After Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States, the South became very concerned that the end of life as they knew it was near, (Shultz, n.d.). President Lincoln was opposed to slavery and he was against the spread of it in the West. The southerners assumed that if the all the western territories remained free, the Republicans would accomplish their abolition efforts. Secession began with the states in the deep south, (Shultz, n.d.). South Carolina was the first southern state to secede from the Union and several others began to follow. The states wanted to maintain their right to own slaves and they did not want to continue to live where that was not possible. These states were dependent upon slavery in order for their cotton production to be a success. The southern states that had left the Union established the Confederate States of America on February 7,1861 and they elected Jefferson Davis as their first President. There were many attempts by Lincoln to avoid a war and to reconcile with the Confederacy, however, none of them proved …show more content…
He wanted to assure the southern states that if they would remain in the Union he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the states where it was already allowed. He did however, maintain that no state should be able to withdrawal from the Union and that the arsenals, forts, and other federal property that happen to stand in these southern states were still the Union’s property. I suppose you could say he used a bit of reverse psychology. I believe he knew that the Confederate States would become aggressive and want to fight for their beliefs and I believe he knew that the Union States would be successful if there was to be a war. He left it all up to the Confederacy and left no blame for himself. For all intents and purposes, he was trying to unite the Confederacy and the Union
He focused making sure the United States would remain a democratic country. He expressed his goal of keeping an organized Union and his belief that he did not want to abolish slavery, just keep it from expanding. 2. What was the northern strategy at the beginning of
He wanted 75,000 volunteers for the army. He didn’t agree that you can secede from the United States, because it didn’t say you could in the constitution that you could secede. The south’s argument was that if they join
Secession Essay The Southerners felt they had to secede from the Union for many reasons. They wanted to make their own Confederate government so they could do what they wanted. Like for instance, have control of slavery in their territories. The state South Carolina was the first to secede, on December 20, 1860, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee.
He simply wanted the union to stay as it always had been and for territories to decide if they were to be free states or slave states. This sentiment did work for roughly eighty years at this point, why change it? Well, the evolution of the United States had split the country into a fragmented union with the issue of slavery seeping through the cracks. It was only a matter of time until succession or civil war broke out, and everyone knew it. For example, Succession was threatened by South Carolina since the 1830s over issues with tariffs.
Even Thomas Jefferson predicted that slavery would be the “rock upon which the old Union would split”. The one thing that Stephen didn’t seem to put much thought into was whether his speech would benefit the Confederacy or not. The South was leaning towards a complete independence from the North, while the North was trying to devise a compromise to keep the secession from completely taking over the South. The North had a more modernized way of life, while the South had created a more barbaric slave based system. If the North had let the south leave and create its own government the United States of America would have probably ceased to exist.
1. When President Lincoln was elected there were only two significant forts in the South that flew the Union flag. Explain in paragraph form Lincoln’s middle-of-the road solution to bring needed supplies to Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. When President Lincoln was elected, only two significant forts in the South still flew the Union flag. Fort Sumter, in the harbor of Charleston (South Carolina), needed supples in order to support its men.
The South was afraid that if Abraham Lincoln was elected president that he would abolish slavery. That is not necessarily true because Abraham Lincoln had his own slaves but he just wanted to stop the spread of slavery. He did not want slavery to expand into the North or even to the new territories of the West. The South thought that Lincoln would abolish slavery and the South did not want to do that because they thought that the North would have too much power and they did not want to relinquish all of that power to the North. The slaves in the South were making their slaves owners a lot of money by working hard and not being paid for it.
He advised abolitionist Northerners to abandon anti-slavery measures, while simultaneously warning Southerners that disunion would inevitably lead to war. - In fact, he communicates his concern on how the union should be and how it’s the nation’s job to unite, and enforce freedom, etc.… but he is clearly camouflaging his true feelings about slavery. He is simply making slavery a light issue: “But we must view things as they are.
I believe it will be greatly for the interests of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this, as regards Virginia especially, that I would cheerfully, have lost all I have lost by the war, and have suffered all I have suffered, to have this object attained”. As you can see by the quote that he was happy that slavery was abolished and he felt like the south needed it. He was a brave man and no one should have judged him or put him down for choosing his
In the months following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, seven southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. This was done primarily as a response to Lincoln’s election, as Lincoln did not support the institution of slavery, a crucial aspect of Southern society. Secession from the United States meant that these states would form a separate country from the United States with its own government and military. Some have speculated that secession was failure in democracy, that democracy should have prevented such a large part of the United States to be so unhappy with its government that it would form a new country. However, it was the American system of democracy that laid
The issues that eventually led to the secession of the southern states had been brewing for a considerable amount of time. Most people want to say that the reason for the war was slavery, while yes that was an issue it don’t start the war and wasn’t brought up into a little ways in to the war. One of the biggest issues that truly led to the states seceding was the debate over States’ rights. There had been a debate for years on if the federal government had the right to pass laws reversed laws already in place at state level, going far back as 1798.
During the Mid 1800’s marked a crucial period for our country. It will have a big effect on the development of our country. Throughout this time, our country was split, split into two sections, the North and the South. The Civil war was a war fought against the North and the South, the Union and the Confederates, from 1861-1865.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
After the efforts to gain independence from Britain and the creation of the United States of America, eighty years later this union was not so united. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, it was the first time that Americans fought Americans. Among many reasons, the Civil War is known to be a result of the arguments over the delineation of the States’ Rights or the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. In actuality, the Civil War, the most deadly war in American history, was due to disputes over slavery in the American territories.
