More than 200 years ago, slavery was taking over the United States. The popular belief was that slavery only affected slaves negatively. What people didn’t realize was that slavery also negatively affected slaveholders. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Frederick Douglass shows how slavery affects both slaves and slaveholders negatively by using memories, 1st person narration, and description. First, Frederick Douglass uses the recounting of memories to show how slavery affects slaves and their owners. In Chapter 1 of his novel, Douglass recalls his Aunt Hester’s whipping. He remembers how “No words, no tears, no prayers, from his gory victim, seemed to move his iron heart from its bloody purpose” (Douglass Ch 1). His master cruelly whips her, with what seems to Douglass, as no heart. However, earlier on in the text, Douglass mentions how his master “ was a cruel man, hardened by a long life of slaveholding”(Douglass Ch 1). Slaveholding causes his master to be a cruel man; the phrase “hardened by a long life of slaveholding” (Douglass Ch. 1) proves this. Captain Anthony, Douglass’s master, had a long life of slaveholding, which made his heart turn to iron, so that when whipping his slaves, he feels little remorse for his actions. Hicks “murdered my wife's cousin... mangling her person in the most horrible manner, breaking her nose and breastbone with a stick, so that the poor girl expired in a few hours afterward” ( Douglass Ch 4). He later says how Mrs. Hicks had a warrant for her arrest, but officials didn’t arrest her. The poor slave didn’t get justice for her horrible death, and the person who murdered her could do it again and again without punishment. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave written by Frederick Douglass, the author asserts that slaves were treated no better than livestock. Douglass supports his claim by giving examples of the hardships he endured while living as a slave. Douglass’s purpose is to connect with the reader on multiple levels in order to abolish slavery. Based on the text, Douglass is writing to people with the power to achieve his goal of abolishing slavery. Douglass, a former slave, experienced the mistreatment of slaves to the worst degree.
From the beginning, Douglass’ life was a struggle; especially since his first master, Captain Anthony, and overseer, Mr. Plummer, were both merciless beings. The title “Captain” was thought to have come from Anthony’s time sailing the Chesapeake Bay. Described as “a cruel man, hardened by a long life of slaveholding”, Captain Anthony would often take sadistic pleasure in torturing Douglass’s Aunt by tying her up and whipping her until she bled. Mr. Plummer also took part in these heinous acts. He was “a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster.”
While describing his escape and life after, Douglass uses strong words to depict the horrors of slavery to support his later feelings. One example of this specific diction is when he uses the words “wretchedness” (1) and “tortures” (22) to directly describe the enslavement. By using these words, Douglass not only establishes his hatred of slavery, but it helps to explain why at first he felt excited to be free and also why his feelings develop into fear eventually. After living in cruel conditions for so long, Douglass could not help but look forward to what was ahead of him, until he realized he had to always protect himself from going back to what he left. Additionally, Douglass includes many words to suggest the difficulties a fugitive slave might encounter.
Slavery possesses a cruelty where very few of the victims attain liberation, with a smaller number able to recollect on their experiences. Nearly 172 years passed since Douglass published his journey from utter blindness to become “his own master”, and the message relayed still resonates in the present. Douglass vividly describes hardships that slaves and free African-Americans must deal with. As I pondered on the imagery presented by the wonderfully scripted narrative, I immediately saw, on a drastically smaller scale, the issues Douglass presents to the reader, in modern day 2017. It appears that, as racial divides flare, the black man is subjected to punishment rather than the white.
“...Living but a short distance from where I used to live, murdered my wife’s cousin, a young girl between fifteen and sixteen years of age, mangling her person in the most horrible manner, breaking her nose and breastbone with a stick, so that the poor girl expired in a few hours afterwards. ”(34) Douglass’s use of anecdotes throughout the novel, strengthen his argument of the inhuman acts slavery commits. Because slaves only had the rights their masters condoned, any punishment a master decided on was permitted. As humans everyone makes mistakes, but because slaves are dehumanized, mistakes are practically a death sentence.
This is how Douglass and other slaves destroyed the American slave system. First, along the long road to freedom Douglass and other slaves experienced a lot of physical harm done to them. The text states, “She was a field hand, and a whipping is the penalty of not being in the field at sunrise.” This means that the owners thought it was ok to beat their slaves when they are doing most to all their work. Also, the book says, “I was not so terrified and horror-stricken at the sight, that I had myself in a closet.”
When Douglass was first sent to live in Master Hugh’s family as a slave, he learned that his mistress treated him like a “human being ought to treat another” (37). The reason why Douglass learned how to read was because his mistress taught him the alphabet since she was described by Douglass as a “tender hearted woman” (37) who took cared of people that were in need since she had more than enough provisions. However, his personal opinion on his mistress changed as soon as she became crueler and violent than her husband. The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Frederick Douglass’s narrative provides a first hand experience into the imbalance of power between a slave and a slaveholder and the negative effects it has on them both. Douglass proves that slavery destroys not only the slave, but the slaveholder as well by saying that this “poison of irresponsible power” has a dehumanizing effect on the slaveholder’s morals and beliefs (Douglass 40). This intense amount of power breaks the kindest heart and changes the slaveholder into a heartless demon (Douglass 40). Yet these are not the only ways that Douglass proves what ill effect slavery has on the slaveholder. Douglass also uses deep characterization, emotional appeal, and religion to present the negative effects of slavery.
Douglass points to the vast unwillingness from the group of whites that refuses to fully perceive and accept African-Americans as deserving and equal citizens of the nation. Based on his personal experiences as a slave, Douglass is abundantly aware that the battle to abolish slavery is not an easy task. For the first twenty years of his life, he witnessed firsthand the abject cruelty of that institution in our country. Tactfully, Douglass seizes this opportunity to publicly highlight the unmerited and coarse differences in the treatment between the whites as opposed to the blacks living in the United States during this time period. He makes a “powerful testaments to the hypocrisy, bigotry and inhumanity of slavery” (Bunch 1).
Douglass stated, “What am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow-men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their masters?” He successfully expresses his pain and anger in this quote by providing images of his and his people’s suffering. He tapped into the emotions of his audience, such as mothers, workers, and those who have felt physically pain by exposing them to the amplified struggles he and others had to face. Nonetheless, he continually reminded the audience, both explicitly and subliminally, that his group of people are too human, and that the only difference they share is the color of their skin.
