Mesopotamia was home of the Fertile Crescent. The first civilization to develop was ancient Sumer. Their empire lasted from around 3000 to 2331 B.C.E. They created many towns in the southernmost part of Mesopotamia. The ancient Sumerians developed many new technologies. These included a new writing style called cuneiform and mathematics like geometry and trigonometry. They also made advances in medicine.
Sumer was conquered by Hummurabi, king of the Amorites. He established a capital at Babylon. The Babylonians ruled from 2331 to around 1595 B.C.E. While in power, he created a code of law that governed the land.
Egypt developed around 3100 to 1200 B.C.E. They thought a king was given his right to rule by the gods and called them pharaohs.

The northern part broke away and established Israel. The bottom half became Judah. The Assyrians wiped out Israel, but Judah survived a little longer. They were crushed by the Babylonians in 587 B.C.E. The people that survived were sent into exile. During this time, they refined their beliefs into the laws of Yahweh and became known as the Jews.
The Assyrians were in power from 859 until 612 B.C.E. They were very militaristic. The Assyrian military was advanced in siege machinery and techniques. They knew how to use their victories and annexed or conquered other states to create an empire.
Even with all their military power, the Assyrian empire fell nearly overnight. Babylon won its independence in 626 B.C.E. and joined the Medes to destroy the Assyrians. By 612, a mere fourteen years after Babylon gained independence, the empire fell.

Hammurabi also known as Khammurabi and Ammurapi, assumed the throne of his father, Sin-Muballit, becoming the sixth king of the Amorite First Dyansty of Babylon, and reigned from 1792 to 1750 BCE. After taking the throne from his father, Hammurabi expanded his kingdom outwards, and continued to concquer all of ancient Mesopotamia, as the Babylonian Empire held minor cities before this time, such as Kish, Sippar and Borsippa. However, Hammurabi moved forward after coming into power, and pressed into the boarders of neighbouring empire through Militia means, and careful alliances that allowed him to reign over, and control all of anicent Mesopotamia before 1750 BCE.

The city of Babylon was the capital of Babylonia in southern Mesopotamia. Babylon was a weak city which seeked independence from its neighbor, Assyria. The second Major Empire during this time is known as the Persian Empire. Persians were part of a nomadic group that came to Iranian plateau at the end of the second millennium BCE. Cyrus the Great united Persian tribes and defeated the Medes and other people in Anatolia. Persian’s borrowed ideology and institutions from the Elamites the Babylonians, and the Assyrians. Cyrus founded the Persian Empire.
When the Babylonian empire fell, another took its place-Assyria. Ashurbanipal was the fearless ruler of Assyria. Assyria was located in Northern Mesopotamia, an area of rolling hills. To protect their lands, and all of the people in it, they built a very powerful army who attacked their enemies with battering rams, and iron tipped weapons. It was about time; after all, the city wasn’t reaching its full potential it had. After the sorrow death of King Sun-Muballit, a new leader would come in and take his place and perhaps follow his footsteps. “This leader was the oldest son of Sun-Muballit and would be the sixth king that has taken power over the small city-state, Babylon.”
