Exam 4: Final Exam
1. What is a GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) and how is it different from a GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism). How is a Genetically Engineered Organism created?
A Genetically Modified Organism is an organism that is altered to produce new traits in an organism. Say you want all of the peaches you grow; you want them to look bright red similar to a Red Delicious apple. You take the DNA from the apple and when you grow the peaches, you put in the apple’s trait so that the peach produces a similar characteristic. This DOES NOT naturally occurs in nature. A GMO is how you describe an organism that has already been altered. GEO refers to the actual process of changing the desired species.
2. Where was the first place on Earth to

How is infertility defined? Define and describe the process for the following ARTs:
Infertility is the inability to become pregnant.
IUI
IUI is a means of assisted pregnancy.
During this process, the sperm are cleaned, and directly inserted into the uterus of the woman. This dramatically increases the quantity of sperm that make it into the fallopian tubes.
IVF
IVF is the process of combining a man 's sperm with a woman 's egg in a dish. It is also a method of assisted pregnancy, outside of the body.
PGD
PGD is the testing of embryos for chromosomal defects or genetic illnesses a few days after fertilization. 4. In order for a population to remain in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, 5 stipulations must be met. Name and define the 5 stipulations that we talked about in class.
Large population – In a great population, changes are minimal in allele frequencies.
Random mating – If mating were not random, alleles would grow in occurrence. The chance of mating is the same.
No selection – Equivalent chance of lasting and copying.
No migration – All alleles stay and come in.
No mutation – All allele features stay
GMO's are genetically altered organisms made by scientists. By altering the organisms' genetics it could change its size, color, taste, and physical appearance. A GMO is meant to be stronger, better and simply more effective than past generations that haven't been altered. They are more capable of adapting and surviving new environments they wouldn't naturally be able to. For example crops can be made pest resistant, sweeter, bigger, be able to grow faster, be able to grow under any type of conditions rather than having to wait for certain season to get that certain type of crop and even be the new 'edible vaccines'(Scientific American Inc).
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. Genetically modifying an organism involves inserting genes from
Often times a woman is not able to become pregnant on her own, so In vitro Fertilization is an available option. A woman
Genetically modified food, usually short written as GM food, is food which composed by artificial modified DNA, like insert genes from another organism. GM food is not newly introduced technology, the first scientist discovered genes can be transfer between organism was in 1946, the first genetically modified products first appeared in 1983. However, debates over the topic has never stopped. Some people hold positive view towards GM food, think that it can improve our world.
Genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs, are organisms
Infertility may play havoc in a couple’s life who want to have their biological child and even it can drive the couple to see themselves as a failure to be fruitful and multiply. Based on World Health Organization (WHO), about 8-10% of couples in industrialised countries have reproductive problem. However, since science always develop day by day lead to even impossible thing sometimes can be possible for example reproductive problem nowadays can be overcome by In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), Intra-uterine Insemination (IUI) and and many more. IVF is such a double edged sword (Amit Kumar Banerjee,2006). After the birth of first baby through IVF, Louise Brown in1978, the famous philosopher, Mary Warnock said that it is important for the public
Infertility can be defined as failure to achieve pregnancy in women in child bearing age who are having regular marital life and don’t use any contraceptive method for more than one year. It can be primary which means that the lady never conceived before or secondary in which she has a history that she gets pregnant before. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a treatment for infertility in which a woman's eggs (oocytes) are fertilized by sperm in a laboratory dish. One or more of the fertilized eggs (embryos) are then transferred into the woman's uterus, where it is hoped they will implant and produce a pregnancy.
Genes are blueprints that determine an organism’s traits. Organisms get a new combination of genes, hence, and new combination of traits from Genetic engineering. These combinations cannot occur in nature, and cannot be developed by natural means. It can only be done throughout technological achievements. A lot of scientists believe and deem that genetic engineering is a revolutionary breakthrough concept.
GMO (genetically modified organisms) is food that was genetically modified in a lab to make food more efficient. For example they use GMOs to make the food grow bigger and make it more resistant to cold weather. GMOs are not considered safe and in many countries in they’ve banned GMOs. The best way to avoid GMOs is to shop in health food stores or shop in the produce area where the stickers say “NO GMOs.” It would be better and safer for people to eat organic food than GMOs.
IVF is a procedure, used to overcome a range of fertility issues, by which an egg and sperm are joined together outside the body, in a specialised laboratory. The fertilised egg (embryo) is allowed to grow in a protected environment for some days before being transferred into the woman's uterus increasing the chance that a pregnancy will occur. The process of fertilisation take place over a few hours and a number of embryos can form. Biological Background “ You will then have daily hormone injections for about 12 days.
What is the Difference between Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics? Doing Biology is an interesting aspect of human study and it involves various unique findings that have paved way for major medical researches, discoveries and inventions of medicines that are all useful for the health of living beings. Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics form part and parcel of Biology and are overlapping in their theories and approaches with some minute differences.
IVF or In Vitro Fertilization means fertilization in glass, which involves fertilization of a woman’s egg by a man’s sperm outside of the body and in a lab. In general, IVF offers the highest chance for conception. For many couples, a single attempt of IVF is more likely to be successful than many months of other treatments. The Advantages of IVF are: 1.
Everyone is entitled to choose their own lifestyle, whether they want to have a child or not. Some females who seek to have children find it easy, although some are unfortunate. There are numerous of reasonings, such as being too old to be pregnant, damage to the Fallopian tube or uterus and cancer radiation or chemotherapy. As our generation goes on, many discoveries revolving biology is produced and one of it is the In Vitro Fertilization or “IVF”. It is the procedure of fertilization where they save sperm sample, take an egg from the women and physically combining it in a laboratory dish where the egg and the sperm is now called an embryo.
At any point in her life, a woman can discover that she is unable to have children on her own due to being infertile. While some women are unabashed by such information, many others are filled with grief and sorrow at the thought of not being able to give birth and raise children. The same can be said about infertile men; while men of course do not give birth, being infertile can be upsetting, or sometimes humiliating. In past years, science has produced several solutions to the problem of infertility, and the most talked-about solution today is in vitro fertilization, or IVF. This is a type of artificial insemination.
