United Parcel Company (UPS) which is a logistics company takes many uses of big data. UPS have been tracking package movement and transaction information since 1980s. Currently the company tracks over 16.3 million packages of 8.8 million customers per day. Company takes up about 16 petabytes of data. Big data gets gathered from sources such as UPS transportation trucks that include truck speed, direction, braking, drive train performance, fuel levels etc. UPS consist of the world’s largest operations research project known as the ORION (On-Road Integration Optimization and Navigation) which mainly relies on online map data which helps to reconfigure a driver’s package pick up and drops in real-time. Thanks to big data analytics, the company was able to save more than 8.4 million gallons of fuel by cutting off 85 million miles off the daily routes in 2011. UPS estimated that if one mile was saved per driver, the company would save $30million per day thus the company can make significant saving for a year. The company also attempts to use the big …show more content…
In 2010 an earth quake hit Haiti which was the reason for the Cholera outbreak. The Colombia University and Karolinska Institute joined hands and analyzed call data from mobile phones to the Digicel Haiti network. These analytics showed the movement of population during the cholera outbreak. This information was useful to agencies such as United Nations to locate resources and identify threatened areas. Similarly non-government agencies, hospitals think that big data analytics can contribute to contain the Ebola virus in Africa. Mobiles phones are commonly used even in the poorest countries in Africa. Analyzing the data from Senegal’s Orange telecom can help to draw detailed maps of population movements in a given region. With these analytics, the proper organizations fighting can place treatment centers, check posts. (Nadig,
They will handle the pick up and delivery of our product and ensure that the product will be delivered without any issues. This will allow us to keep customers satisfied with their purchase and be aware of package delivery
This comparison puts cell phone use as a whole into a larger picture for readers to grasp the scale of these

Conditions for the small country worsened as a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, and over 300,000 people were killed, and 1.5 million were displaced, leaving them homeless. Just months after the earthquake hit, Haiti experienced the worst cholera outbreak in recent history, killing thousands, and infecting more than 6% of the population (Cook). Despite efforts from humanitarians and charities around the world, things never seemed to get better as access to clean drinking water and safe shelter became scarce. As the environment became virtually uninhabitable, many Haitians came to the United States, seeking asylum, and an opportunity to better the lives for themselves and their
After the Haiti earthquake of 2010 many lives were destroyed. The people were suffering from loss of loved ones as well as loss of property and possessions. “More than 220,000 were killed in the January 12, magnitude-7 quake, and an estimated 2 million people are living in temporary shelter in Port-au-Prince…The earthquake caused an estimated $7 billion in damage.” Haitians were suffering and in need of assistance.
The effects of the earthquake in Haiti in 2005 has proven to be devastating and negatively impacted the country. Natural disasters can lead to environmental problems such as shortage of food, shelter, and other resources essential for survival. It has caused destruction on people’s homes, lands, and buildings. Due to low income, people’s homes were not properly built to avoid damage to their building, therefore this lead to people living on the streets. There is an estimated amount of 380,000 children homeless and uneducated prior to the earthquake and an additional thousand that is untold of.
We must filter and customize that downloaded data for the health conditions that we primarily try to improve. Once data is customized and filtered properly, it gives us “care gaps”. Those care gaps can be easily closed out by accessing patient’s EMR or by referral. This updated data then gets uploaded back to the healthcare insurance company data set for reporting purpose. Data analytics helps health profession close the care gaps and improv care coordination between

Understanding How the Haitian Earthquake of 2010 Affected the Number Orphans and How We Can Help Have you thought about a natural disaster that happened years ago, leaving no effect on you at all? Why would you have a reason to? The effects of an earthquake that happened five years ago have probably been solved by now. Right? But unfortunately, the people of Haiti are still struggling and dying because of the earthquake that occurred five years ago.
The association of poverty with Africa goes together like apple pie and America. From the advertisements of malnourished, African children to our education, or rather lack of education, about African countries in the American school system, the concept of Africa as an impoverished continent has been engrained into our minds. This rhetoric of Africa has lasted over decades, with a substantial amount of aid being given to African countries to rectify this problem. And yet, sixteen of the world’s poorest countries were identified as being in sub-Saharan Africa as of 2013. This insinuates that foreign countries and organizations that provide aid, need to reevaluate why aid isn’t making a bigger impact at fixing the problem.
Even though organizations hold huge amount of data, they cannot use them effectively as they are unstructured. However new technologies are now available which enable analysis of large, complex, unstructured data. The accessibility of technology has become easy; as a result, there is massive increase in data amounts available with the entrepreneurs. The data usage depends on the ability the way it is stored, managed and then analyzing it adequately. Big data is an upcoming and emerging trend in the field of Information technology.
As big data things continue to grow in this modern era, today we can learn how to predict or assume anything that will happen in the future with data from the past. This studies known as Predictive Analytics. Predictive analytics combine methods from machine learning, data mining and statistics to find meaning or pattern from a huge volume of data. Tom H Davenport, a senior advisor at Deloitte Analytics has broken down three primer models on doing predictive analytics: the data, statistics, and assumptions.
Tracking consumers’ habits in many different aspects of their life has allowed them to gear specific products in a specific manner. The Big Data I speak of is basically new. It is the data being created by all the electronic medical records the medical industry has begun to utilize over the past few years. With the mandate from Congress every hospital in the country had to install software to utilize as electronic health
Chapter 1. Introduction The transportation, e-commerce and business services are very competitive and sensitive to price and quality of service. FedEx not only faces competitors from international companies that perhaps subsidized by foreign government, but also competes with regional companies that operate smaller but each has competitive advantage which would in turn reduce FedEx’s revenues and market share. For example, according to reuters.com.
