On January 13th, 1999 in Baltimore, Maryland, a girl named Hae Min Lee was reported missing. Hae was a senior at Woodlawn High School. She was popular, she played field hockey and lacrosse, and she was an exceptional student. On February 9th, 1999, Hae’s body was discovered in Leakin Park; about an hour’s drive away from the high school. She was found behind a fallen tree, and her body was buried barely six inches in the ground. Manual strangulation was the cause of death. Adnan Syed was later arrested for first degree murder of Hae Min Lee. He also, was a Woodlawn High School student. He was popular, athletic, and an all-around mellow guy. He was also Hae’s ex-boyfriend at the time. Obviously, Adnan would be one of the first suspects. However, …show more content…
He tells the police that Adnan, did in fact, kill Hae. Jay also helped take her body to Leakin Park to help bury it; making Jay an accomplice. This was the police’s main lead in the entire investigation. The story seemed some what legit for the most part. Plus, it was the only thing they could really go on. Adnan was convicted and is now in prison to this day. But Adnan did not have a fair trial. There are too many details that aren’t filled in Jay’s story, as well as, Jay shouldn’t have been considered a reliable witness in the first …show more content…
Which stated by the Fifth Amendment: ” nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb”. The funny part is that the Jury was actually in favor of Adnan’s innocence in the first trial. The second trial, however, determined Adnan’s fate. Adnan’s Sixth Amendment right is complicated. He did have an attorney, however, the question is whether or not if Gutierrez actually tried as stated previously mentioned earlier in the paper. With Gutierrez constantly demanding for money and her not preparing a strong enough process with examining all the evidence that should’ve been reviewed, is what violated his Sixth Amendment right. But the one amendment that was absolutely violated was Adnan’s Fourteenth Amendment. Because of Adnan’s religion and ethnicity, the prosecutors based almost their entire argument off of it. They spoke as if he was from Pakistan, and that he had relatives there that could help him flee. However, Adnan is a natural born United States citizen; promised his right to be upheld in the court of law. That didn’t help with the prosecutors making and persuading biased statements towards Adnan. Essentially, the prosecutors swayed the Jury’s belief with these biased
7th Amendment to the Constitution The 7th amendment to the constitution of the United States was formulated and then ratified as a part of the famous Bill of Rights. This specific Amendment defines a citizen’s right to trial by a jury and in the Bill of Rights, it is mentioned quite frequently. It was fundamentally designed to prevent the establishment of dictatorial courts of justice, where the judges’ decisions were subjected to the control and whims of the government. Just as the first ten amendments to the constitution of the United States, the seventh amendment also plays a prominent role in the American legal and political theory.
STATEMENT OF THE CASE On January 13, 1999. the defendant Adnan Syed (seventeen), lived in Baltimore County, Maryland and was accused of the murder of his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee (seventeen). Jay Wilds is involved in the crime, an acquaintance of Adnan who claims to have helped bury the body of Hae Min Lee. Stephanie Mcpherson, was Jay Wilds girlfriend at the time of the murder.
Even with Jay’s testimony, I don't believe that Adnan Syed should have been convicted of murder on such little evidence. The state’s motive for Adnan is based on Muslim stereotypes and no real evidence. They say that when Hae broke up with Adnan she besmirched his honor, forcing him to have to kill her to regain it. Adnan has shown many times that he doesn’t follow strict Muslim rules by dating multiple girls, partying, and even smoking marijuana.
On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was reported missing and later found dead in Leakin park in Baltimore . Adnan Syed, Hae Min Lee’s ex boyfriend was convicted of the murder then sentenced to life on the charge of 1st degree murder. Jay Wilds was the witness for the trial that stated that Adnan had killed Hae, and both Adnan and himself had buried the body. Adnan’s lawyer for this trial was Christina Gutierrez who failed to use the only alibi for Adnan, Asia McClain, and go through DNA evidence on Hae. I believe Adnan Syed should be granted a second trial, because of the competence of his attorney.
