What is a hero? To most, it’s probably the classic superhero- the one with superpowers and can fly. To others, it might be a fictional character with a magic wand or a demigod in a prophecy. To some, it might be a real life person- a famous one or the ones who raised you. But a hero isn’t just defined by their superpowers or what book they come from, it’s the choice to do the right thing even if it means getting hurt in the process. Heroes don’t have to be from a book or a movie franchise. Heroes can be ordinary people thrust into impossible situations or one who sticks their neck out to save yours.
Take the nameless French girl from Elie Wiesel’s Night for instance. She slipped him a small piece of bread after Elie got beat by Idek, a guard. She could’ve kept that piece of bread for herself- she certainly needed it- but instead, she gave him that

Heroes can be the person who pulls the strings or a hero disguised as a dictator. Graff from Ender’s Game written by Orson Scott Card is a prime example of a hero in disguise. Graff pulls the strings in Ender’s life to mold him into an Earth-Saving commander. Most people wouldn’t consider him a hero, but he is a hero in his own right. Graff helped Ender to success by putting him through a series of tests while in Battle School. “... To begin. Be creative. Think of every stacked, impossible, unfair star arrangement you can. Think of another way to bend the rules. Late notification. Unequal forces. Then run the simulations and aee which ones are hardest, which easiest. We want an intelligent progression here. We want to bring him along.” He did what was best for the survival of the human race but also what was best for Ender. “...But don’t hurt this boy[Ender]” “Are you joking?” “I mean, don’t hurt him anymore than you have too.” Even with the task of forming a brilliant commander, Graff kept his humanity and refrained from hurting Ender in anyway he
Ender is surprised by the offer considering the fact that they have already removed his monitor, which is soon revealed by Colonel Graff as a final test and thus he passed. Ender passes because Graff is satisfied not with hurting Stilson but for his motivation which was a sign that Ender was unlike his brother. While Graff was speaking it became much clearer that Ender as a third was only born due to I.F consent making him I.F property. Though he was practically I.F property Graff did not force him to go to battle school, but Graff asked the parents to leave the room so he could begin to persuade him in attending. Graff begins to persuade Ender saying things such as his parents may love him, but they will not miss him because of how difficult he is, then he begins to tell Ender about how his father was one of nine kids and the persecution he underwent.

But Graff didn't understand that. He tricked Ender on thinking that the real war was a game. For instance, it states “ I didn't want to kill them all. I didn't want to kill anybody! I'm not a killer!
In Ender’s Game, Colonel Graff states, “With Ender, we have to strike a delicate balance. Isolate him enough that he remains creative-otherwise he’ll adopt the system here and we’ll lose him. At the same time, we need to make sure he keeps a strong ability to lead. ”Graff is talking about his plans for Ender and how to make the perfect commander. This was the major story line throughout the novel.
We learn from this scenario that Ender has come to believe that the only rational policy to insure one’s safety in the world is to be ready always to inflict grievous bodily harm on anyone who threatens him. No adult, authority, law, or social institution may be relied upon. “The power to cause pain is the only power that matters, the power to kill and destroy, because if you can’t kill then you are always subject to those who can, and nothing and no one will ever save you.” (p 232) Despite the revelation of this philosophy, after the fight is over the reader is once again reassured that Ender is at heart a pacifist.
When Ender kills Stilson and Bonzo, Colonel Graff immediately defends Ender by saying those kids deserved to die. Another point is, when Ender beats the simulated Giant game. He is the only one that has ever done so. The last necessary plot is when Ender leads the Dragon Army to win every battle they were in. It shows that no one can beat Ender and it also represents that Ender is the quintessential recruit that the I.F. needs.
Graff pushes Ender to his limit a lot and Ender gets tired of getting manipulated sometimes and causes him to get angry: “Dink was right, they were the enemy, they loved nothing and cared for nothing and he was not going to do what they wanted, he was damn well not going to do anything for them, He had only one memory that was safe, one good thing, and those bastards had plowed it into him with the rest of the manure-”( 151-152). At the Battle School evil thrives in the environment and people’s villainous side comes out. In the novel, other settings have an evil environment too. While Ender has to deal with problems in the Battle School in space, Ender’s family deals with the war that's bound to come on Earth. War remains a threat throughout most of the novel on Earth.
“It had to be a trick or you couldn't have done it. It's the bind we were in.”(342). Ender becomes mad at Graff for this because he used the killer and the empathetic side of him to defeat the
Who is a hero? A hero takes many forms, such as an allegorical hero, a tragic hero, or an epic hero. In the age of postmodernism, there are instances where a person can be both a hero and a villain. Odysseus is difficult to identify as a hero because of his many vices.
Other people put him in situations where his defensive side turns into his bad side, but Ender always wishes for events to be ended without violence. His compassion is his strongest trait, and it bonds people to him; his ruthlessness wins their undoubted faith in him as a commander. Or at least that is what Colonel Graff
Characters While in battle school Ender meets an array of people, both problematic and helpful. One of Enders first encounters is colonel Graff who recruited him to the
Anyone that shows great courage and strength can be a hero, because those are the quality of a true hero. “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
What qualifies a person to be called a hero? Officially a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Most people think of a superhero, like Batman or Spiderman, or someone closer to them such as their mother or their life-saving doctor. Heroes tend to be the main character in a story.
