Representation of people in western media has been a contested topic for many years. With its influence in the way that people construct their identities it is necessary to look at what images and ideas are being portrayed. Many people are aware that the western standard of beauty is that of the slender, fair skinned woman with straight hair and blue eyes. However, one should also be made aware of how the constant repetition of this image in the media has lead to this standard becoming the normalised and “ideal” look that women and girls should strive to achieve. Michel Foucault discusses the ways in which discourses are normalised and how they are used as a means of control. He looks at how knowledge is given power to justify the ideologies …show more content…
The greater variety of skin tones alone provide players with the feeling that they will be able to create sims after themselves or the people with whom they identify. Furthermore, the ability to mold features as well as the availability of more ethnic features allows for the representation of many different ethnicities to whatever accuracy the player feels. In addition to all of these changes, the Sims4 later came out with an update that removed the gender binary option. Instead, when creating the sim, players are given a mini survey, whereby they tick what the sim is capable or not capable of achieving biologically. The survey deals with the stature of the sim - sims may now have a feminine or masculine physique, however, the option for breasts and breast adjustments are still determined by gender. Pregnancy options - which allow players to determine whether their sims can fall pregnant, make another sim pregnant or neither despite the sim’s gender. The options also allow the sim to be able to stand or sit when going to the bathroom, or just sit. Beyond this, the update also allows for sims, regardless of gender, to wear clothing, hairstyles and accessory items previously restricted to the other gender. The update attempts to be inclusive of cis as well as non-cis non-heteronormative people. Which in previous installments had not been represented in the game (bar the possibility for same sex couples in the later games, but that was the extent of their
The premises that Dennis Baron's stated were how it gets confusing when you do not identify yourself as a specific gender, It gets more complicated. Many people will get offended if they are gender classification is not listed. There
The fact that we, as players don't see the face clearly, but can identify the character as male is interesting. The hat, the clothes, the bag, even the hairstyle, and hair colour lead the player to assume that the character is a male. When this game was released in 2011, there were still some stereotypes of how females should

One reason is that adults are generally unaware of the possible limitations of gender-specific toys, as indicated by 56% of adults in a survey we conducted (Appendix B: Problem, Question 5). Another reason is that adults are unsure of how to choose toys based on skills. Our survey indicated that 68% of adults purchase gender-specific toys since there are no existing methods to aid them in making gender-neutral choices (Appendix B: Problem, Question 3). 1.4 What has been done abroad?
This article also talks about how in the past a significantly small amount of toys were made specifically for boys and girls. Many ads for toys in the 1970s deliberately had boys playing with dolls and kitchen sets, while the girls played with toy cars and airplanes. While this was true for the 1970s, now it is more common for marketers to convince parents to buy two versions of the same, or similar toys for different genders (Robb). For example Living In Lego City, written by Alexandra Lange, talks about the difference between the brands two major cities: Friends’
There are grey and in-between areas. Sex characteristics do not always define a person’s gender identity. Many people are nonbinary and that’s perfectly okay, just as many people are cisgender and that is fine as well. The best thing about this paper is that it explains that, and that many cultures accept this
The moment a child is born, society presents it a complex gift steering the course of its future. Gender is the most important social construct in the human life as it shapes the way we interact and navigate the world we live in. From the colours that the baby is wrapped in to the hues of wallpaper in the bedroom – a girl, is most likely to be thrown into a world of pastel pink and lavender, if you are a boy, you are most likely to be surrounded by bold red and blue hues. We are already starting to be forced into identifying with a specific gender. Dolls, plastic vacuum cleaners and Fischer Price kitchenettes are given to girls, and are taught that Barbie and Bratz dolls are gender appropriate toys; shopping, fashion and makeup is that which defines femininity.
Some argue that people acquire their gender identity based on their social interactions with others or based on the gender roles, or stereotypes. For example, women usually tend to be more emotional and sensitive, while men usually tend to be aggressive and athletic (Whalen & Maurer-Starks, 2008). However, nowadays more and more men are becoming emotional and less aggressive and, in some cases, they are becoming homosexual, maybe because of the way they were raised; some children are raised without being limited by gender stereotypes and without being judged based on them, and this is most likely the effect of the current society people live in; where many countries accept homosexuality. Furthermore, nowadays there is a wide variety of gender options a person can choose, and this led to the fact that cyberspace must also adapt to this change, or more specifically speaking, the social networking websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For example, a newspaper article said that many Facebook users demanded Facebook to increase the gender options, rather than only “Male” and “Female”, so, Facebook responded recently by adding 50 different gender options.
Unlike several of Gaiman’s alternative works that have feminine characters like Black flower and imp, “How to speak to Girls” focuses on the male protagonist, Enn. Enn and his friend Vic visit a celebration within which Vic makes advances on the hostess, Stella, whereas Enn finds numerous women to do and check with. Enn himself admits at the start of the story to having no expertise reprehension, or having physical relations with any women and sense of this, he appears up to Vic United Nations agency, “seemed to possess had several girlfriends” (Gaiman). this is often any emphasized by the actual fact that Vic convinces Enn to accompany him to the party by the mere expression, “Girls! Girls!
Countless advertisements feature thin, beautiful women as either over-sexualized objects, or as subordinates to their male counterparts. The mold created by society and advertisers for women to fit into is not entirely attainable. More often than not, models are Photoshopped and altered to the point that they don’t even resemble themselves. W. Charisse Goodman suggests, “The mass media do not
Portrayal of Women in Malaysia Fashion Magazine Advertisements and Their Racial Stereotypes "6 billion advertisements appear in magazines and other periodicals" and occupies 52% of a magazine 's content (Plous 628). According to Plous, advertisements contain the most shocking stereotyping on women. Women 's bodies, within magazines, are exposed four times more often than men. Not only this, but it has also been found that "magazine advertisements have a tendency to portray women 's body parts, rather than their faces" (660). For example, "by 1993-1994, 42.8% of the advertisements with White women contained a display of cleavage or breasts, compared to 22.8% in 1985-1986" (634).
How can people in society look at each other and judge, in our economy people are judged by the color of their skin, how they speak, and the way the dress. People shouldn’t be able to judge someone without knowing them. In my opinion, I don’t like it when humans are portrayed as a “stereotype”. A specific example, would be how Muslims are treated in America. In the American society people look below us as if we are terrorists, prior to the 9/11 attack.
Unlike ‘sex’, which typically refers to the biological and physiological differences, gender is a sociological concept that describes the social and cultural constructions that is associated with one’s sex (Giddens & Sutton, 2013, p. 623-667). The constructed (or invented) characteristics that defines gender is an ongoing process that varies between societies and culture and it can change over time. For example, features that are overly masculine in one culture can be seen as feminine in another; however, the relation between the two should not be seen as static. Gender socialization is thought to be a major explanation for gender differences, where children adhere to traditional gender roles from different agencies of socialization. Gender

A large body of literature done in the field concentrates on the effect of gender stereotypes on women in the run for office. Gender stereotypes play a crucial part in raising the glass ceiling; it emphasizes and reinforces beliefs that women lack leadership abilities and skills. As information shortcuts, stereotypical perceptions partly shape public opinion on female politicians’ characteristics and their policy competences (Holman, Merolla, and Zechmeister, 2011; Schneider and Bos, 2013; Bauer, 2015).Apparently, there are characteristics that belong to men and women respectively and that correspond with gender roles consisting of communal and agentic roles. Women are tied closely with communal roles, such as in comparison with men, women
