Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals. Leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, and Marc Antony. Although these leaders have ruled at different times in history and different …show more content…
"Hitler's Propaganda Machine."). Hitler's book “Mein Kampf” contained “a clear statement of Hitler’s goals”(Ronald M. Smelser) but also served as propaganda for his party and regime. Propaganda was an important tool for the Nazis to have because “they cleverly manipulated the fears and weaknesses of each group” which helped them consolidate even more power. By preying on the peoples fear through propaganda they turned to Hitler and the Nazi party to protect them. Nazi propaganda also made the state look stronger and moral while in actuality Hitler and the Nazis were not moral. Furthermore past leaders have used rhetoric in their quest for power. Rhetoric is defined as “The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing”(Oxford dictionary). Orators and compelling leaders use rhetoric to influence their audience. Marc Antony in “The tragedy of Julius Caesar” uses rhetoric beautifully to sway the Romans from Brutus’s side to his. “You all did see that on the Lupercal. I thrice presented him a kingly crown,Which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition? Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, And, sure, he is an honorable man”(Act III, Scene ii). As illustrated above Marc Antony was an …show more content…
There has been historical precedent for this, for instance, Calvin Coolidge was a moral and dignified president. Calvin Coolidge’s presidency was during the roaring twenties a time of “dynamic social and cultural change, materialism and excess”, of isolationist policies and peacetime. Although the previous “Harding administration corruption scandals”(Coolidge, Calvin, 2001) made the American people lose faith in the government, Coolidge’s sense of morality “provided a model of stability and respectability for the American people”. However, Coolidge’s reputation as “Silent Cal” was not always helpful. President Coolidge's “laissez-faire policies also contributed to the economic problems that erupted into the Great Depression”. Despite the fact that he was a moral and honorable president his policies of noninterference in big business hurt more than they helped. Ultimately having good morals does not determine if you will be a good leader or
Most people agree that a president should be a good leader, with strong beliefs, with the will to stay strong in what you think, and to do what you say you will, Grover Cleveland unlike some presidents did these things. Furthermore Grover Cleveland met most of these standards which is way he was a good president. Grover Cleveland was a democrat who, was president in 1885-1889, and 1893-1897. We can learn from the fact that he was elected twice he was a good president. A closer look at how Grover Cleveland was a good president was how he fulfilled the seven presidential roles.
Emperor Augustus was the first Roman emperor (Augustus, n.d.). He gained this title after the assassination of his great-uncle Julius Caesar, and a series of events political and military that followed. He was the Roman ruler that transformed Rome from a republic to an empire. Originally born Gaius Julius Octavius, he was bestowed the name Augustus by the Roman Senate when they entitled him as the supreme ruler of Rome.
This clearly showed throughout his presidency. There was one instance where he addressed the country's arguing by saying, "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem", this was a very out-of-the-box thing to say, but he was right. Another thing he stood for was putting prayer into the nation's schools. His goal was to restore simple freedom to the citizens by giving them the opportunity to express their individual beliefs. This is one reason I look up to him, he stood for God and that is why he was
He the native people of north america off their land. He didn 't listen to the country 's opinion. He got rid of the bank which could have helped the country flourish and thrive. Why should he be remembered as a great president if all he did was set a precedent for future presidents to focus on the people instead of the country. Although yes he went through
He went on to shut down a corrupt bank, be the first and last president to rid the U.S. of all debt, and make many other accomplishments. However, there were some poor choices along the way. The Trail of Tears being an example of this; the mass killing of multiple Indians. Every president has made mistakes. This being on of the worst.
To be a good leader, one of the needed characteristics is to be a great communicator for the people. After and even during his two terms of the president, they gave Ronald Reagan the nickname, “The Great Communicator.” Reagan not only gave some of the most quotable speeches of any president, but he also pulled countries and the entire world closer together. A short sentence that best describes his actions would be, “(Reagan) had a way with people – especially in the political arena he had a great ability to pull people together, bring them to the side of peace and freedom and inspire them to encourage others to do the same. Reagan’s contagious enthusiasm and optimism for democracy was spreading, and he was recruiting allies in the cause of freedom everywhere he traveled or spoke” (Other Important Presidential
Just because someone is a leader doesn’t always mean they have good intentions. Napoleon seemed at first to be a good leader and to make change that was promised by Major. However, as soon as he made the seven commandments and then broke them displayed what type of leader he is. He made it clear Sunday meetings would always be a priority, but later he says that they were “unnecessary” and “a waste of time”. He also enforces too much work but yet does no work himself and involves the animals to engage in trade with neighboring farms.
A lot of these presidents’ policies and actions greatly benefitted the American people as well as the development of society on a global scale. And while some of these outcomes were controversial, the United States would not be where it is today without
Many things make a strong leader, their ability to calm the people, stabilize crises, and set good examples of citizenship. Overall a strong leader is “strong” if her or she can continuously hold onto power, and in order to do this, leaders must be liked by the people they govern. As history will show, leaders that are not liked by the people usually are not able to hold on to power for long, such as that in the case of King George III and the 13 British crown colonies in America. In theory, leaders that stay in power the longest are loved by the people because of their bravery and wisdom. These qualities-bravery and wisdom, wether he or she uses it to defend the country against it invaders or in creating laws for the well being and functionality of state, must be possessed by leaders in order to ensure the people’s safety and well being.
No matter how good he was before this, one event caused a big bump in his presidency. The Iran-Contra scandal shocked and upset many Americans. This was his biggest issue with morality. It brought down his support, and I am giving him and A- because of that. It Vision and Agenda Setting : A

Obama had displayed hypocrisy during his presidency, when he had sent bombs overseas and after, when he insulted the nation’s wealthiest people, only to become one. Another example was that of Hillary Clinton offering to send troops to places she previously did not mention and using charity funds to fuel her campaign. In addition to her, Donald Trump had made an election promise to build a wall but has never gotten a plan to do so. Also, he launched missiles overseas, even when he had previously said he would boycott that method. These are just a few of the reasons former President Barack Obama, Former First Lady Hillary Clinton, and Current President Donald Trump are all prime examples of this generations political leaders and their stances on hypocrisy.
An example of these people would be Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin became the absolute ruler of the USSR. He was given full power over his people. He later caused millions to die because he became corrupt and used his power for his benefit and not the people. Leaders abusing their
Politicians serve as leaders of our country, and when one thinks of a leader, words like honesty, communication, and consistency should come to mind. But many politicians today seem to demonstrate the exact opposite of these qualities. The word politician, has seemingly taken on a negative connotation, and this is because of the way many politicians win their elections. Gone are the days where politicians received nicknames such as Honest Abe or The Man of People. For example, you will not hear most people going around saying Honest Nixon or Honest Clinton when talking about today’s politics.
These published works about the ideal political leader, have been prominent in many modern leaders who try to model themselves after what they read, and agree, on what the ideal political leader is. Such pieces of literature are: Plato’s The Republic, Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations and Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince. Each leader has many great
