The training style of Spartan armies left a long lasting impact on Ancient Rome’s military troops. Sparta was a warrior state. Citizens had a program called Agoge that trained them into warriors. They were placed in this military training at seven years old and were expected to be strong when they reached maturity age. The Romans took on these training styles when they needed a strong army. The Roman armies used to be comprised of volunteers but after being defeated, they were determined to make their army better. They did this through vigorous trainings. Roman soldiers called legionaries, were forced to march for long distances carrying heavy loads. Every year, senior military officers, called Tribunes, would select the strongest men to be part of the army. In the end, the Romans became professional in fighting and had one of the most disciplined armies. The Spartans had elite military force and Ancient Rome generals trained their armies to be like Spartans. The selection for the strongest amongst the population was a common trait in Sparta that was passed down to Ancient Rome. Ancient Greek’s military trainings influenced Ancient Rome in their powerful army. However, a strong army would be ineffective without a strong leader. Alexander the Great significantly influenced the leadership style of Julius Caesar. Alexander the Great was the king and renown general of Macedonia. He led the Greek army against Persia and used many bold tactics in battle. Alexander the Great significantly expanded the Greek legacy by conquering territories. When he conquered a territory, he would not force the locals to assimilate into the Greek culture. This is to ensure they would not rebel against his leadership. He was always courageous and persistent in battle, which made many individuals admire him. Similarly, Julius Caesar was a leader of Ancient Rome. In the beginning of Caesar’s reign, he
They believed by training their young at such a young age that they would be the strongest military force there was. (Document H) School was very different for the children of Athens, they did not only educate them in military but in the arts. At the age of 18, Athenians began military training while the Spartans started exceptionally sooner. By doing so, Athenians were prepared for both
The Influential Roman Empire As historians look back on the mighty Greek and Roman Empires, they can reflect on the great organization of these civilizations. The precise organization of these empires has contributed greatly to the development of many nations, mainly modern day America. Although Greece contributed many beneficial ideas and techniques to modern day America, Rome was more influential through trade networks, its democratic government, and its noticeable cultural achievements. America’s ways of trading are based on some techniques used by the Greeks, but are more notably influenced by the Romans. To begin, Greece was forced to trade because of their lack of resources.
Their military was made of citizens of Rome. They had citizens of Rome that fought for the military. We have people that sign up for the military. They aren’t forced but we still have our own citizens fighting for our country. Auxiliary units were under direct command of the legion legate of the legion the were attached with.
As Athens was invested in learning new materials, the Spartans were gaining knowledge in war and gaining experience in combat. Although different methods in many ways they were both taught something in education and at least a small amount of military training. “...boys were taught survival skills, how to fight, how to steal what they need without getting caught…” Doc A. Even to this day, we still use Athens and Sparta’s societal systems and structures because they were so revolutionary. Athens even introduced the idea of democracy, and Sparta had a strong military culture. Although Athens and Sparta were close together, Athens focused on leadership and education while Sparta focused on the military and war. However, due to their different governments and cultures, each has their strengths and weaknesses. However, because Athens focuses on its future leaders, Athens is the better model for a society.
A strong military was a top priority in Sparta. At the age of seven the boys in Sparta were taken away to military training. At the age of thirty you would join the professional army and you could marry. Sparta had one of the best, and strongest armies in ancient
Ancient Sparta has often been referred to as one of the most dominant military forces in history. During Sparta’s time of dominance, Spartan forces employed tactics of intimidation and sovereignty. Spartan soldiers dedicated their lives to training and preparing for battle, enabling them to create a fierce, dominant military. Sparta used their military for both protection and conquering, maintaining a stable economy and civilization. The Spartan military was able to dominate for so long because of superior military tactics, extensive training and discipline and advanced weaponry and armor, and intimidation and help from the gods.
And, the minority of people throughout the empire who were Roman citizens were intensely proud of this privilege. Strong political ideals and interests created some similarities between Greco- Roman society and the Confucian values of classical China, although the concept of active citizenship was distinctive in the Mediterranean cultures. However, Greece and Rome did not develop a single or cohesive set of political institutions to rival China's divinely sanctioned emperor or its elaborate bureaucracy. So in addition to political intensity and localism as characteristics of Mediterranean civilization, we must note great diversity in political forms.
Greece and Rome, two ancient societies, both influenced many aspects of modern life. Their advancements were utilized in many later cultures. They influenced almost every part of today’s world, such as government, language, and architecture, as well as making scientific advancements. Also, the successes of these two civilizations lead to many countries modeling most of their public facilities and systems after the ones found in Greece and Rome. Ancient culture strongly influenced modern culture by means of language.
The Greeks and Romans seem to be extremely influential on our modern civilization. Many Greek and Roman traditions and cultures play major roles in our civilization. These traditions and cultures are displayed throughout our government, education, art, architect, cultural activities, and many other things. I assert the most influential ideas the Greeks and Romans had are displayed in our government, art, and architecture. Their ideas have inspired over 25 centuries, growing and changing over time, and still remain in our modern civilization.
Ancient Civilizations of the ancient world have explained a lot of things in our present days, but what makes it so great is that it’s architecture. The ancient Greek and Ancient Roman are very rich and variable history and culture, but also they had similarities and differences The Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman civilizations had some differences although they are very close to each other. First, they had different social systems; the ancient Greek divided their social systems into five categories: slaves, freedmen, metics, citizens and women , and in the ancient Greek women were not given a position they were like to be less than slaves, but in the ancient Roman civilization they dived into four categories: freedmen, slaves, plebians and patricians, and women were considered citizen if they were not born into slavery, however they were not able to hold any position or vote. Second, The ancient Greek created and developed the three famous classical orders which is Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, On the other hand Ancient Roman took the classical order with making minor differences and created the arch and used it in their buildings.
The Roman army was experienced and strong because of the initial training of soldiers. Recruits weren't immediately put into battle because the empire didn't want to waste their time watching recruits get hurt or harm others in battle, so a four-month training period was created to weed out the weak soldiers. This four-month initial training period consisted of fighting, digging tunnels, and building defenses, three skill key to winning battles (Patricia, 246). Recruits trained with weapons made of wood that were twice as heavy as the weapons the men would use in battle, so the men could become stronger and be able to easily fight with the normal weapons. The recruits were given ranks to determine what groups the recruits would be placed in which pushed the recruits to do better (Patricia, 246).
The system of government was based on philosophy rather than belief of something higher like gods. The Greeks believed in the ability of men to think rationally and govern based on reason. Greece believed more in what they could see. The Greeks government was run through the citizens, it was voted on who would rule; it was not like India where the rulers were based on patriarchy. Some might argue that Ancient India and Greece were more similar rather than different, however Greece and India were more different than they were similar.
Sparta was the land power of its time and its hoplite’s (Soldiers) were drilled and trained to perfection. The Athenian’s had the overall maritime power at the time and supported by a walled capital. The Spartan leader warned his king’s men about the overall strength and power of the Athenian’s. However, the loyalty to the Spartan King and his orders the Spartans marched through Attica ravishing and destroying the Athenian estates and farms.
Ancient Greek and ancient Rome are often confused with one another even though there are great differences between the two. Both countries are Mediterranean but have social class differences, different mythology, different life values and different architectural concepts. It is said that much of what Rome used in everyday life was taken from the ancient Greek civilization as the ancient Greek civilization started 5th century BC. And it was not till hundreds of years later that the roman civilization started. Cities in Ancient Greece were differentiated by hills.
