 of the crimes that occurred.(Friedrichs. M. 1999). Gangs have become not only a problem for those communities where the gang's ar located but has become a problem for everyone.
Throughout the 17th-century gangs have been causing havoc in people's life and destroying the society. The National Institute of Justice (2011) has defined a gang as "A group of collective members which create an atmosphere of intimidation among citizens. " Many of these gangs are well organized, using different forms of violence to control neighbourhoods and to conduct their illegal activities. The National Gang Threat Assessment (2011) reports that “Gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions.” Street Gangs have caused incidences of violence that is confined in the inner city of many countries.