Here I will tell you how absurd and inane this “speculation” is and why Adnan Syed was condemned wrongfully and injusticely. Personally I think there is a lot of evidence proving Adnan's innocence which leads me to my next claim. Adnan Syed does in fact deserve a new trial. What led me to this
In episode 7, Sarah admits to Deirdre Enright, who works at the University Of Virginia School Of Law and runs their Innocence Project clinic, that there isn’t any “gross negligence or malfeasance or something on the part of the detectives or the State Attorney’s office, everyone seems to be doing their job, responsibly.” The people working on the case were doing their jobs correctly, and Adnan was convicted, not because the case was built for his conviction, but because the evidence and other information collected pointed to Adnan’s guilt. And Jim Trainum, the detective hired by the Serial staff, tells Sarah that “the detectives in this case were cautious and methodical. They weren’t rushing to grab suspects or to dismiss them either. The evidence collection was well documented,” and that the case is “better than average” (Ep. 8, Jim).
Hae Min Lee was an extraordinary girl who had a bright future ahead of her, until she was murdered on January 13. Hae Min Lee was only 18 years old when she was murdered and the person who was charged for her murder was Adnan Syed; Adnan was Hae’s ex boyfriend and was believed to have kill Hae, and there was enough evidence to help prove that he was guilty. However that is not the case for Adnan, because he is innocent and did not kill Hae Min Lee on January 13. The first thing that should be pointed out is about when Adnan found out that Hae had died; he was clearly shown to be very distraught. As described by others they say, “We went inside and Adnan was sitting at the kitchen crying, after a while he said that there had to be a mistake and Hae was still alive…
My verdict for Adnan’s Syed on the act on to see if he can testify about to see if he is innocent and I'll tell you why. My first piece of evidence is that Adnan did have an, ex-girlfriend but things got worse. When time goes on Adnan was charged with a human killing towards his high school ex-girlfriend and got sentenced to 17 years in an institution and this is why. Adnan strangled his ex-girlfriend to death because he was not showing joy in Hae Min Lee because she was was getting a new boyfriend. The detectives needed to find the murderer who killed Hae Min Lee, and if the investigators need strong informal evidence, then the investigators can put charges on Adnan.
Abby G. Burke Mrs.Sargeant English 12 3 April 2023 Is Adnan Syed guilty? On January 13, 1999, an 18-year-old girl by the name of Hae Min Lee went missing. In Baltimore 1999 on January 13, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School, disappeared. Her body was found on February 9 near a park in Baltimore. Her ex- boyfriend Adnan Syed, a 17 year old senior was convicted of killing her and till this day he sits in a cell waiting for his innocence to be proven. Adnan’s star witness Jay, his former classmate who testified that he helped Adnan dispose of Hae’s body. The question everyone's asking is, is Adnan Syed really not guilty
Using the fact that Adnan led a 'dual life', he is easily found guilty since everyone already thinks of him as shady since they found out he did drugs. But anyone who knew Adnan, knew he wasn't shady. " He was like the community's golden child." , "He was an honor roll student, volunteer EMT. He was on the football team.
In January, 1999 a teenage girl was found murdered, and her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was found guilty on minimal evidence. The sentence of Adnan not only shook the entirety of the families and friends of Lee and Syed, but all of America in 2014 when Sarah Koenig started a podcast, titled Serial. Adnan Syed should not have been found guilty in 1999, and using sources from Serial, including a timeline that does not make sense and that has been changed many times, conflicting stories from people involved with the murder, and lack of evidence used to sentence Adnan Syed for being guilty. The first piece of evidence that the state proposed to the judge and jury was the timeline that Jay Wilds told police. In Jay’s statement to police at his first
If I was part of the jury I would’ve said that Adnan is not guilty. I say this because there’s simply not enough valid evidence that clearly points to Adnan murdering Hae. I still go with my initial instinct that something is up with Jay. My theory is that Jay was jealous of Adnan and Stephanie’s relationship. Peers described Jay as “He was ‘mean, intimidating, shady’”
On February 9th, 1999, Hae Min Lee’s body was found buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park––death by strangulation. Later that year, an innocent man by the name of Adnan Syed was convicted on an extremely shaky case for the murder of this young girl. However incriminating the call records may appear at first glance, Adnan Syed, with an alibi to prove his innocence, had no motive to kill Hae Min Lee. To put it simply, Adnan Syed had no reason to murder Hae. After the couple split up, multiple witnesses confirmed that Adnan did not seem to be ridiculously or unusually upset; it was merely another high school breakup.
Adnan was then found guilty of first degree murder and kidnapping on February 25th, 2000. He was sentenced to life in prison. Adnan is guilty. Why? Adnan Syed is the only suspect with a distinct motive, he loved her.
